From what Emilia Clarke -- the actress playing Daenerys Targaryen -- has said, the horse's heart was basically a gummy bear, but shaped like an animal's heart. She said that they made the gummy taste horrible to help with her performance, so that moment you see in the episode where she almost puked it back was an authentic reaction from the actress. On top of tasting horrible, Clarke is a tiny woman, and the gummy was about half the size of her head. On top of it all, she complained that, even though her character only had to eat one heart, she -- the actress -- had to eat about eight of them because of multiple takes and different camera angles (even during the scene where Viserys is talking to Jorah, she's eating the heart in the background) and there was a new candy heart every single time. It was also filled with fake blood made of corn syrup, and she was instructed to keep pressure on the gummy so that when she bit into a blood pocket -- and they were randomly placed in the gummy, so she never knew when that was going to happen -- it would splash on her. Clarke said that by the end of the take, she was covered in it, and it was completely uncomfortable and sticky. Apparently the fake blood glued her to a toilet seat at one point.

The book was a description of noble marriages, Ned was looking at the Baratheon line and it was noted that the black hair is a persisting characteristic; Robert and his 2 brothers all had black hair, as did their dad and so on. All of Robert's bastards also had black hair. Ned also looks specifically at any previous marriages between Baratheons and Lannisters and notes that these unions all result in black haired children...... until Joffrey and his 2 siblings. If you remember Jon Arryn (the previous Hand of the King) was reportedly killed because he started asking questions. His final words were "the seed is strong".

It was Brandon the swordsman of the family, not Ned, thats what GRRM said, while D&D just loooooove to make Starks looks like they're the best at everything. Ned is a good military commander but not a spectacular swordsman; he mainly gained a reputation as a fighter because he killed Ser Arthur Dayne, one of the greatest swordsmen of all time, but he didn't really earn it, and only two living people know what really happened. That's the real reason he doesn't fight in tournaments. Going by the books, Loras is probably the best swordsman in the Seven Kingdoms, but he's a tourney knight with no true experience in war. Jaime, Barristan, Brienne, and Oberyn are also all top fighters. IIRC, in the first book, Thoros of Myr won the tournament melee, which wasn't in the show (a lot of characters from later seasons were in the books from the start).

Just a note (NO SPOILER): When Tyrion demanded a trial by combat and the man who was supposed to fight him said "I will gladly fight the imp's champion" and Tyrion replied: "I wouldn't be too glad sir, I name my brother, Jaime Lannister" and everyone almost freaked out. When Deanarys (I dunno how to spell their friggin' names, okay, nerds?!?) was eating that horse heart, I kept imagining her thinking, "If I can keep down Arby's, I can keep down this!" & now you know exactly what the previous King's Hand discovered that got him deaded. I saw it click in Nikki's head when she gave Steven the ol shifty-eye like, "wait a minute....". Tyrion is my favorite. So funny. Best line of the night: STEVEN: So brother/sister had a kid together, huh? Think that's why Joffrey seems a little slow? NIKKI: No, that's why Joffrey's such an ASSHOLE." LOL. You are fast becoming one of my favourite reactors. Regarding Viserys. The prince fled Roberts rebellion as an eight year old with his newborn sister under the care of a faithful but older knight who passed away while they were still young. Viserys grew up in exile, dreaming of the throne that was his, while being known as 'the beggar prince' by those who grudgingly sheltered them. Yes, he was not a nice man at all, but I always felt a little sorry for him.
