I remember that exact Harry Potter game. I have a cute story about it as well. I was like 7 at the time when I won my Gameboy from a chip packet competition. Got Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for Christmas later. There was a part of the game - Charms Class - where you had to remember Professor Flitwick's movements as he levitated a variety of objects. According to Dad after I asked him for help, it was impossible to remember the number of moves you were expected to remember to progress. As a youngling, it was upsetting for me that I couldn't get past this seemingly simple puzzle. So, my parents decided to help. Mum sat down with a notepad, while Dad watched the screen and helped me remember all the movements. Together, the three of us overcame charms class; Dad would call out the motions, Mum would transcribe them, then she'd read them back to us as I input the movements. My parents were never a big fan of video games at all, so to this day it's a fond memory because they went to that trouble. Thanks Mum and Dad. For anyone curious, the actual fight with Voldemort was easier than bloody charms class.

There was a similar ordeal with Final Fantasy X-2, if I remember correctly. In a side quest, in order to deactivate (or reactivate? so much time has passed) the lightning towers in the Thunder Plains or whatever, you had to input some fairly long button combinations, a lot of which were frankly impossible to remember without some sort of mnemonics, in which I am sort of bad. So I cheated: I prepared a sheet of paper and a pen, and transcribed the symbols as they were shown on screen. They were written kind of badly because I wasn't looking at what I actually wrote, but they were exact nonetheless. Then I had more than enough time to repeat the whole sequence (some of them were about 12 symbols or so). And yeah, the final boss was much easier. (I don't even remember what it was.)

The power base converter actually didn't have any master system hardware in it at all. It was simply a cartridge form factor and pinout conversion. The Genesis actually was backwards compatible with the master system, and contained all the hardware needed to run the master system games other than the cartridge slot.
@thomasjenkins75069 жыл бұрын
+Roger Sullivan while that's true, it's pointless if you still have to buy a pin converter to make it work.
@MarurunLEB9 жыл бұрын

@thomasjenkins75069 жыл бұрын
MarurunLEB that may be true, but it's still not completely backwards compatible if you have buy an accessory to make it work.

+Roger Sullivan Didn't just contain the hardware. Actually contained pretty much the exact hardware. Its CPU was the same, just overclocked.
@BrySkye8 жыл бұрын
+Thomas Jenkins It meant the adaptor was considerably cheaper than if it had to have the Master System guts in it. You didn't _need_ to buy it either. If you were willing, you could technically take the console apart and wire the cartridge directly into it and it would work. Not exactly practical. A better example for what Ashens is talking about would be the Super Gameboy for the SNES or Gameboy Advance Player for the Gamecube. Those units basically had the Gameboy hardware inside them.

So in the aggregate there are 137 million people living in English speaking countries that use "colour" and 318 million in the U.S. using "color". The consoles that use the cables are multi-faceted as in they play more than one platform of games, and if you're into those games as well then your investment is sound (unless it is the Gamecube component cables then you are just getting ripped off). The blur was removed on the Game Boy Pocket. The Game Boy Color having a colour screen is the main reason for its existence
@zedorda13378 жыл бұрын
Gameboy Pocket had reduced blur but it was no where near removed. It is the refresh rate that reduces the blur and the Pocket had the same refresh rate as the original Gameboy just better technology in the screen. +Emarrel Probably to use existing screens. They didn't have a special screen made for just this, it would drive the price up. I own one, It takes a little bit of getting used to but it is really nice. And the screen is bright and crisp.

A lot of gaming channels use the Super Game Boy to record their Game Boy gameplay
@BlaizeTheDragon8 жыл бұрын
Mostly because it's the only way to record footage on-screen without having to go to emulation. I don't feel that Ashens gave the super gameboy enough credit though it's quite a nifty thing. I found the screen too small to play something like zelda on so being able to get it up on the TV was great.

Fun tip that might piss you off if you used to own one of these. Alot of kids like myself didn't know that if you turned the game boy on while holding a number of combinations of buttons, you can change the colour pallet for black and white gameboy games so it doesnt default to that shitty green and blue. You can use up to 3or4 colours and you can pick a colour scheme that matches the game alot better.
@derpinbird11808 жыл бұрын
Also you could put a gameboy colour game in a gameboy pocket and it would switch on. It even shows a screen telling you that the game doesn't work on this type of gameboy.
@RWL20128 жыл бұрын
+Derpin Bird it's old news and it's in the manual
@RWL20128 жыл бұрын
And you can get those error messages on a Game Boy Light and Super Game Boy as well, even the original Game Boy if you take the power switch cover off or load Game Boy Color games from an Everdrive or EMS-based flash cart etc

***** Im not talking about people who buy them off ebay and look them up online. I mean the ones who actually got one as a kid, honestly how many of those would have bothered to read the manual? me and my brother had gameboy colours as kids. As the older brother, he got first choice of colour, and picked the purple see-through plastic. Don't get me wrong, I loved my indigo version (it went nicely with pokemon blue), but I always slightly coveted the see-through plastic because it had an element of mystery and unknown awesomeness. You could see the guts of the thing, but not perfectly, and it hinted at this technology we just didn't understand as kids. Same reason some race cars have little glass panels through which you can see the engine
@SumeaBizarro8 жыл бұрын
I would argue that "the best way to play them" would be a gameboy advance SP brighter backlight model that is fully backwards compatible still, and has a backlit screen, they are less common than frontlit models but they are the boss, and best official hardware to go on about this. GBA even supports the same GBC enhancements too. I myself have a SP that is classic NES like with the insides of AGS-101 model in it. Built by me.
@spookylemon49476 жыл бұрын

+KillThad Actually, YES. The Genesis/Mega Drive utilized the original Master System 8-bit processor as its audio co-processor and had a lot of features geared toward backward compatibility built in from the get-go. The Power Base Converter was mostly just a cartridge adapter.

+Guerilla Grue Plays Spot on. The Master System had a Z80 cpu. The MD/Genesis had a Motorola 68000, with a Z80 co-processor. All the converter did was make the cartridge fit, and tell the MD to switch off the 68000 and let the Z80 run the show.
