In a battle of nerves, two cars are accelerating toward each other form opposite ends of the same road. If one of them doesn't swerve, they will crash. What is the Nash equilibirum of this game? That is, how do the actors rationally respond to such a scenario?

Thanks very much for this clear explanation of Chicken, William! I'm studying international security and am currently writing an assignment that tries to explain North Korea's belligerent and 'irrational' behaviour. I think that Chicken might be helpful in this!

That's setting player 2's expected utility for keep going equal to her expected utility for swerving. This is the indifference condition that I mention in the ten seconds or so beforehand.

hi, i haven't studied any of this, so maybe i am an idiot. but it 'seems' to me there is a much better way of explaining this. so as a start, if you 1st look at it as it's 50/50 what the other person will do. then ur avg of points when u keep going is (-100+2)/2=-49 and ur avg points if u swerve would be (-2+0)/2=-1... in which case -1 is much better than -49, so u should always swerve. then u can change around the chances of their decisions to figure out when its worth it to keep going.

No, just about all of the old videos have a corresponding video in the new series. The difference is that the new series is cleaner and more streamlined.

If you're liking these videos, I'd suggest going to my channel and watching the most recent version of the course. It's a bit more consistent and has much better audio.

Sometimes it happens in life, when you are going on a narrow road or path, and in order to pass through you swerve but other person swerves in the same direction, and then you simultaneously swerve to another direction... :D There should be a method of communicating your intended direction of swerve before hand. :D

Is the Nash Equilibrium then (1/50, 1/50) or is it (swerve, swerve) ?

Well, this is the case if you are assuming they both are dumb. If you start at the situation where player one swerves and player two does not, you assume they stay where they are. However if player one is smart and has balls he goes back to both going straight, knowing that player two now will have two swerve. In reality, when they both have huge ego's, this will lead to a crash.

But the penalty you set for both going straight is arbitrary. The higher you set it the less likey it is to use keep going as a strategy....

On second thought it is all a matter of risk. If they think the other player is dumb/a coward, they will not swerve. Otherwise they will.
