Definitely the part about new technologies, not just the increased numbers, and making developers lives easier by not making them use everything PS5 has to offer in their first game.

The teardown will be the full on consumer reveal; Road to PS5 was primarily held for developers. Most exciting part - the hardware surrounding the SSD and how tightly the SSD is integrated into the system and finally, a next gen leap in audio. If you have the time, it would be very interesting to hear your thoughts on the hardware in the Xbox SX and what their different approaches will mean for the games on each platform. Great job btw!

Mark Cerny took a similar approach with the launch of the PS4 and it showed then as well. Developers loved it (especially compared to the PS3) and for a long time it was clearly the "better" console when compared to the Xbox (you could see via direct comparisons of games that came out on both). The later refresh in the generation with the Pro and the X muddied the waters a lot.
@Ben-Rogue4 жыл бұрын
I'd disagree that "Sony went all out in terms of the consumer". Not having PS1 and PS2 backwards compatibility and not working on PS3 backwards compatibility is a real thumb in the eye, especially considering how hard MS is working in backwards compatibility. I'd like to see them offer a PS5 'Pro' with full backwards compatibility, even if it means having the older systems hardware built in. I'd gladly pay another $100-$150 for this functionality, if I could keep my PS3 and select older titles alive and playable in 4k, and I'm sure a lot of others would too

Audio in games is "appreciated" the same way that sound design is "appreciated" in film. That is to say, nobody seems to notice it when it's done well, only when something isn't quite working. You can kind of see this in a lot of people's reaction to the audio segment of the Road to PS5 presentation, even though personally, I think this may be the biggest advancement in immersion that we may be seeing for the next-gen hardware.
@MrMoviePhoneEx4 жыл бұрын
It’s a double edged sword, I work in film and television, the audio is usually around 60% of what makes a project work - people may or may not notice it when it’s there, but they sure as hell will notice when it’s not, if it’s the wrong choice, if it’s cheap stock, if it’s... Etc. The fact that both companies are trying to pay serious attention to audio is really exciting, the customer won’t appreciate it, but it will be an integrate part of their play experience all the same. The trick will be getting the average consumer to invest further into any set of speakers or headphones that can take advantage of it.

When everything is taken together it feels like the PS5 was built with a design philosophy around Immersion. No load screens, ability to seamlessly play a game from start to finish. Like God of War but without the design team having to create all those windy boat rides, crawl spaces and walks through the fast travel portals. It'll be a single second of something and then boom, there. Mix that with the capabilities of the 3D audio. I mean damn. This chip has enough power to actually handle 5000 PSVR sound sources. That's kind of crazy. So it definitely has enough power to handle 200+ more complex sound sources and the equations that go along with them. But that audio is going to play a MASSIVE role in Immersion and Sony really went as far as they could with it, even building custom hardware. Then you have the more advanced controller with much improved feedback and adaptive triggers and all that. So everything about what is happening on screen will be geared toward an immersive experience. Resident Evil 8 or 9? Forget about it lol. You'll be looking around your room the whole time wondering where all the banging is coming from. Can't wait. This generation of games is going to be absolutely amazing especially from Sony Studios. My biggest takeaway and conclusion from the console design is that it’s designed to reduce developer workloads and increase creative output through the entire production chain. When looking at the hardware in combination with Unreal 5 it seems like it’s specifically designed to draw in high CGI assets, environments, models, and sounds directly into a game environment and get straight to the gameplay design rather than much of the development spend on optimization and technical challenges. I also see this completely changing the game industry where the art teams become almost entirely external. Possible even hiring Hollywood CGI teams or having major collaborations with movie studios for games and sharing assets. The platform imho has the potential to create as true industry and development shift in the way games are created and designed.

With PS5, it’s a sum of all parts, and I think that’s what I’m most excited for. Jim Ryan made it clear that with PS5 they’re focusing on next-gen games and that’s also exciting. Little or no load times, speed of the console, visuals potential, sound; it’s obviously a culmination of years of development that’s according to some people is literally going to push not only the gaming industry, but PC design forward as well. It’s crazy to think about that. And not to shit on the Series X but, the PS5 seems like a MUCH higher feat of engineering. The entire idea of the PS5 just sounds so revolutionary it’s really exciting to think about what devs are going to do with it!! Can’t wait for June 4th!!!

It's pretty interesting, seeing the contrast. The series x seems to be a simple huge spec upgrade to the Xbox 1, whereas the ps5 is pushing new boundaries with comparatively less power
@EhrineAshbark4 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of this shows the difference between the DNA of the two companies. Microsoft is, at it's heart, a software company, while Sony is a hardware company. This shows as well with the current generation where it's easy to argue that (at least at launch), the Xbox probably had the nicer front end for the OS, but the PS4 was the more technologically adept console. With the Series X, Microsoft have chased raw power while also going for the best current technologies out there (i.e. the current standard for SSD storage in a PC), while Sony have tried to think beyond that and bring forward new technologies. Raw power can only achieve so much. Out of the gate, I suspect not that much will differentiate them, although the raw power of the Series X will make some cross platform titles perform better there, but as time goes on and developers really get to grips with the potential of storage running that fast, combined with the audio engine (and thus being able to farm off far more of the traditionally CPU bound audio work), the PS5 has the potential to create some really stunning things, in much the same way as the PS3 eventually did.

Yah, although I'm no expert, it feels like MS just stacked high end components off the shelf, whereas Sony has a much deeper and broader vision. All this nonsense about TERAFLOPS is just a giant distraction for people who have no clue what they're talking about. Can't wait for Thursday, I think Sony will make a big splash. The XsX "gameplay" reveal will seem like a footnote in comparison.

In the past Sony have done very well at reading the tone and reacting (queue the "how to share games on PS4" video years ago), so I suspect they've taken that into account. With the, probably correct, rumours that PS5 will cost more to _buy_ than Xbox (although maybe not to make), they need to capitalise on reveal momentum and convince people it's a better _value_ console if they want to steal the early market.

So, this is exactly what Mark Cerny wanted, and this is what makes this video (or series of videos) so compelling to watch. Cerny wanted a gaming console by and for developers that want to create to make gamers happy and introduce and innovative new hardware AND EXPERIENCES. So, it's interesting to watch this because Cerny is now talking to a programmer that doesn't develop for their hardware. You get the sense this programer has plenty of education and experience that he follows this and points out that (like the Kraken, for example) is older been around a while but is perhaps more efficiently used on a console but all of this gets him really thinking, the wheels are turning in his head and he gets all of this. That's the goal, this guy buys into what Sony is taking about because Cerny perfectly speaks this guy's language. I would dare argue that Microsoft doesn't. Microsoft created the operating system that powers the tools used on a PC to develop his creation, but the console has its own way of speaking C or C+. It really appears this guy's actually intrigued and would like to try his hand at PS5 development and just because PC has no limits, just about, other than the hardware consumers have, PS5 is consistent and, again, Cerny speaks this guy's language where developers are just frustrated with Microsoft, Sony gets it, they're not all suits, like Microsoft are, Sony are game developers themselves trying to make things easy, Cerny is and was a game developer, he gets it. Kutaragi was a brilliant hardware man, not so much a developer so he was too far ahead and developers had to learn and catch up. Good job Cerny, this guy's understands and you can see in his face, he's actually impressed.

Sound in the UE5 Demo on PS5 hardware was REALLY great (listen to it with headphones!) and truely drove the overall impression home - I wonder if that has already been a direct effect of the Tempest engine stuff?
@kontro113dkhaoz24 жыл бұрын
Wow.... No.... Tempest will be a gimmick very much like the touchpad on the ps4 controller.... Sony always tries to push a new medium with their consoles in hopes it takes off, but, no, Unreal 5 has its own 3D audio solution that will just be easier for devs to use.... Xbox also has a very similar chip, but it will be more compatible with different software
@mipe38444 жыл бұрын
@@kontro113dkhaoz2 Cerny made it very clear that while Sony undertakes some heavy proprietory R&D regarding 3D audio software, the Tempest Engine itself is a custom designed (but freely usable) hardware unit that is just specifically great at handling (any) audio algorithms you throw at it. The idea is that (engine) developers at EPIC (and elsewhere) can run their own 3D audio code (and, indeed, other stuff that profits from it) on the Tempest engine to achieve great audio without putting any additional stress on CPU resources etc. Can we just appreciate that this holds great potential without turning it into a PS5 vs XBOX discussion? The fact that PS5 seems to have great audio capabilities does not mean that the new XBOX is bad at it ...
@kontro113dkhaoz24 жыл бұрын
@Krish Garg first of all, of course numbers matter, that is why we run benchmarks when the console is out , and they will prove it..... numbers dont matter when its comparing 2 totally different architectures, and like different CPU's from different generations, but that is not the case.... these consoles are totally identical as far as that, and that is when numbers matter.....go do your research and quit letting these mobile "devs" tell you what you want to hear..... He's not stupid, he knows the views are in making Sony seem "better than the raw numbers" and you all eating it up and letting forward compatability get away from you..... next next gen, they will kill off all your PS4 games and just allow PS5 on PS6(well, Lets be real, by that time, MS will either own Sony and Nintendo, or they will just partner up and have 1 Xbox Console that plays everything.... MS in charge of Online and the cloud.... Sony and Nintendo cant compete when Google and Apple, Amazon enter gaming.... Inevitable

@@mipe3844 first party will take advantage of it, but not 3rd.... Not when for the first 2 years ps4 and ps4 pro will be their priority consoles to sell as many games as possible.... Just how ValHalla is being held back by PS5..... Sad we might not get 4k 60 even though we can, just because the market leader isnt gonna be happy If they launch side by side at 4k 60 vs 4k 30.... even though xbox has marketing rights, ps5 weaker console will hold back these consoles for a while... And for the record, xbox's audio solution is way better than tempest.... Dolby Atmos has been doing this and specializing on it for the past 3 years

I’m most looking forward to the immersion sensation gained by 3D Audio , and also the SSD potential to stream in huge open worlds. Loading times will probably be the biggest “I didn’t release how much I wanted it” feature because I think we are so accustomed to loading times being normality. Imagine if a movie paused for 30 seconds every 20 minutes... it would be a much less immersive experience. Thanks for the analysis - you’re really good at this and I learned a lot from your commentary.
@PierrePotonnier4 жыл бұрын
Especially with those new ssd priorities. I hate when a game throws at you a very intense Cimenatic or piece of gameplay and then EVERYTHING cuts off for the next cinematic/gameplay moment even the music. It's so important! It's like the technical team comes after the storytelling one and decide to ruin everything. Even a badly placed loading screen could be so much better with the audio continuing and fading the old atmosphere into the new one.
@jmi_music4 жыл бұрын
Pierre Potonnier Absolutely. Worst thing for me is during a loading screen I tend to pick up my phone without thinking and open social media. It’s a total immersion breaker and usually exposes me to something depressing or angering that lingers in my mind, and which alters my enjoyment of the game. For that reason alone it could be a game changer for me.
@frowy14 жыл бұрын
yup, I've slowly been losing interest in gaming over a few years or so, and I didn't know why, until it dawned on me, after having Come back to gaming during this COVID situation, how unacceptable load times had become. I was like 'oh... yeah, i forgot this was a thing. let me just go make some tea and toast and sweep up a bit while i load into this solo dungeon'' I manage about an hour of playing every now and again before losing my mind. My flat is much tidier now tho'.
@jmi_music4 жыл бұрын
Richard Frow haha, for sure. Reminds me of the worst offender for me - Fallout 4. Loading into a building with nothing of interest, and then loading out back into the main world, and then loading into the next building and so on. I think I spent more time on my phone than playing the game. Tidying is a good idea.

Talking about the 3D Audio hardware was most exciting, and in particular, the part where Mark talks about the challenges of blending between locations, source areas as opposed to points, etc. Visualizing the locations as a point on a sphere around the player's head, then taking the idea of area on that sphere, it's not a hard jump to then think of volumetric sources, simulating depth from the player as a function of volume/phase. So, not only could you visualize an area or shape of audio source on the surface of that sphere, you could extend the source boundaries in depth, describe 3D shape with the source, attenuate the edges, make them softer, etc. So, much could be done with sound in that space. Imagine using these per-player calculations, and fine tuned source topographies to then filter the sounds through materials like dense fog, a shower of water, plant life, etc. So much information subtle information can hit the player that it seems a much easier step to accept the game world as real.

On the 3D audio HRTF model selection, if you can "match directions against different HRTF models", it would be cool to play a scene for VR players with a sequence of 3D audios and ask the player to look exactly to the direction each sound comes from. Then you can automatically switch to the next better scoring model and in a few seconds it could possibly get you a better (or even a perfect) match. Fun stuff!

Some fans in the gaming community who will remain nameless! Are trying to make out that the PS5 has been a reactionary cost cutting exercise, with less GPU CUs that have been overclocked to unstable levels, inadequate cooling that won't cope, and cost saving on the size of the SSD. When in fact the exact opposite is true, the PS5 appears to have been engineered from the ground up around that custom IO and SSD the point of which was to engineer a true next gen experience with zero bottle necks to push polygons at unheard-of speeds through that GPU..

We have almost photorealistic graphics for quite a long time, but to get realistic (as in: close to what you can see, instead of what a camera can capture) graphics we still have very long way to go - human perception can register that movement happened in very short timeframe, and a lot of effects (motion blur being primary example) are following camera behaviour more than real life perception. Arguably we still have a long way to come to reach the point where on-screen image is unrecognizable from looking through a hole in the wall (I'm not using "window" on purpose - glass in window does change your perception), and given how much or little graphics power changes, we'll probably have to wait at least one generation. Audio might (almost) get there with PS5, but this time it's video that'll be lagging behind.

@BIOSHOCKFOXX4 жыл бұрын
Nope, audio will become better, it will play a big part, but graphics are still what plays bigger part. What you probably mean is immersive, which is something different from what you describe. There is no game that will "fool" you in letting you think you are in game if you are not using VR headset...otherwise you are still staring at limited space screen with hands on keyboard and mouse, or gamepad. VR is only thing that lets you feel like that, but everything else constantly reminds you of being aware of your surroundings.
