18:00 I wouldn't call it nostalgic perversion. Fallout has a VERY specific style called Retro Futurism. It's what people from the 1950s thought what the FUTURE might look like, not a future where everything is 1950s. Take our time as an example. If people think that in the future, we will have starships that look like Startrek ships, THAT is futurism. To people 100 years from now, the Startrek aesthetic would be called RETRO Futurism. As opposed to a Retro future, which would be making all starships look like the Space Shuttle, because that's the style of what we used during the 2000s. It's an admittedly confusing, but VERY important distinction to be made with the Fallout series, because a LOT of people get this entirely wrong. Edit* I forgot to mention Bethesda Fallout, but especially starting with Fallout 4. Bethesda didn't understand the difference between Retro Futurism, and a Retro future setting, and so made this EXACT mistake when creating Fallout 4, where they incorrectly applied a Retro future aesthetic to Fallout's Retro Futurism aesthetic. This was nowhere near as bad in Fallout 3, but they definitely were NOT paying attention to Fallout's lore AT ALL in Fallout 4, and broke it more than a kit-kat bar full of swiss cheese. Edit* 41:07 Aight, hold up, that's too much for a title. Bungie Era Halo would like a word with you. Edit* Actually for Skyrim, it's the opposite. Lorkhan's followers didn't tear holes from Aetherius to Mundus, the followers of MAGNUS tore holes from MUNDUS to Aetherius creating the Sun and Stars. Edit* The relationship between the Hist and Argonians is actually a lot more wholesome than what you described it as. The REAL evil trees are the damn Graht Oaks who ensalved and control the Bosmer. The Argonians have a mutualistic relationship with the Hist, while the Bosmer are being parasatised by the Graht Oaks. Edit* I probably won't edit this comment again, but it's just interesting how little can actually be fit into these small summaries of each series. Edit* 1:01:38 Old Ones, not Old Gods. Edit* The Necrontyr were NOT created by the Old Ones, but were rather an ENTIRELY independantly evolved species. Also, they didn't have issues with power or their star specifically, and weren't struck down forseeking the secrets of immortaliy. They had problems with their BODIES that were riddled with infinite cancer because of their unstable star, so they lived in constant pain, and only for like 30 years max. They had discovered the Old Ones, and asked for a cure, but were denied, so they ATTACKED the Old Ones, and were beaten back. They retreated to THEIR HOMEWORLD. THAT is the star where they eventually found the C'tan (not pronounced curtan). Oh man, listening after this point, it's a jumble nonsense. Yeah, there's a lot of keywords there, but almost none of it is in the right place. The Old Ones didn't create gods, they created the Eldar and Krorks, who created their own gods. I could go on, but I almost don't want to. There's too much to correct. Edit* In fact there's so much oddly wrong info in this video, that I can't help but think that it was mostly written by A.I., and NOT double checked. The Elders? Literally NOWHERE in 40k are the Eldar called the Elder. The ONLY thing that could make such an absurd mistake in A.I. Not that I really have anything against A.I. specifrically right now, but the fact that there's so much wrong info means that SOMETHING wrong went down.

Elder Scrolls lore is by far my favorite western game lore. I been playing the games for a decade but only recently I found out how amazing and deep the lore of that series goes, because honestly the games do not do a good job at showing it to you. I love it so much that sometimes I spend hours and hours just reading the wiki, it feels like I am reading the bible with the amount of history that series has. For anyone interested, I highly recommend that when you play the games you actually read the books you find. You learn the lore way more from them than the games quests. Seriously, if Bethesda was smart they could have made so many movies or tv series using the extensive lore, and as long as it was written and produced well I am sure it could been really profitable for them. It's like having a gold mine that you rarely use. Dragon Age is another western game series with lore that I really enjoyed. For some reason it wasn't mentioned in this video but in my opinion it's even better than Mass Effect lore. Also not mentioned in this video is Baldur's Gate lore. Or the D&D lore in general, which countless RPGs use, so learning about it would take as long as learning the entire history of our real life world, but from the amount I learned with the games I played I would say its very worth the time. Btw, since Xenoblade is mentioned here, I am obligated to recommend Xenogears/Xenosaga, which was how the whole Xeno series started. Even though those original series have almost nothing to do with Xenoblade lore, I can confidently say that Xenogears had the best and deepest lore in japanese RPGs. It is well written sci-fi, mature, extremely depressing at times, heavily inspired by our real world religions and philosophies, all created by a man and his beloved wife. Anyone who enjoys a good story should play that game, and if you enjoy what you read in the game you can also go read the Perfect Works book, because yes, that game had enough lore to fill a book. Xenosaga was a prequel trilogy that also expands on the deep lore of Gears. And Xenoblade is pretty much just a whole new series that only borrows some of the original Xeno lore, but funny enough at the end of the third game they make very clear references to Xenosaga lore, so maybe the next game they make will really go back to it's roots.

It's me, the nerd who spends too much time thinking about Myst. Just wanted to correct your line at 58:41. Gehn is Atrus' father, not his son. Atrus' grandfather is named Aitrus, however. So Gehn is Aitrus' son, but you never encounter Aitrus in any of the games. Atrus is the main character that you help in Myst 1-4.
@kathleenschofield40864 ай бұрын
As a follow up: it is disputed in the lore, but the generally accepted theory (the one held by Atrus) is that the Art connects people to existing worlds that they describe. Gehn holds the position that practitioners of the Art create worlds from scratch, which fuelled his god complex, but the lore seems to side more with Atrus' position than Gehn's.

Dang. Acting like the FNaF lore is set in stone is wild to me. If you're not part of the community of theorizers, please know that 99% of what is being said is conjecture or just extremely dressed up for drama rather than what is for sure what happened. The community can't even agree on what year any of the deaths occur in, let alone motivations or typical daily lives of characters.

Yep, it's an insult that FNAF was included there as a lore game when what little lore there is, is super vague and incoherent, fanbase can't even agree on basic things, and no matter which theory you like, all of them are just so basic in comparison to DX or Fallout lore.

As someone really into the Myst series, I gotta make a slight correction to your lore. The antagonist of Riven Ghen (Atrus' father) indeed believes that the D'ni are like gods capable of creating the very worlds they link to. However Atrus has a different world view. Atrus believes the art of linking doesn't create the world but rather creates a gateway to a world that used to exist, currently exists, or will exist. Its difficult to say which one is actually correct. On the one hand, modifying the linking book has a direct affect on the world that people within the world can see happen and can stabilize or destabilize it showing an aspect of creation. However if there are significant modifications, the world seems to be on an entirely separate timeline which leans towards Atrus' theory of linking to preexisting universes. *Spoilers for the prequel book below* In the book Myst: Book of Atrus, it describes as Atrus and his father Ghen explore Age 37 (Ghen never gave his ages any names or used the names of the natives). One of the major features of the age was a giant wall of mist surrounding the island due to the warm temperature of the water around the island colliding with the cold water of the ocean. Ghen, annoyed at the native's superstition of the mist wall and trying to reinforce his image of being a god to the native residents of the age decided to make the ocean water warm to remove the mist. This did change the age, though it was rather disastrous by significantly reducing the ocean level and causing a drought. After arguing with Atrus about it, Ghen tried to "fix" Age 37 by striking out a bunch of the parts he had added rather than figuring out the underlying cause of the issues. When Atrus linked back to it after the "fix", he found it as if he and Ghen had never been there at all. None of the residents remembered him and were back to speaking their native language rather than D'ni as Ghen taught them. Basically by striking out the passages he did, Ghen linked to an entirely different version of Age 37 which gives credence to Atrus' theory that the books linked to preexisting realities. So hard to say who is actually correct as there exists evidence for both positions.

I agree that JRPGs and their unique perspectives or characters can get a little hard to get behind, but the Drakengard/Nier series has some of the craziest lore for real. Each game has a beautiful story on its own but the loose connections between them are a huge cherry on top.

Kinda surprised not to see the lore of Battletech/Mechwarrior on the list. Easily tied with Mass Effect as my favorite sci-fi universe! Just as, if not even more, grimdark than Warhammer, also with decades of stories sunk into an ever-expanding and extremely dense/historied universe. Amazing video though! I'm a new subscriber, so forgive me if it was covered elswhere.

Great video but it would’ve been nice for you to cover Spec ops the line. That game is so underrated and the lore behind it is absolutely crazy! Definitely think you should look into it if you haven’t already because it’s top tier!

Is this your Kirby gameplay? Bruh.. there's a shield literally telling what you have to do^^ Good video

a sign, not a shield. "shield" wäre Schild im Sinne von Rüstung, nicht Schild im Sinne von Informationstafel.

Me hearing about tyranny for the first time and noticing so many similarities with the lore of Genshin... Since I started understanding genshin some years ago, I started noticing how many games pull from Gnosticism xD

Hmm a biochip, like neural link? Hmm maybe Kingsman 1 plot did have a lot going for it, that and the church scene with free bird goes wild, I’m talking about the plot from deus ex where the bio chip makes people turn into monsters, and tbh I wish the subplot with the Peralez in cyberpunk was a lot longer as that’s the kind of quests I want a lot of in the sequel games if we get them

It’s weird to see FnaF on a list celebrating lore when the story is so utterly broken. The story is filled with too many plot holes to possibly count and each game only further creates more. Even the lord and savior of FnaF fans GameTheory fully admitted to create a complete timeline he has to ignore plot holes and just straight make shit up. It’s very clear the writers do not have any real answers they just make a bunch of vague mysteries and let the fans do the hard work for them. It’s lazy and it works every time. The series is horribly written.

Ya I always base it for myself more around the ideas which I think the base ideas and lore in FNAF is wild. Honestly a lot of good lore is so convoluted or messy (every fromsoft game for example) which sometimes is part of the fun
@ftrwrwbg6 ай бұрын
@@FranklyGaming I don’t deny that, but take a FromSoft game as an example then. In those games the story is the farthest thing from spoonfed right? You really have to put in work if you want to know what’s going on. But for the fan who do put in that work they are able to create a very solid story they all agree is absolutely what happened. There are little bits here and there people debate over, but for the most part there is a solid structure everyone can agree on. With FnaF there are going to be people who think just the little summary you provided is wrong. What should be the most basic simple details are debated. No one can agree on almost anything because the story is such a mess. That’s why the series irks me so much. None of the games you listed are perfect in the backstory, but the lore they contain is way more thought out and connected down to the tiniest details. I’d like to see FnaF improve.

Yooo thank you for the great work on this vid! I'm only two games in and it's already awesome, and there are so many mores I have played (maybe 75%) I'm looking forward to hear about :) If anyone wants more, I can suggest Doom: Seems like a game where you just run & gun, but it actually has a pretty complex story and worldbuilding ^^
