You can't blame Snepts there. Trottier came out of nowhere to slash Snepts stick. Give Trottier points for making it happen and Bossy for being the greatest goal scorer of all time. No way Ovechkin scores on that play.

SMH how so many people call it a "giveaway" is mind boggling. Trottier made it happen, with a slash and Bossy anticipated where the puck would go. Without the slash (and it was a slash), Snepts clears the puck. And, if you see the number of my profile picture, you know I am biased towards the greatest goal scorer in NHL history.

Game 1 could have very well gone either way. With a split going home, Vancouver would have been formidable. The Canucks respected the Islanders offense and therefore got a lot of chances and fought back from being fiends. The Oilers played the Islanders with total contempt thinking they could blow them away like the weak opposition in their conference. The result was a series where the Islanders outscored them by a nearly 3 to 1 margin.

Vancouver played extremely well and were 11-2 in the playoffs going into the finals. Despite all the hype, they were a much tougher opponent for the islanders than the oilers in 83. The massive egos of the oilers and their arrogance hurt them. They were going around bragging in 83 as if they had already won. The media went along with them.

For years, I was under the impression that Snepsts scored an own goal since that is how the sports section of my local newspaper reported it. No NHL on U.S. television in those days, and even the local newscast didn't show highlights, they just reported the score. A couple of decades later, I saw this clip (59:30) and realized he just gave up the puck on a bad pass, not an own goal.

I know it was a sweep, but I thought Vancouver played the Isles tougher than Edmonton a year later. In '83, Oilers lost by scores of 2-0, 6-3, 5-1, and 4-2- margin of 11. In '82, Vancouver lost by scores of 6-5, 6-4, 3-0, and 3-1- margin of 7.

I agree 100 percent. It’s ironic that Vancouver was a tougher opponent than Edmonton. And that horrible 2-3-2 format in 84 is inexplicable. Since Edmonton has the better regular season the least they could do was to start with the 2 in Edmonton. Sather obviously had some friends who were pulling for Edmonton.

No confrontational comments from me. Hard to believe it was that long ago. The 1982 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Hard to believe the Edmonton Oilers were knocked out of the First Round. Hard to believe the Vancouver Canucks were in the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in their franchise. Hard to believe the New York Islanders were the last team to enjoy a Stanley Cup winning dynasty. Seems like it was yesterday I saw the playoffs happen between an underdog team that was the unlikely favourite to go that far into the playoffs against a team favoured to win the Cup a third time. I enjoyed watching it on television. Richard Brodeur was sensational in goal for the Canucks. Mike Bossy was a superb goal scorer for the New York Islanders. Canucks were a hard working team, but the Islanders were the better team. I am a Canucks fan, but I can appreciate looking back at this series for the excitement it brought to my city. At least there was no riot that occurred in Vancouver after the grand prize was won by the Islanders.

I guess it comes down to opinion how one team matches up against another, but the thing about the 83 series was that it didn't seem as close because Billy Smith had one of the most unbelievable Series of all-time between the pipes, so the scores didn't reflect how hard the Islanders had to work just stave off Edmonton's non-stop rushes in each game. Vancouver did work their asses off in 82, though, that city should be proud of that 82 team.

Snepsts should have just made the safe play and rung it around the boards as that would have guaranteed a second OT period. There was nothing to be gained from attempting a break-out pass up the middle with so little time left on the clock anyway. Had the Canucks won this game in OT, the series may have turned out to be more interesting but the Islanders with Billy Smith and playoff MVP Mike Bossy were still the better team.

I disagree somewhat. Had the Canucks stolen Game 1, that's if King Richard stayed in his crease instead of trying to pounce on a loose puck, Vancouver would have been fully confident. The Canucks had the lead twice in Game 2 and based on the roll the team was on, they could have easily come home with 2-0 series lead. The Islanders were powerhouse dynasty and always found ways to overcome adversity but this could have been a very interesting final, if it weren't for blowing Game 1.

ziggy morris Like I said, the Islanders were a powerhouse team and still could have come back from a 2-0 deficit. However, the Canucks were on a confident roll and based on the way they were playing, they could've been up 2-0 in the series if it weren't for a couple of bad untimely plays by Richard Brodeur late in regulation and by Harold Snepsts in overtime.

znogypogy .... Hey, what happened, happened. I agree the Islanders were the best team. They were the team I hoped for; although they knocked off some of my other favourite teams to win their cups. I always rejoice when I think of their victories over the Oilers in 1981 and 1983! Nevertheless, I think the point trying to be made in this instance is that not enough credit was given to the Canucks, who indeed made the Islanders sweat a bit in games 1 and 2 of this series. And sure, even if the Canucks got a 2-0 series lead, the Islanders would have won.

I miss Hudson bay rules. That is the way a hockey game should be officiated. Today's NHL is officiated almost like a Soccer game, they say the reason for calling everything is to increase scoring. OH Really!!!! The 80s with all of its hooking, holding, interference had the highest scoring games. of ANY decade. Go to the score sheets of those games and see for yourself The main reason for less scoring is because more athletic goalies who cover the net more the MICHELIN MAN with their pads almost the size of couch pillows and trappers the size of a fishing net. A secondary reason is the bigger players covering more ice surface leading to less room to maneuver. Those who tell you hooking, holding, interference leads to less scoring is blowing smoke up your ass. When you closely watch the games you'll see the hooking, holding, interference creates more scoring opportunities then it prevents. Those do gooders who say hooking, holding, interference is not fair play should go watch a track and field meet instead.

Well I would disagree and say Bob Bourne could match him but that’s your opinion... Plus there’s always a way to counter speed no matter how fast a guy is. The dynasty era isles encountered matchups like that all the time, the way you beat a team with a speedster on it is you keep the puck in the opposing end and you bottle up the neutral zone. That’s how the Isles played it and teams did similar things to stop Bure. It’s not like Bure was impossible to defend against or anything.
