@@bruttosporcoecattivo ...yes and hit man Joe Sullivan and Micky Spillane
@patrickconnors46024 жыл бұрын
@jeff I think you will find that Castellano was very fortunate he never got killed by them at the meeting he invited Mickey Featherstone and Jimmy Coonan to. They were supposed to ring back at a certain time to let the westies know they were ok and if they didn't they were ordered to slaughter everyone in sight with machine guns and grenades. They were crazy enough to do it too. The only saving grace was one of them forced the others to wait a few more minutes and the phone call came. The westies wernt spared anything. They were absolute psychopathic maniacs and The Gambinos knew it was better to have them on their side as opposed to a war where countless guys would have died and no money would be made from the Jacobs Javitts Centre, and the longshore men on the UWS. Hells Kitchen always had an Irish mob that was never under threat, from the 5 points gangs to Owney Madden (who worked hand in hand with Luciano and Costello, and put up Italians Jews and Irish gangsters in Arizona without fear of the law or feuds), to Mulligan who's protégés were Jimmy Burke and Mickey Spillane and then the Coonan era. even when Castellano told Salerno he was using the westies as an enforcement arm for the Gambinos. Coonan only agreed if Salerno continued his war with Spillane. Who did Salerno use to hit Spillanes mob? An Irish guy called Joseph Mad Dog Sullivan who was supposedly the most feared hitman in NYC, who Salerno hired from an Associate who worked for the Genoveses called John Sullivan (no relation). He even used Joe Sullivan to take out some of Italians such asTony Bananas the consiglierie of the Philly Mob for Salerno, and John Fiorino, a Teamsters Union official and reported mafia member among many others for Salerno. Sullivan is also a suspect in the killing of Spillane along with Roy DeMeo. To just brush the Irish Mob off a group that got pushed aside is not accurate. The Irish gangs ruled NYC for generations, and by the time the Italians were taking over is around the same time that the Irish were moving out of the Ghettos and moving up in the world. They took the top political and police jobs and did very well for themselves in that regard. Its generational, and it will happen to the Italians too. Its happening right now there are no more poor Italian parts of NYC. The Cosa Nostra will not have the recruitment they once had, as the Italian people are now blending into society and doing great for themselves too. There are no young Italian mobsters now that can make an impact like Luciano, Gambino, Genovese, Bonnano, Profaci, Mangano, Franzese etc. The best of this generation was Frank Cali and look what unfortunately happened there. One day, and it won't be that far away they will be looked at rubble in comparison to what was once a Palace. The Commission is reduced to a few families, and although it was what gave la cosa nostra its incredible longevity and unity, all over America these families are whittling away and some have been lost forever. Families in cities across America are becoming defunct, and the bigger families are full of informants. Massino was looked on as the last true Don in NYC and even he became a government witness. Enjoy it while it lasts, because its not going to get much better. The days of La Cosa Nostra as we think of it are all but numbered. The families are now pushing into more and more legitimate businesses. What may give us an extra few years is the FBI taking their eye off the ball and allow them to get back into the unions in a meaningful capacity, becoming silent partners in offshore gambling sites, drugs, and book making. After that, its someone else's turn to be #1. It won't be half as fascinating or interesting or even romantic but it will be someone else, be they Latin, Eastern Europeon or Asian.

Many of the Jewish gangsters you mention have Germanic last names - in 1794 Poland was partitioned between Prussia , Austria and Russia. These areas had large Jewish populations who after the Napoleonic period (1815) emancipated their Jewish populations particularly in Prussian and Austrian controlled parts of the former Polish state. Public schooling was mandatory with the Jewish families seeing these very good schools as a tremendous benefit. There was an acculturation that took place that mixed Prussian / Austrian concepts of order and education with the Jewish culture emphasizing intellect , business and hard work. When these families immigrated to the United States they brought these influences with them. It would be interesting to know where the ancestors of these men originated.

the historic language of ashkenaz jews (yiddish) is a germanic language because they settled in the rhine region sometime around the 600-800s. Many of them later migrated to Eastern europe to avoid persecution etc. they took the language with them and were a tightly knit ethnic group. Many ashkenazim took localized names so they might have polish/slavic sounding names as well. many also kept their yiddish/germanic names
