I've met some wonderful employees at gamestop. One time I went to a gamestop recently casually looking for pokemon plushes. One of the employees noticed that I was buying a totodile plush that was heavily discounted, and he was like "hey, do you want another one? We really want to get rid of it, so it'll literally cost you only 2 cents," and it was a chikorita, and I was trying to complete my Johto starters so I was like hell yeah dude, and he brought it out from the back of the store for me. There was another gamestop employee that literally got me into Persona and SMT. I went to a gamestop a while back to stock up on some nostalgic RPGs for me (FFIII on the DS, Rogue Galaxy, Radiata Stories, etc.). I asked the employee if they had any of the games I listed and he said no. As I was about to walk away though, the guy said "c'mere. I got some games I know you'll like," and he brought me over to the ps2 games where he had SMT Nocturne and Persona 4, two of my now all-time favorite games ever. I never saw that employee again after that...which was a shame cause that man was a goddamn salesman. I bet he got fired cause he didn't shove preorders down your throat, but who the fuck cares about that when he knows how to sell franchises to people that they may not know about. THAT'S a true game store salesperson.

I stuck around because it was generally easy work, flexible, was something I was interested in, and whenever I moved to a new area, I had the experience necessary to get right in. The store I worked at was actually the home base for the guy that’s actually the VP of stores now. Anyway, all the gripes and all the counter points to the gripes are all spot on. My store try to minimize the bullshit by encouraging donations of games that weren’t pulling that much in credit, we’d NEVER sticker box art, instead we’d tear the sticker off with the back still on, and close it in the plastic covering. That way, whenever you bought it, you just opened the game up, lifted the plastic, boom, no stickers. We also FIERCELY stuck to our guns with the 48 hour reserve window on new games. If you pre-ordered a game at our store, we had your copy for 48 hours regardless of corporate telling us to sell through our stock.

I used to work at Gamestop, was there for about a year and left about two months ago. I'm glad you aren't one of the people who like to crucify the employees about pushing things when it isn't really their choice. I'm not going to say Gamestop is this evil corporation like a lot of ex-employees do, but it's just not the store I want to be in that I grew up loving. You really hit the nail on the head with this video, there's huge pressure on sales numbers and preorder goals to the point that Gamestop has become a laughing stock for being so aggressive to people who really just want to buy a game and get out, and there aren't even incentives to get good sales numbers, it's just expected that they're good or you're fired. One day while our District Manager was in our store for a visit, he wrote me up for not approaching customers on the sales floor with the tablet to ask for their phone number to look up their rewards account. After about a year of being in a management position there, I was getting paid 8.50 an hour, often being forced to work over 40 hours a week, and the pressure to have good numbers was always prevalent. I ended up putting in my two weeks because it just wasn't worth the stress anymore. Tl;dr - Go easy on GS employees, they're likely exhausted and definitely underpaid. Also, you'd be surprised at the number of collectibles they sell. It is by far their highest profit margin.

I actually had a pretty memorable experience at game stop once. Me and my friend went there to browse and we saw a couple Nintendo puppets (link, Mario, peach, toad and donkey Kong). We started to play with them for some reason until one of the employees walked over and said “hey you can’t play with those!” And just when I though we were gonna get in trouble he said “without me” and pulled out a toad puppet. So me and my friend played with the puppets with the employee for a bit while also laughing out asses off.

Hey, i really appreciate that message about supporting mom n' pop game shops. I grew up with a dad that owned a game store, but gamestop moved in and despite having a smaller selection, a worse location, and rude employees, they eventually just caused us to shut down. This was mostly in part because the manager at the gamestop kept telling people we were shutting down, and offered them memberships. I remember going to school each day and kids would ask me why we shut our store down, when we didn't. Well, up until we had no choice due to the economic recession of 2008 on top of the local scumbag gamestop manager. Sometimes i feel like people to open their eyes and stop feeding into corporations, and focus on what would help the community owned shops. In most cases, doing that would also be very beneficial to yourself.

I started working at Gamestop back in August of last year and just got back to rewatching this episode, but holy shit he hits the nail on the head. Gamestop has it where your store's performance and employee performance is reliant on preorders, pro memberships, and warranties on hardware or games. It's literally shoved down the employees' throats so they can puke it back down yours. I hate it with a passion. I firmly believe the stuff can be beneficial, but c'mon, it's not like everyone wants the prostate exam of retail.

Trust me, as someone who worked at a certain toy story that died recently, it's just as awkward for the employee. And my store (possibly others do this too) make it so turning the key and opening the case is actually quite difficult, you have to apply pressure on the glass case as you turn a key a specific way, and you actually have three keys that look pretty similar and only one works for game cases so I'm usually struggling for a minute and two as I feel like I might be silently judged by this customer likely thinking, "geez, you have trouble with the simple task of using a key?"

In the defense of EB Games/GameStop, I can sort of see why they're doing this. It used to be that, if you wanted to buy a game, your only option was to buy a physical copy from a traditional brick-and-mortar store. But these days, that's just not the case anymore. Online distribution systems have exploded in popularity, and physical stores just can't compete. This is an especially big problem for a company like GameStop, who by and large used to ONLY sell games, consoles and accessories. They know they can't compete on that front, so they've merged with various other merch companies like Think Geek and rebranded themselves into this "all things geek" store in an attempt to pull in new types of customers. And believe me, there are some insanely obsessive Funko collectors out there.

Surely if they would have just realised quicker instead of being stubborn jerks they would still be around. I feel like since the 90s this was always going to be the future. So if I a then ten year old kid saw it how do these shortsighted fools not? Beggars belief.
@charlescampuz58126 жыл бұрын
Nah it’s a little deeper than that. People still enjoy Physical copies now, it’s just that thanks to Online stores, you could just order the game online and it’ll ship to your door. Thankfully most major retailers caught up to this and incorporate it to their websites but game-centric stores like GameStop needs way more than that to make it.

They call that "gutting" the game. Gamestop gets 10 copies of game "A". 9 copies get locked up in a drawer, and 1 copy is opened to remove the disk and anything else inside. They put the gutted case on the shelf as the display case. If that gutted case is the last copy available, they will grab the envelope with the disk and stuff and put it in the case. Then they put 2 big ass tamper evident stickers to seal the already opened game to signify that it is new. If you buy that game and remove the horrible stickers that makes the game non-refundable because "it was opened after it was purchased." For the most part I love Gamestop, but the practice of gutting games is straight up fraud. I will NEVER buy an opened game as new. There have been times that the only copy available was a gutted game and I had to tell them that they lost a sale. This is a corporate policy, and the employees do whet they are told. Including the pushy sales tactics. If they aren't pushing products and services they could be fired.

Scott I love you. This is easily my favorite out of all your videos. I used to work at Rhino Video Games, which was a great place for retro games. When all our stores were sold to GameStop it was this awful cultural shift. Being the assistant manager at GameStop is the worst job I have ever had, and my first job involved digging ditches.

Actual conversation I had with a GS employee months ago: Dude: “Hey are you looking for anything in particular?” Me: “No just looking for something to play before Kingdom Hearts 3 releases.” Dude: “Kingdom Hearts 3? Why don’t you play a real game like Red Dead Redemption 2?” Me: “Uhhhh I didn’t come to a game store to get judged over a game but alright.”

I really wanted a Nintendo Switch back in 2017 and I asked my parents for it and they said okay. They came home with a PS4 and some games. I said that was nice but no offense I wanted a Nintendo Switch and I have an Xbox and no interest in PlayStation until the next generation of consoles, so I asked them why they got something more expensive. Turns out a fucking gamestop employee talked them out of it telling them how bad it is, etc.

I remember a year or two ago there was a game store called “Revolution”. I was invited to a birthday party when I was 13, and it was really neat. It had hourly rentals, so ypu could rent out the place for around 15$ an hour. They had Wii Us, Xbox ones, PS4s, you name it. They also sold a lot of SNES and N64 titles, and controllers as well. The employees were nice too. I was wondering what happened to the store about a month ago, so I asked my dad if he could drive me there over the weekend. When we drove there, it was shut down and out of business. It sucks because the store was perfect. But now it’s gone.

I had the exact same experience as you. The place I went to was called "Dvd" Avenue and it was just as similar as Revolution except that they were more on the competitive community which was fun to watch. It closed down last year sadly, but I still keep in contact with the owner. Good times

Always had great experiences at my local GameStops regardless of where I lived. The employees there are actually interested in video games, are nice to talk to, and gave me honest opinions. It also allowed me to buy used games very cheap, often using the buy-2-get-1 offer, and get into the Xbox 360 late in the console’s lifecycle with great games at low prices. I also loved Game Informer. It’s because of that magazine that I read about Darksiders II, then bought Darksiders for $17 (preowned) in preparation for Darksiders II, and fell in love with the series. At this point in my life, however, I love the convenience of digital games so my relationship with GameStop is all but dead. Oh, and I also hated those ******* stickers on NEW games!

You also have to realize is that not all used games sell. Yes they pay 22 for Spiderman and 55 to sell. That's a 33$ profit right? The big killer is game price degredation. Games constantly drop in value. Some used games are bought at 22 and never resold until they are in 5.99 bin. GameStop isn't raining in money, that's why they are constantly shifting store focus. If they offered you 40 for a 55 resell they would have to guarantee that copy sells before the value goes down. And that's only a few months at best.
@Gebdoe6 жыл бұрын

@jjmcn83776 жыл бұрын
Basic supply and demand. That store probably has tons of copies of Golden Eye, so therefore they pay less money on that game for trade ins because they don't really need it. They'll still sell it for a high price likely because either it's the current market price of the game, or the developers want it sold at that price.
