There's tube amps like the Ampeg PF50T and Fender Bassman 100T, that use post power amp signal. So you can get tube power distortion through the DI and make the stage PA system the tube amplifier itself

Thanks! I'm wondering if you will explain the signal flow from the bass? You thump a string, it goes out your bass' cable to the DI? Same jacks as the bass? The signal is in the DI and you XLR that to a soundboard? How does the sound get to the amp? or is the DI cabled to the amp and the soundboard? thanks in advance.

Use a DI output which sends the processed signal through the out if available then you get the signal the way the amp processed it instead of a dry pre-amp signal. On Some amps you can choose the mixed or processed signal and others might only offer the processed signal while some may only allow you to get a dry signal.

Is there some coloration or other effect on the tones when you phase correct? If so, I think I would just pass the phase correcting step and just go with either DI for pristine tones or mic'd cab for vintage / organic tones, not both together. Preferably DI since the guitar, the vocals, and the drums are already recorded mic'd.

Great video. Here's what I do. I'm a guitarist, and I have a bunch of pedals and an amp which makes up what I consider to be "my tone". So I always mic up the cab for recording my guitar parts. I have a bass, and I can play really simple bass parts, but I don't have a bass amp, and it sounds like garbage if I play it through the guitar amp. Not enough bottom. So I just DI it and use a VST bass amp plug in to get the sound I am looking for. Best of all worlds as far as I am concerned.
@ataconazi
@ataconazi 6 жыл бұрын
he didn't really talk about pre/post you can go DI before or after your sound gets colored by the Amp as long as your amp has the option. if you go post you still miss the cab/Mic color obviously.

Cool video. One thing to touch on might be pre vs post eq on DI out from the amp. As a sound guy and a bass player, a lot of bassists I would mix had been beaten into submission by other engineers and felt like it was a sin to send me a post eq signal. I liked the post eq signal on amps with really nice pre-amp sections because without it you pretty much loose that part of the signal chain.

Ya I try to send it post EQ to them so that they have less work to do (hopefully!).

It brings some life and character back to the DI sound too, especially with a nice bass/preamp combo. I always wanted to let people sound like themselves. Your tone is a big part of how you present your playing to the audience.

Thank you for posting this Jayme, very informative. What about the possibility of going direct without an amp? The church I play at has horrific acoustics and our worship director would like to remove amps altogether. We have a poor man's in ear system, the drummer and I share a single feed. She tasked me with researching the options and suggested the Line 6 Helix LT. I know most bass amp manufacturers produce some sort of direct box/effects unit. Do you have any opinion on this? Thanks in advace for your feedback.
@deadbeatstudios
@deadbeatstudios 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Miguel! Ya I do that all the time. Removing the amps won't fix your horrible acoustics, however. It'll give you less problems to deal with but it'll hardly fix anything. I think that any DI box will work just fine, but some are more cleaner than others. I'm a fan of the Radial JDI myself. Thanks for reaching out Miguel!

won't it be easier to put up acoustic panels in your church rather than invest in new gear? i mean, unless everyone in the audience is going to be wearing in-ear monitors the room acoustics are always going to be in effect. it sounds like maybe your music director just wants control of your eq and volume in their hands (or the sound-engineer/mixer) rather than the musicians. (which is probably a very good idea- they can hear the overall mix better than the stage musicians). a helix isn't cheap, and definitely doesn't solve your acoustic problem. All that aside, i've heard very, very good things about the motown di from Acme... yup like roadrunner cartoons. but bear in mind it's just a di, not a pre-amp or eq. The Avalon Di is nice for some tonal presets, but is expensive and geared more toward recording. but it doesn't sound like you want a di at all to me. for what you're talking about it sounds like almost any multi effects processor might work, even older ones like a boss gt-6 or a pod which would be way more affordable than a helix. that being said, one of my former band mates bought a helix and loves it. it's a very flexible piece of gear. but just one line 6 helix, for one instrument is 1,000 USD. i don't know how big your church is, but some corner sound traps would probably help a lot more than ditching your amp and buying a helix. you can build sound panels yourself from rockwool insulation bought from home depot or lowes pretty affordably. (that's actually the very best material to make them out of). As Jayme said, the Radial JDI is a really good di. i use a countryman type 10, a little labs IBP, and the di output on my Peterson strobo stomp pedal. all good very basic di's, but it doesn't sound like super-basic is what you're looking for?

Very good demonstration. You didn't explain how the phase correction actually operated to fix your blended sounds. Is it simply computer automated, are you using straightforward phase reversal, or did you delay (ie shift) the D.I. input by micro amounts by ear, to fix the audio discrepancy?

How is possible to do both direct and micing at the same time? Guitars/basses don't have two outputs where you can plug one cable into an audio interface and a second cable that plugs into the amp. So is the solution to use an amp that has an output jack that can send a clean signal?

what if you're going into an audio interface and using amp software vst's? Does a DI Box matter in that situation?
@deadbeatstudios
@deadbeatstudios 6 жыл бұрын
Not if the interface has a HiZ input - the DI box converts unbalanced low- to medium-level, high-impedance signal from a bass to a mic-level, balanced and low-impedance signal. If your interface has the HiZ input then that is being done for you, unless you have a DI with color to it (like the Noble Preamp or A-Designs REDDI or something). Hope that helps!

However, what I am asking is when we plug the bass wire from the amp to the audio interface function, does the sound from the amp cut off because it is connected to the audio interface system or will you hear sound both in the Bass Amp and the audio interface system at the same time? But, wouldn't that colour of the mic be lost in the mix and simply not be noted by the audience? Or does that help cutting the mix? And cannot that be emulated by processing the signal, thus being easier than finding the mic sweet spot and then processing that with phase correcting?
@cammarc
@cammarc 6 жыл бұрын
Humberto Silva It really helps. A lot of people think highs are what's gonna get them to cut through the mix, but it's really the mids that do the job and mids are a lot of that colour from the amp. Technically it should be possible to emulate it without actually having the signal from the cab, but in reality it's not really gonna get quite there. I guess you just have to try out what you like best.

But I am starting to use a DI to FOH and I am wondering how to carve my own sound... I mean, with the amp, I hear what my bass sounds like. Through the DI, only the sound engineer receives the signal and pushes it to FOH or my in-ear monitors. But how should I know how to set my preamp to get a killer sound???

For me the problem with di's is when you are using a effected sound, so for me 90% of the time i have fuzz or distortion this into a di sounds harsh and abrasive, to then have to eq the di isnt something a lot of sound guys will do for you, they will think oh he wants to sound like that lets get levels.......this is why i have chose to go down the cab emulation route with my two notes stuff, i can emulate my 810 with a mic, and they have all the positives of a di, no bleed etc but you have a signal that works for me. i get you are dealling with clean bass here but just my two cents

Don't overcomplicate things, do it as simple as possible. I use to talk to the tech before soundcheck and ask if he is willing to try my post EQ DI - tone. All I have heard about this option is "OK, I'll get you out of FOH just as you go in". If there is enough time I ask for an additional miked up channel, and choose then, what to use in the mix.

hello, i am currently having this dilemma, i was thinking of buying a higher watts bass amp, or should i get a powered speaker? i have an Aguilar Tone Hammer DI, and i was planning to bypass the amp head even if i buy one. please i need some input on this regard.
@deadbeatstudios
@deadbeatstudios 6 жыл бұрын
If its for smaller gigs you might be able to get away with a small powered wedge. I wouldn't try to carry the room with it though :)
@jonathandagcutan5700

but regarding the tone? do you think it would somehow be similar? coz logically, if i by-pass the preamp/eq of the amplifier, i was just using it as a power amp for the cab right? or will it produce a different tone coz the cab was using a more bass specific speakers?

another follow up question, if i go amp-less and go directly to powered speaker, should i use the line out or the XLR output?
@deadbeatstudios
@deadbeatstudios 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, line out. As far as tone - you'll just need to try it out to see if it makes that much of a difference for you. Who knows? Could sound awesome! Or terrible haha

@@jme92685 If it's being sent POST then yes, if PRE then no. Of course, the effects of the speaker are completely bypassed because there's no microphone picking it up.

I *only* mic my 8x10 with a huge tube head on it, even for recording. There's just no other way to perfectly capture THAT sound, which was in my head for over 10 years before I got the gear in question. A good D.I. rig with VST's comes *damn* close, but no cigar. There's just a certain warmth, feel, and liveliness to tube amp-powered passive basses that active ones into D.I. rigs simply don't have, and even in a full mix, yes, my ears can tell a difference, because I don't just mix in bottom end and low-mid frequencies from the bass. I also mix in some upper midrange and treble to give the bass a more expressive sound.
