Fan From Buffalo NY here. This was awesome. I loved the full broadcast with the time period commercials and intermission. I was 14 when this game was played. I thought at that time- that either the Bowman led Sabres were going to emerge as a Dynasty or the young Islanders were. Islanders were a better team. A tough, talented, smartly coached team and one of the best ever. Great time capsule and Thank You for posting.

Before the playoffs started that year I picked Buffalo to win cup but I quickly became a Islanders fan ,as a matter of fact I wore number 22 after the playoffs ended when I played ball and hockey, I am Canadian

Thanks for posting this! As a Sabres fan. Islanders were obviously a nightmare. Tge exactly wrong type of team with excellent talent the Sabres could face. Believe it or not, I still don't think those Islanders teams get the respect they deserve.

I love the announcement that smoking is prohibited in the arena and must be confined to the lobbies and corridors. I have vivid memories of navigating those long, ramp-like corridors in The Aud to get up and down the various levels, and them being filled with smokers. What a great barn that was.

Man, you can't blame Edwards on this. Giveaways galore.

Great stuff as always. You posted a hard to find video of Tenor Joe Biron singing the National Anthems. If you have more with Anthems, and I'm sure you, keep them coming. And Canada is right next door to Buffalo, so it's been a long time tradition.

I like that the arenas had real names instead of having the name of a product or service. It’s a little less “dystopian future” where advertising is the only thing that matters anymore.

During this shutdown this channel has been a lifesaver. The Buffalo series is one of the 19 straight that I haven't seen every game of. Wow these Sabres announcers are real homers.
@jeffreyg46264 жыл бұрын
Actually they're "Hockey Night in Canada" announcers. The Sabres were a favorite draw that year because they had a great season (2nd overall) under 1st year coach Scotty Bowman.

My thought as I was watching this game way back then: My Isles have gotten to the Semi-finals so many times and lost. The most disappointing was just a year ago against the Strangers. But this year seems different. They are playing so well, so confidently. Could this be the year?!

This was the last hurrah for the team that I grew up watching in the 70s. Martin was traded and retired due to injuries shortly after this series. Gare, Schoenfeld, Sauve and Derek Smith were traded to the Red Wings in '81 and the team was never quite the same, IMO.
@dls.theoculusgroup10 ай бұрын
Completely agree. That Gare/Shony/Sauve/Derek Smith trade ripped the heart from the team. Never quite the same, even with the addition of Foligno.

Thanks for posting. 2 thoughts. I remember the 5 minute penalty and that the Isles scored a shorty. A turning point. Also on Tonelli's first goal Edwards was awful.

Good one, Pride! Tough series, Isles continued to work OT magic. I attended decisive game 6 at the Coli - loudest crowd I ever heard there when Isles hit ice for pre-game skate (even louder than game 6 of the finals).... QUESTION-- do you have in your archives any of the Islanders '80 home games against Buff or Boston? Game 6 versus Buff has been available for a while but nothing on the others.

I began watching hockey the year after as an 8year old. I love watching games from the first year. Just have been awesome to be in the old Barn.

Damn Mike Bossy only in his third year. His career was way too short.

A little late, but...drafting Mike Bossy instead of Ric Seiling would have helped the Sabres.

because most of the players are canadians.

@@graciemaemarie11jones16 The real reason is likely what John Mazurkewich aand Pete Hutchins say above. On the other hand, I sort of like your suggestion --- that would be great and logical if all sports did something like that but do you really think if the day ever comes in Baseball that most of the players are from the Dominican Republic, that you would hear the Dominican National Anthem played at MLB games in the United States or Canada? I sort of doubt it.

When the F was Buffalo in the Finals? Oh? Ok, before I was born in 1981 which I guess was all isles before the Oilers, but I liked the Flyers at about 6, the Lemieux came around….but the Sabres? Playoffs? We talkin about Playoffs?
