I was a student at LSU during the Maravich era, and he would put on a pre-game skills show that was very impressive. When Tennessee came to town, they countered with a little guard who could do a few tricks. Difference was, that Pete used all the skills during the game. I don't know if Tennessee's little dribbler actually played more than a minute or two. Tennessee had some great guards, though. They ran a box and one and held Pete to about half his average. However, the games were dire--Mears played a very conservative defensive style. There was no shot clock or 3-point line in those days.
@DanielBarberMusicАй бұрын
Must've been incredible to see Pete in person. I think he's the most talented player we've still ever seen. Could do anything with the ball in the midst of any situation and it's been estimated he'd have averaged.. AVERAGED in the 50s if he gotten 3 points for his 3-point distance shots. And he was a helluva passer, too.

This is a great video. Why don't NBA teams do this? 1) the players would complain, refuse to participate and most players would probably lack the conditioning to both complete this W/U and play a competitive game. 2) With the NBA's 82 game schedule and potentially another 20+ games for playoffs, the fatigue would result in even more injuries and shortened careers. On the college level 30-40 games a season (including playoffs) this is possible if players would cooperate.
