Featured is Game 9 between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren from the 2023 World Chess Championship match. It’s a Ruy Lopez, Berlin Defense but without a queenless middlegame surfacing. By move 15 we can observe a mostly symmetrical position. Nepomniachtchi’s knight on g3 and Ding’s knight on a6 act as the primary positional imbalance as play sharpens. Going into game 9 Ian Nepomniachtchi leads Ding Liren 4.5 to 3.5. The 2023 World Chess Championship is a best of 14-game match being played in Astana, Kazakhstan. The first player to earn 7.5 points will receive the lion's share (60%) of the approximately $2.2 million prize pool and claim the most prestigious title in chess: 'World Chess Champion'.

I've been watching this WCC recaps on this channel recently. Just crossed my mind to check how long am I subscribed to this channel, and it's since May 16, 2007. I was like GAWD DAAAYUM I'm that old 😖. Wasn't a very consistent watcher tbh, watched a lot of other chess youtubers in the meantime. There are really so many channels these days, where one can find interesting chess stuff :). Used to watch all the Gotham's recaps and loved them. Just recently wanted smth different, maybe a little more chill and less distracting, and it's perfect here :). Not saying Gotham's recaps are bad or anything like that. I also like Ben Finegold's WCC recaps :). So people, no need to hate on others, they just different :)

I looked at 15 Ba2. It looks like the only way for white to improve his position is Nh4 targeting the f5 square. If you don't see Nh4, it is hard to find a way to improve the position for white. It is about equal and nearly symmetrical. It would explain the strange waiting move Ba2.
@trentonrothan9724
@trentonrothan9724 Жыл бұрын
I just now noticed Qe2 is another way to improve for white. The point is to control b5 and prepare Ba2. Perhaps he messed up the move order, overlooking the difference.

I wonder about on move 10. Why not Nd8 to e6 instead of Nb8? Then black can aim for Nh5 to f4. Similar to what white does in the ruy lopez sometimes. Especially when white plays 12.h3, 2 moves later. It seems like a knight landing on f4 would be really strong since any g3 would hang the h3 pawn.
@faznaz7455
@faznaz7455 Жыл бұрын
I don’t think black should play Nf4 at all if the e5 square is under white’s control because then white can take on f4 with the bishop and push e5 himself which in turn makes the f4 pawn very loose. Since the Bishop on b5 has done it’s job, i would drop it back because I don’t want the bishop trapped when i play Nc4 because you have c6. Therefore i would prepare Nc4 by playing Be2 or Bd3 and I don’t think black is even in time to play Ne6 either without some positional concession. Black still lacks some coordination of his pieces. The knight on f4 may look appealing but concretely, the white bishop on c1 will snap it off the board and white is the one who controls the initiative therefore black has to respect white’s play with Nc4 pressuring e5 by switching to a different plan.
@projectryan88
@projectryan88 Жыл бұрын
@@faznaz7455 Thanks for that explanation. It makes a lot of sense now. Nc4 is really strong, I didn't see that. Black would not be in time to go Ne6. I believe you are right. Black would likely have to go knight back to c6 and defend e5 after Bd3 preparing Nc4.

As someone who is not too invested, I would love a small recap of the score at the beginning. You did that at the start, but stopped that now. Something like 'score is X to Y in a first to Z'. (I don't even know the score and Z at this point, that's why I am asking.) I know Iapomnitchi is ahead by 1 point, but I am interested in how much games Ding has left to catch up

Super recap! One suggestion- the tale of the tape at the end is great, but could you also put an Eval bar on the side of the board? It'd be super helpful visually, especially when you deviate from the game to potential other lines.

I want a chess commentary channel that details the game but leaves out the "what would happen" if they moved another way. Maybe in an intense end game, to show how they could have won but beginning and middle game, I just want to follow the actual game. One of my fav commentators started doing more "but if" variants than the actual game. Anyone get what I'm trying to say? If so, what's your thoughts?
@jimmyvanhorn4831
@jimmyvanhorn4831 Жыл бұрын
Really though, the whole concept of chess positions are "what if this" "what if that" .That is what is going on in the position. The piece positions and tensions are apparent for anyone to see on the board if you know how the pieces move. What is happening, however, are the possibilities in the position. That is how a game is covered. Perhaps it's too in depth for you but I personally think Jerry's ~25 min analysis' are perfect.
@judemorales4U
@judemorales4U Жыл бұрын
@@jimmyvanhorn4831 I am new so you are correct. And this channel is one of my favorites. It was more of an idea than being critical. Agadmator was my first fav. He is professional and "no drama show". But he does so much of that, that I found myself going to other commentators. So, your comment is well taken, it's just me and the learning curve I'm in.
@WarblerObserver
@WarblerObserver Жыл бұрын
Commentators go through the "what-ifs" because it's the best way to explain the reasoning behind the moves. If hypothetical lines aren't explained, then the only things you're left with are vague, shallow strategic principles, which are only a small part of why players choose to make specific moves.
