I had used the bend modifier on bundles of fiber mesh, though I'd not thought about using it on a low poly mesh. Nice trick, thanx for sharing. :)

Cool stuff. I think i will give the Zbrush deformers a shot since they seem simpler than Maya. I think i can mix Johan Lithvall's approach to making hair with yours and hopefully get an even better result!

I've been making my way through your videos on run-time hair creation, and I am curious as to what your preferred method is to date? Mainly between the one where you are using Curves to Geo in Modo versus ZBrush fiber mesh.
@HiredGunGames
@HiredGunGames 3 жыл бұрын
my preferred method will always be the industry standard of manually placing strips constrained to curves or modeling the hair directly and splitting the edges to transform the models to hair strips. it gets the best results faster. not faster in speed but faster in terms of less mistakes and less having to go back and redo everything.

dope vids! I see you have a lot of different hair vids, I just saw your houdini one with groom bear which tool do you like most to create hair with?
@HiredGunGames
@HiredGunGames 3 жыл бұрын
Blender Hair tool Addon has to be my favorite because it's extremely important to lay down hair cards and see the textures at the same time. If you just lay down cards with not textures you cant see overlapping and you might not like the end result
@YuuJer

After skimming through hundreds of videos I think this is the only hair card demonstration using zbrush. Thank you for this! I do have a question, can you apply normal/bump map into this? Second, how do you actually render these kinds of hair, especially when you bring colored maps, is there a way to see them in real time render? I dont want to end up in a situation where my colors are all wrong and i find out in the end in bpr render.
@HiredGunGames
@HiredGunGames Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I dont render in BPR i render in a real time renderer like marmoset. I do have tutorials for hair with blender that is in the same fashion. It goes over creating the maps and rendering in marmoset in the end.

@HiredGunGames

no you can also do this in any Zbrush that has the Gizmo tools. but as far as i know Zbrush 2021 only has the option to split by polygroup borders

Damn... This is pretty damn smart. "Work smarter, not harder," right? I've been looking for "easy" ways to make hair for a long, long time. I ended up picking up a Blender add-on for it that I really like. But this looks like a really good method, as well, and I'll have to give it a go sometime. Now if only I could find some "easy" ways to make anime-style hair rather than plane/card hair.. lol
@pyrotechnicstars
@pyrotechnicstars 3 жыл бұрын
Amazing tutorial. One issue I tend to have is with the scalp when I'm placing hair like this. There's often gaps between the planes that are a pain to tidy up. How would you approach that? I'd pay to watch you recreate a stylized hair from start to finish.
@HiredGunGames
@HiredGunGames 3 жыл бұрын
one thing that helps is to never keep the planes flat. always have different angles to help hide the gaps. that's why I initially use a tube cause it has a natural slope that makes it easier to hide gaps without having too much intersection. it also helps with building out volume. once the tubes are placed you can then split them by polygroups and make them more "messy" and natural looking
@pyrotechnicstars
@pyrotechnicstars 3 жыл бұрын
@@HiredGunGames Awesome advice, thank you so much for the detailed response! In particular, keeping the planes tidy and aligned where the hair "parts" seems to be difficult. I usually try to simply snap the verts together, but when you have a lot of hair cards, this becomes a pain if they aren't aligned, and I often have to deal with ugly, messy looking clipping where the hair meets at the top of the scalp. Have you ever had to deal with this sort of issue before?

How to import this hair into another program for render? Will I need to customize the material somehow?
@HiredGunGames
@HiredGunGames 3 жыл бұрын
well this is typically game hair so you would need to apply the proper game alpha masking materials with the mask texture in the opacity texture portion of the material. use a hair shader material and plug all the textures in.

Can i move hairstrands with transpose cloth tool ?
@HiredGunGames
@HiredGunGames 3 жыл бұрын
yeah but unfortunately it might get weird with the collisions on other strands. you could polygroups the base of the strips and run a simulation bit old how that will end up
@GameArtsCafe
@GameArtsCafe 6 ай бұрын
For game ready hair using physics, it's best not to add additional geo because soft cloth does it automatically. Soft cloth also benefits displacement maps -so you can shape and lengthen your hair with subdivisions then bake it out. Great tutorial otherwise.

Is there any advantages of this method over fibermesh? I mean in an in game perspective, i'm a beginner so I'm kinda in doubt on what method is better to use :/
@HiredGunGames
@HiredGunGames 3 жыл бұрын
well fiber mesh has too much geo to calculate. pcs need to calculate each vertex position in 3d space which leads your pcs being strained. with geo like this it's much less costly to compute the vertex position because there are less vertex. if you're doing a still render then it's fine to use fiber mesh. but this method is better for real time. even animations in Japan use this method rather than the groom method in some of their animations because it's easier to rig, animate and control.

hi, why are you using zbrush for this? i dont see you using any z brush tools that dont already exist in stuff like maya and i would guess modo, surely it would be easier to do this in your modelling program? i mean without using zbrush this is just basically the normal way to make game rez hair?
@HiredGunGames
@HiredGunGames 3 жыл бұрын
hi, some people dont really like to switch programs too often. this is just a video for those who are looking at alternative ways to acheive certain things in different programs. Its more of a tutorial to learn Zbrush in an interesting way that hasnt been seen before to help you focus on using the tools in zbrush and understanding how they work and what they do. In no way should anyone use this for studio workflows as the workflow is drastically longer than using modeling software.
