The twisted beauty of Nosk's theme is that it basically tells you what that... thing is doing. When the music is 'quiet', it is lurking, waiting to catch you off guard. When it gets louder, the beast is jumping out to attack you with all its relentless brutality. And the way in which new disturbing sounds and scales appear in both segments with each iteration tells you how the battle is escalating, becoming more savage, more... violent. Until at last it reaches its climax and, abruptly, ends. No fanfare, no heroic or tragic feeling, just silence. The quiet, tense relief born of having survived the trap of a vicious predator. Art. Glorious, musical art.

Nosk is easily the scariest monster in this game, and the music for him is designed to match that terror perfectly. Appropriately, you won't hear that track for any other beast in the game. Even before you see him, everything about his lair is designed to entangle the player in a sense of creeping dread, like you're walking into a death trap. And if you should die the first time you battle him and go to face him again, that beast still has another trick under its twisted carapace that literally defies the standard formula for every other boss encounter. What Nosk is is a predator that dwells in the deepest, darkest tunnels beneath a kingdom, it can read minds and shape shift, and uses this to take on the form of it's preys loved ones. When you encounter it, Nosk is disguised as a sibling of the main character, All around it's lair are the bodies of everyone it killed, and if you read their minds you'll be given warnings of what Nosk is, cause their last thoughts were all about confused shock at seeing people they cared about being in front of them

Some of the sounds in the background of Nosk's theme is actually Deep Nest's ambience where Nosk resides. Funny thing with Nosk, he's effectively a shapeshifter. Thus we never truly know what he looks like because he has a spider-like form... and a flying insect form that's only used in a DLC area dedicated to boss gauntlets. His theme initially not being 'full' and being 'hidden' is fitting because of his very deceitful nature and the fact that he's an ambush predator also.

At 3:23, that "very disturbing" chord possibility took me IMMEDIATELY to Bohemian Rhapsody! Rather fitting, I think. At 4:05 "more notes," yes...right...onward to the first statement of, "...Mama..." Then you get into the "terrifying" part, and then in the rhapsody, there comes the words, "...sometimes I wish I'd never been born at all..." Wow! At around 6:24 here, things are matching up with about 2:53 onward with Dan's version of the rhapsody. Wild! Around 3:16 in the rhapsody, things get "...very, very frightening..." Perfect! From about 8:31, this track starts sounding like, (about 3:17) "Galileo! Galileo! Galileo! Galileo! Galileo, Figaro!" At 3:39 in Dan's rhapsody, the choral answer, "No! We will not let you go!" drops in, which is quite reminiscent of what begins to happen at 8:42 here. Of course there's a bunch more extended frenetic action in the rhapsody, but it ends up back to the same type of simple progression with which it began. Fantastic! I'm really beginning to want to try this game, but I'll either have to go through Steam or GOG, for my Windows 10 computer. I dislike Steam, intensely. As someone who has a decent understanding of it all I feel you explain it perfectly! If you want anymore suggestions there are actually quite a few Hollow Knight tracks that weren’t in that livestream. One of my favorites is “Truth, Beauty, and Hatred” Keep making great content! :)

One of my favorite things about hollow knight is how perfectly matched the boss music is to the aspects and personality of the bosses, it all feels so perfectly right

Couldn't have summed up my reaction to my first encounter with Nosk any better: "Jesus..."

This really gives me the same vibes as the blood starved beast from bloodborne. Nothing to complex. Just the same aggressive melody over and over again which is getting more intense over time. A wild animal. The design of the bosses itself are also quite similar.

It’s an insane track, the music is so senseless and chaotic but so fitting and terrifying. The melody makes no sense at all but at the same time it couldn’t be more correct.

I love the hollow knight soundtrack, but Nosk in particular for how well it conveys that unease that is appropriate for the fight.

This bosses variant that you encounter endgame has brought me so much pain, eventually learned how to do him hitless but those first few tries hurt. Anyway great review!

Music matters when it comes to building atmosphere in any piece of entertainment but in my opinion specifically in a video game because the medium is interactive. The sense of wonder when i explored Hallownest for the first time is something I’ll never get back. That said, I’m thankful for the journey.

I know this is unrelated and I’m not a patron (wish I could be.) But I have a suggestion. I know you heard “The Grimm trope”, but it has a sequel that I don’t think you heard since it’s not in the first album. The song is called “Nightmare king” and it’s theme for a rematch against Grimm (kinda) I think you’d really like it.

I never cared about this song but now I do and this is gonna be saved on my playlist

I've only listened to it while playing the game, and the game does an especially good job of immersing you and putting you on edge with Deepnest's atmosphere. But you're right, this song really feels like a "being hunted, and subsequently chased" theme, likely in a jungle. With minor tweaks this would slot perfectly as a Jurassic Park raptor theme.

I always love people getting startled by the sting in this track.

The way it gets quite then loud suddenly makes me imagine the horror of trying to run and hide from a predator stalking me and praying it doesn't catch me

You should, every time you listen to a song relating to a certain character, make a guess at the end of the video about what type of character it is. Just came here from your ASGORE video and you had NAILED him! I would love to see you do this.

OH GOD THE END IS TERRIFYING And "jesus" is the perfect summary of the song in a word.
@jesusprado7046 Жыл бұрын
I'm unsure where I could make this suggestion, but I highly recommend a specific track in ULTRAKILL 's soundtrack. A track by the name "Order" I feel like you'd be able to break down the emotion it represents perfectly.
