Starcraft's Zerg - some of the most iconic, yet misunderstood aliens in all of Sci-Fi history. We tend to despise these locusts of mass obedience - viewing them as a plague upon our individual freedoms. But what if I were to tell you we have more in common with that swarm than you even realize? Get ready to view the Zerg in a whole new light!

In defense of 6:22, it was more about swapping out the bees for in-game images rather than classifying the units by function. I didn't even think of separating them out by role in the game -- it was more just to draw a visual comparison. My bad!

If you describe the internet as the Hive Mind, then we are better represented by the Protoss than the Zerg. The Protoss had this thing called the Khala. The Khala allowed them to share emotions, thoughts, memories, and information, much like the internet, but each one was Truly an individual like we are. 2 Protoss could still have arguments, but could also share their feelings and thoughts at the same time. The Heierarchs could guide their race and make the decisions, and the others would receive these decisions and make them (as shown in the game, nearly unquestionably). The zerg are the opposite. The Overmind Stole their free will, they are a true hive mind. Their individuality is permanently gone, and when they loose their leader, they go rouge and even change sides without hesitation when a new leader takes over. The original Primal Zerg had Terran level intelligence which could grow as they evolved, once a Zerg looses its connection to its Leaders, it shows no individuality, and is completely lost. A Hive Zerg can never again become a Primal Zerg.

i feel like we are more zerg like in the fact that the more people that hate/like something on the Internet there will be even more people who jump onto the side of popular opinion. what i mean by that is there are a portion of people who only like/dislike things because it is what the majority of others believe.

He is already willing to die so that people he cares for are ok. As for criminals,noot exactly brainwashing,firebat is still the mad pyromaniac,he just burns zerg now. Ok there is some brainwashing,only to make sure he burns only the zerg. As for the dominion,they still do these stuff the most of the time,and when they fight Raynor's raiders,they fight criminals (cause they are criminals,no matter if they do the right or bad thing,they are)

theres a difference between hive mind and herd mentality. humans have a herd mentality. we arent as individual as everyone thinks we are. this isnt to say that some people break from the herd, but theyre generally classed as weird or insane...further proving the theory of herd mentality.
@madnessguy010101
@madnessguy010101 7 жыл бұрын
Anthony Bruno Your point is very true but humans actually posses elements of both. While humans are greatly influenced by the actions of their peers, we also construct advanced bureaucracies and instinctively look up to leader figures, and as time goes on we specialize in different fields of work, one of the deciding factors of which is the wage provided, which in turn is decided by overall demand for that service , all of which is more in line with swarm intelligence

You got the lore wrong. *Spoilers* The xel naga didn't find the zerg, they created the zerg and protoss to be the two races that will ascend and continue the infinite cycle. The zerg with purity or essence and the Protoss with purity of form. Amon, an evil xel naga who wanted to end the infinite cycle and rule the universe with his zerg/protoss hybrid creations, corrupted the zerg and gave them the hive mind to do his bidding. The overmind realized this (future vision or something) and didn't really want the zerg to be amon's slaves. Though being under amon's control the overmind could not disobey him, so he created the queen of blades to free the zerg and defeat amon.

2 years after the release of LoTV, I would like to suggest that the internet is a closer to a sort of ghetto Khala, allowing us to share emotions and experience with others in near-realtime. While it is not as high-resolution as the Protoss's Khala, it nevertheless serves the exact same function. I remember a line in LotV where a Protoss preserver slashed off her nerve cord. When a DT asked what it felt like to not have the Khala, she characterized it as feeling _"like the world has been dulled... and yet, it has also become more clear, more immediate. I feel as if I am a child again."_ And then one time I went into the bathroom without my phone. In my boredom, this thought came to me, and then I realized that I felt much the same way as the Preserver, severed from my phone. As Phase Smith Karax puts it, I felt cut off from the world, "unable to reach out to the surety of others."

There's still one issue: Stragglers. The Zerg are entirely obedient to the Overmind, but many humans aren't always obedient to the recommendation column. People deny facts constantly, hate some internet trends, and argue constantly. The internet being shown as a hive mind has one, singular issue: Not everyone is obedient to what the internet has to say.

But what if this super company that controls the Internet also controls food, housing, and every essential of life. Let's say that Google buys McDonald's and gives free McDonald's coupons to google users. Then those who avoid the Internet have to pay more for food and overtime, it will make a large difference. Business is the true ruler of the world. Not religion or governments but businesses.

You are thinking of collective intelligence, Matpat are using swarm intelligence. Collective intelligence is a shared or group intelligence that emerges from collaboration, collective effort, and competition of many individuals and appears In consensus decisions making. The term appears in sociobiology, political science and in context of mass peer review and crowdsourcing applications. It may involve consensus, social capital and formalism such as voting systems, social media and other means to quantifying mass activity while swarms intelligence is the collective behavior of decentralized, self organized systems, natural or artificial. The concept is employed in work on artificial intelligence.

There are exceptions my dear matpat. Exceptions such as myself. True, the internet is a hive mind, but unlike the zerg we have a CHOICE. I could, (and I have done so before) quit the internet for as long as I wished, sticking to books, friends, and my watch for everything the internet provides. The zerg do not necessarily have a choice. They are linked from birth. I only hope that we do not go that far.

But you wouldn't. In fact, some would argue that if you did, all it would do would stop you in your biological quest of gene survival. If you found a partner then reproduce, odds are your subset society would eventually be overwhelmed by the rest of humanity. As your little group may grow by a dozen a year, millions more are born wanting what everyone else wants: to be accepted by others and follow the ultimate goals of humanity. I mean even later in life, you may swear allegiance to a corporation to work for that competes to be the most accepted, to draw onto someone's Bing point earlier, Google is a dominant force in search filters and advertising. The android phone I'm using was well rated and I picked it be cause MKBHD said to. Some people swear by Chevrolet cars, so you rate them to be the best cars you've ever driven, imagine if EVERYONE drove a chevy? That's what GM wants! And so they pay for advertising on google, they advertise during the NFL's super bowl (which both are dominating their respective businesses). Even language man! The books you'd be reading??? All written in a standardized form of English, when before the 20th century, no one cared about spelling, so communication was more difficult! Spelling bee's, English tests, all started so we could assimilate the language to be easily understood by more people. My God, man. It's all very clear that whatever choice we have, it's all very influenced by the generation before............

Well the Xel'naga never found the Zerg, they created the Zerg just like they created the Protos and just like they created other races across all galaxies. Amon ( A rogue Xel'naga) corrupted the Zerg so they would be controlled by the Overmind wich was directly under his command, than he used the Swarm to attack the other Xel'naga but he died with all of the Xel'naga therefore geting sent into The Void. But before dieing he gave the Zerg overmind one last command: Kill the Protoss. You can play the games to learn the rest of the story.
@TankHunter678
@TankHunter678 3 жыл бұрын
@Hayden Harpe It was stated in the games that the Xel'naga in their pursuit of perfection would regularly seed new races across multiple universes. Both the protoss and zerg were seeded by them, only for them to later be modified by Amon since the Xel'naga would normally play hands off wait and see and Amon desired to do things differently. You should go replay the Starcraft 2 Zerg and Protoss campaigns.

I agree with almost everything. However, though the Net acts as a hive mind for us, you as the individual chose the content subject and then whatever you're using (KZbin, Tumblr, Google, etc.) filters for the most relevant. If I don't want to watch video X, even though let's say everyone else does, I will not get it on my feed because I chose not to have it there. With a hive mind, it forces even those who disagreed to consume/do whatever was chosen.
@GameTheory
@GameTheory 8 жыл бұрын
+IceQueen975 But think about it...if you're not on Page 1 of Search Results on Google, for example, 90% of people won't see your page. It's like on KZbin -- certain videos get put in your face more often and longer than others. The ones that MORE people watch get surfaced higher to you. Yes, you can choose to watch something else, but it's getting harder and harder to discover those OTHER choices. As a result, I have less of a choice. I let the SYSTEM do the choosing for me. Just a thought on where things are headed :)

You'll probably start doubting yourself and people will try to compel you to follow the "common sense". Yes, we are very hive minded, that's why we have governments, laws and religions. We give our freedom in the hands of those who can conquer our trust.

We haven't reach the point the Zerg has. Google and all those doesn't force us what it wants us to do, just giving recommendations. Maybe in the future we would choose for it to dictate for us so that we as a race could arrive at better, more calculated solutions. It works.

+Spectral Ninja I certainly don't disagree, but whereas bees get s pheromone message and immediately respond in kind, if I read an article on terrorism, I might decide to enlist in the military, and if you read the same article, you might decide to research the history of radical groups, just as an example. Thus, there is no hive mind because the freedom of CHOICE for each individual is maintained. We might get similar or even the same info, but we all apply it differently.

+Destroyer831642 To some extent,yes.The big difference is that when the government makes a decision,it leaves the group two big choices:they accept the decision or change the algorithm.Due to the fact that the group and the hivemind don't evolve homogenously(generally the group is the faster one but it can go both ways),the group makes an everchanging idealiasation of the hivemind should be like based upon the previous decisions made by the hivemind that the collective has accepted(this is a contextual definition of group mentality).If the current hivemind doesn't make the same decision as the ideal one would,then it's changed for one that tries to specifically fix the flaws of the recently replaced,drawing inspiration from previous hiveminds that were as different as possible from the most recent.

@danielpetrov1369
@danielpetrov1369 8 жыл бұрын
So! The Xel'Naga created the protoss and Amon(breaking their sacred law) helped them evolve but then the protoss rebelled against the Xel'Naga and many of them were killed while abandoning Aiur (the homeworld of the protoss) later Amon and his "evil" Xel'Naga found Zerus, the home of the primal zerg, Amon wanted to make them a weapon of war so he created the Overmind, a creature that dominated all the Zerg that were givien a psionic link. Some of the primal Zerg escaped Amons control. Later the "good" Xel'Naga, became aware of Amon's plan and fought him, Amon unleashed the swarm and destroyed almost all the Xel'Naga, the rest ended up killing him and most of his followers(except Narud). So MatPat is wrong, the Xel'Naga never intended to merge the Zerg and the Protoss, Amon's Xel'naga wanted to do that to create a powerful hybrid army to end the infinite cycle (and later to create a new body for Amon). If you don't believe me check the starcraft wiki for yourselves. I was hoping MatPat would do more research before saying things like that.
@mgalds1427
@mgalds1427 7 жыл бұрын
+Demon Athenos and that's where you are wrong. the xel'naga intended the protoss and the zerg to merge, but it would be in a pacific way over the millenia. Amon's plan was to stop the infinite cycle by making the protoss and the zerg kill each other, and using the hybrids to destroy the galaxy. "The xel'naga arose within the Void.[1] While incredibly long lived by even protoss standards, the xel'naga were not immortal. Eventually, their species would come to an end. In the interest of survival they planned to create new xel'naga by uplifting two species. A pair of qualities was required and these were defined by the xel'naga as purity of essence and purity of form, and each uplifted species would be targeted for one of them. Over an extraordinarily long period of time, the two species would naturally come together and merge, forming the next generation of xel'naga and beginning the cycle anew.[2] The cycle was repeated in numerous universes; at the start of a universe's creation, the xel'naga would take on physical form and enter the universe, seeding it with life. The cycle repeated so many times that time itself was affected by it.[3] Each time, the xel'naga observed and identified the potential of their offspring, but never interfered directly.[1]"

(13:35) I don't disagree with the video as a whole, but you made that kind of mistake again. You said an overlord in a hive mind chooses the best decision for all memebers to do; then you say that the companies on the internet chooses the best decision for each and every individual, independent of each individual. - Those are two completely different things. - In the example of takeout or leftovers; the internet companies would give takeout to those who wants takeout, and leftovers to those who wants leftovers. But the overlord in the hivemind would choose takeout _or_ leftovers for _all_ members, depending on which is the best option.

One interesting thing you didn't mention in this video is the fact that humans are the only mammals, and one of very few species in general that exhibit altruistic tendencies. Most other creatures aren't concerned with the survival of the group, but rather just the preservation of their own genes. They'll do everything in their power to help themselves and their offspring, but when it comes to assisting the other members of their species they don't. Insects, and other creatures with a hive mind, however, including humans, do help each other out. Oftentimes even sacrificing themselves if it's in the best interest of the group. Just one more interesting parallel between us and the zerg.

Not in our age though. As much as i hate social experiments, they showed that we wouldn't help someome in need if we were in a crowd. Guess what, we are in a crowd all the time, when we walk around the city, if you were to feel sick and fall to the ground, very VERY few people would actually help you. The reason being, we don't want to come out of the "group" that forms in the streets. We feel weird, we don't want to stand out. Even if it means saving a life.

***** it's not necessarily the fact that we still have wars and fights, we could keep them just for fun, you know, sparring. But the sign that we didn't evolve to the point of not being animals, is the fact that we still base EVERYTHING around the power and brute force system. We all like to say that we evolved at a ridiculous speed especially in the last twenty years, but it really isn't true, technology evolved, our bodies evolved, but we didn't. Allow me to provide proof. How do we administrate states? We give ALL the power to a single person (the president of the USA, or the queen) or to a group of people (parliaments and representative governments like Italy), because not everyone can bear a country on their shoulders. Or can we? Everyday of our lives we carry out our countries, we just don't want to be aware of it, we don't want worries, so what better way to get rid of them than to toss them all at someone else? So who has the power in a democracy, the people or who gets elected? We still rely on the law of the strongest, and once we give power, of course who has it will want to keep it. If the president says, no more healthy food, everything will become McDonald's! We COULD (i say could because literally everyone and their grandmother eats at McDonald's, at least where i live, and my knowledge about America says that more McDonald's just equals more fat people) cause a riot, but the president has a personal armed escort, and he can call the police and give orders to take down the mobs. Do you want to become a game designer? Nope! You have to know someone in the industry who has a good position! Do you want to become an actor? Nope! You have to know someone in the industry who is very well known! Who owns companies? Who owns the moon, though? The people? The government? Well, actually, the first person to set foot would. But as more people were to come, the strongest would obtain priority over the others. We need a Utopia, but as we know, only the extremely intelligent and wise would be able to live there.

For the end card question, I think the internet is more good than bad for us. Not just the hive mind aspect of it, but the prospect of transmitting different forms of information contributes to humanity's transcendence. We're able to know something that happens across the globe in the blink of an eye, we're able to communicate with practically anyone anywhere, and with the boon in VR technology, we're working towards the prospect of *being* anywhere and everywhere we desire.

Thing about comparing the Zerg hive mind to the internet is that we can still make decisions, while the Zerg cannot. When an order is given to the Zerg, they do it no matter what, they blindly follow orders. As humans we can decide whether or not to follow an order or in this case, whether we agree or do what is most popular on the internet. Why do you think the comments section on nearly everything is nothing but flame wars? Because people have differing opinions. Zerg cannot have opinions while under the influence of the Overlord, while humans still can and do.
@Kreed360

+Mr. Person Are you certain you have the ability to make your own decisions, I mean, the possibility that you can take another choice is there, but once you make a choice, you've made it, you didn't choose anything else, so in the end you've technically always chosen the choice you were going to choose because it's the choice you were going to choose, which means there was never any choice at all. Free will and all that.

We half blindly follow orders. Thats the differance. And most of us has will of a cockroach.

Derek360 Ok, since this is a gaming channel, how about this. The internet (or the hive) says that COD is amazing because of how popular it is and how many people play it, but I hate COD. If we were a hive mind we would ALL love COD with no choice in the matter. Or how those minion pics with "Funny" quotes are rediculously popular and yet I find them annoying. If we were a hive mind I would have no choice and HAVE to like them. That is the difference. Also to the 2nd comment, the fact that a lot of people go with whatever is popular does not matter when some of us do not. a hive mind means everyone does the same thing with no choice in the matter, not just the majority
@enfercesttout
@enfercesttout 8 жыл бұрын
The absract consciousness which knew what i was going to do hundred percent every time must be all-knowing. Which turns into a paradox itself. Since even i might not know what about my future choices are, there's always a point of emptiness where subject of conscious should be. That's the part which condems us to be free.
@MrVoldi7
@MrVoldi7 8 жыл бұрын
+Mr. Person I agree with you 100%. I'd like to add a few practical examples so others can see. First of all Arts if everyone was connected to the hive mind nobody would be able to create something new and CREATIVE. Since we all receive the same information and we are connected to this hive no one would be able to think a outside of the box or something that represents him better such as a song they wrote a drawing or anything else. Second, we don't blindly follow instructions sometimes we are willing to choose something that pleases us more instead of the optimal thus disagreeing with orders of a certain algorithm.There are more examples like the ones. Even though i agree with you there is this concept of the ''invisible hand'' guiding us it's a theory in Economics which says the same as the video more or less. I don't fully support that theory but it has some strong points about this argument.

You seem to forget about the Cerebrates. Zerg don't have one single shared mind, there are many minds, led by the Overmind, but each one of the Cerebrates has an intelligent human-level mind: remember, in the Zerg campaing YOU ARE a cerebrate, and lead your brood. ...But I know that's beside the point. And I believe this theory doesn't make much sense either way. I mean it's cool to think about the internet as a hive mind, but what does it have to do with Zerg specifically? It's forced. This is not a game theory, it's an evolutionary theory, and then you make a reference to SC. It's like talking about mining, and having a theory about mining, but then saying it's a Minecraft theory for no particular reason.
