Everyone talked about the battle of Quebec/Alberta, but for my money the best playoff rivalry of all was the Rangers/Islanders subway series's.

To many, Jim Gordon will always be the radio voice of the NFL's New York Giants, not many realize that Gordon was just as good as the TV PBP Voice of the New York Rangers.

I was a Montreal fan, but yet, I grew up listening to Gordon's announcing because MSG would be on the USA Network and it got to my Central Wyoming city, though 82 was the last year I'd listen to it. It makes me feel like a junior high school kid doing homework on school nights to the soundtrack of Rangers hockey home games on a old Zenith black and white TV!

Butch Goring St. Boniface. Manitoba's great players. Goring,Clarke,Leach. The best. Real classy hockey players. All three filled rinks in junior hockey. Gifted three.

Probably already been said, but last 5 minutes of this one Smitty was just unconscious.

Thanks for posting this. If Isles don't survive Pittsburgh in round 1, the Rangers had a good chance to win the Cup. Johnnson hurt early and McEwen hurt late. Isles survive with 4 defensemen.

@@JW-fv9tg I don't think Persson played in that game, but, honestly, I've been watching a lot of Isles games from early 1980s (thanks Islanders Pride!!) so this game is no longer fresh in my mind.

Its funny listening to Gordon and Esposito constantly saying what great and unbelievable saves mio was making. When today those saves are considered easy and routine. Lol same with Smith. He was my favorite goalie growing up but he not in same league as these goalies today

Different time, different game, different style, different equipment (goalies didn't look like the Michelin Man back then). This why I always have said that arguing cross era sports is pointless. "Would Babe Ruth be able to dominate today?" Of course not the way he did in the 20's. "Would the 72 Dolphins go unbeaten today?". Of course not. The point I am making is these players and teams did what it took to be the best during their eras. To compare players from 30-40 years ago to players today is apple to bowling balls.

@@stevep8445 goalies today are better athletes and the style they all play is superior to goalies from back in the day. Yes of course the innovation in equipment has helped especially with goalie pads that wing out on their own covering lower part of net. But let's be real go look at highlights of gretzky and other 80s players. ALOT of those goals they scored would not go in today. The pool of talent teams have to pick goalies from today is much bigger than in the 80s. You could take ALOT of those 80s goalies train them to play today's style and give them today's equipment and they still wouldn't make 3rd string on an AHL team today

NHL was way better back then when there were only Northeast US and Canadian Teams in the Stanley Cup Final. The NHL was way better before the WHA merged with it in 1979. Then again the NBA also was way better before the ABA Teams merged with it in 1976. Fact is Janet Gretzky wanted him to play in Detroit not LA. His Dad Walter Gretzky is the one who told him to go to LA so blame his Canadian Dad for telling him to go to LA not his Wife. As soon as Gretzky went to LA in 1988 that was the beginning of the end of the NHL to me personally. When I go down to Florida, Arizona, Las Vegas or Southern California I don't give a blank about Hockey yet the American Owners have a ridiculous obsession the last 35 years doing everything to push the NHL in the Southern US every year since Gretzky went to LA.

Goring built like Orr. Such great mobility. Has great records in minor hockey. Junior hockey and cups in nhl. Yet no hall of fame. Scum bags not putting these western boys in. Just pure scum. He also was the best player in the playoffs. Great pressure player.

Thanks to Islanders Pride, I've been watching so many wonderful games from 1980-1984. I much prefer listening to Westfall-McDonald and Gordon-Espo than the Hockey in Canada Night crew. The Canada crew seemed to have a strong bias against the Islanders. At least Gordon and Espo gave the Islanders respect and credit.
