My late step dad was a coroner/medical examiner, so the guy that determined your cause of death, worked at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and only left the job after suffering PTSD from the Piper Alpha disaster (oil rig explosion). Grew up seeing super cool medical books and journals, he loved that he couldn’t creep me out as I found a genuine interest in the work he used to do. He always said he liked working with people after they’d passed because it meant they got treated with dignity and respect, and he found it peaceful in a way. Of course being a cheeky teenager he would sometimes tell me “because they can’t talk back, unlike some lassies”. And Samhain (Halloween) was our fave holiday, Gaelic Pagan Scots family, and we just really enjoyed all the spooky tales, superstition, the candied fruit and history too it. Still my fave holiday to this day, often remembering my late (step) dad and how he loved rocking out to Bat Out Of Hell in the car on Samhain!
