For some strange reason, of all of Mr. Michael’s stories, this is the scariest. I can just see the College kid thinking he just made some money and then trying to come back and say, “you know I don’t think I can do this” and seeing the snake eyes in one of these mafia guys and realizing it wasn’t a gift it was a guarantee.

Hello Michael, I grew up in North Jersey with some of the children whose fathers were Captains and made guys of the Lucchese Family. In the late 90s and early 2000s I wanted nothing but to be a part of the life. I did some bad shit I’m not proud of because before the soldiers moved up they saw I was comfortable with hurting people. Enough said there, after a couple years I realized after a pinch and house arrest for some no show jobs and racketeering I wasn’t going to get anywhere. You’re absolutely right about going no where fast and only seeing a life of treachery whose family would be devastated just like everyone else. Hearing you speak confirms what I know and the better decisions I’ve made. Thank you, Sir

Michael--I've known several bookmakers in my time, and this was a great inside look at the business. I'd like to point out that there's another good reason that bookmakers need to be working with the Mafia: managing risk! Sometimes, for various reasons, most of money is bet on a particular side, so if that side wins, the bookmaker is going to owe a lot of money to those bettors. For example, if you're a bookmaker in New Orleans and the Saints are in the Superbowl, it's not unusual for most of the bets to be placed on the Saints. When this happens, the bookmaker will want to "lay off" a large percentage of those bets with The Family operation in New Orleans. This is one of the important ways that bookmakers mitigate risk. On a different, but related topic, I believe your audience would enjoy hearing your review of the 1974 film "The Gambler." Although not exactly a Mob movie, it's close enough and is probably the best film ever made on the subject of gambling, from psychological and business perspectives. It features powerful and memorable acting performances by Jimmy Cahn, Paul Sorvino, Jacqueline Brooks, and Burt Young, plus James Woods in one of his earliest movie roles. "
