One of the things that always bugged me about the literal fallout of this issue is how quickly Robotropolis getting nuked became inconsequential. Sonic and Tails were roboticized, becoming Mecha Sonic and Mecha Tails, and Robo-Robotnik and Snively were deroboticized (as Snively was recently roboticized by Robo-Robotnik). Even more, I'm pretty sure that in one of the latest comics, near the end of the series, she actually opted to get deroboticized. And if my memory doesn't fail me, she not being there to help is the reason Antoine himself has to jump in the middle of a suicide bomber metal sonic in order to protect the royal family. The reason Bunnie never got de-botted is likely because she's a far more effective fighter as a cyborg. Deroboticizing her would effectively render her no longer capable of being a freedom fighter. I like how with the designs of each Sonic character-themed robot, it makes most of them easy to distinguish, even if the comics retconned and mis-named different ones: This is how I've tried to organize them. (It's not perfect, but it's something.) Metal Series (Metal Sonic from Sonic CD, Metal Knuckles from Sonic R, Metal Tails from the Archie Comics, etc..) = Sleek, powerful, fits as a "metal-focused" version of a character. Mecha Series (The ones seen in this comic an Mecha Sally as seen in later comics. Probably also Metal Sonic from S3&K.) = Big, bulky, and blocky. Fit as a stylized version of the original character, but as if they were wearing a robotic suit of armor. Prototype/Early/Varied/Mixture Series (Tails Doll? Game Gear Silver Sonic & Sonic 2 Silver Sonic?) = Everything else. There's others that I'm probably missing, but most are either prototypes or a variation of a series that could fit in somewhere.

Mecha Madness is notable for being where the Comic really starts coming together. Consider that originally, Issue 50 was supposed to be the grand finale, and we're rapidly approaching that. So it's time for everything to get serious. Endgame drops in only 6 short issues later, and that alone was a trip. Here, we get the beginning of this by Mecha Sonic's first action being brutally ripping apart comic relief Crabmeat, a way to show the readers "No, we're not screwing around here". Of course, you can also see all the crazy jokes the early Comic was infamous for. This is a great transitory point. Especially when Bunnie says "The South Shall Rise Again!" and when Rotor says that "This is the Battle of the SEGA Century". It's just pure 90s consolidated into one spot, both dark action and pure comedy that's so ridiculous it's hilarious. SsethTzeentch once said in his Morrowind Review that "When everything is out of place, nothing is" and I feel that really describes Sonic as a whole. Cyborg Nazi Echidnas? Orbital space colonies with genetically engineered monster lizards? Battling a mass of pure evil in the Earth's Core with a Megazord made of temples? A giant purple cat voiced by the same guy who voiced Duke Nukem? All of them are insane, but together they fit Sonic perfectly. I honestly kind of miss this sort of thing, where you'd have all these wacky elements that managed to work in near perfect harmony. I don't really see it around as much anymore nowadays. Probably why I had such a blast reading some TMNT comics. Anyway, glad to see the video.

Its great stuff. Sonic's wild nature is underrated way too often, even in the eyes of the fandom. People focus on the simple "Sonic saves animals and fights Eggman piloting mechas" way too much. Sonic used to represent just pure adventure... not the garbage like Forces and the Boom games.

You know, there are day when I just LOVE how this series mixes fun humor and some good serious moments. I guess in a way you could almost say it feels like a mix of Silver Age and dark age astetics mixed with some good old fanshion kids stuff. Kind of takes me back to what I hear about how the old Archie Turtles went (Some dark, but light stories as well.) And it is fun without having to think too hard until later, because it knew its audience. Let me put it this way. As a kid, I didn't care about the raditation, blast strength, or whatever of a nuke. I just knew nuke means giant boom and powerful explosion. I didn't think about how there could be any robains left or the recon that was here about Sal and Knux's relationship or the retcons that were soon the come in later comics. I didn't think about the idea of "possible use of robotizer" other than it exsists or even how can Sonic collect 1 billion rings (Seriously, what HAD he been doing in between comics. We know the rings are a one time use for a boost, and somehow he used a billion. Trust me, the numbers don't add up, you can't get 1 billion if you add all of the games together.) just that a Billion was a lot, and it sounds special and cool. Kind of like how a DC comic in the old days could spout giberish and you knew it was wrong, but it was fun and exciting. Hell, I didn't think much about the forgien parts gag or the logic behind it, why? Because it was a classic gag that's been used for years. And yet, these stories still provided a lot of character, great heart, and action in spite of the many MANY stupid moments that come before and later down the line. I guess whatI am saying is thanks for reminding me of what made the comics so special and awesome. Side note: God these comics are reminding me why I love Sally and Bunnie so damn much. Sally, no time for emotions, get in theere and kick ass.
@psyxypher38812 жыл бұрын
I feel the need to point out that since Uncle Chuck designed the Roboticizer, the "Retro-Procedure" was probably a built in system related to how the Deroboticizer function. So it's basically a reversion of the original procedure, and Sonic only survived because of his aura. This was actually a plot point in SatAM I believe, where since Roboticization could be undone, the Freedom Fighters were unwilling to destroy the Robians.

I really hope one day we can get a mecha tails. You mentioned how this version of Mecha Sonic drew a lot of design inspiration from the Mecha Sonic Boss in Sonic & Knuckles, but it's funny that in the comic's universe it was the other way around. In the Death Egg miniseries Robotnik explains how he used saved data from Mecha Sonic's design specs as a base, then pumped it up with super armor to create "Silver Sonic," which was basically the comic's version of the Mecha Sonic boss from Death Egg Zone in Sonic 2, and later on it was upgraded into Silver Sonic Mk2 after the Sonic Adventure adaptation which was supposed to be the comic's version of the Sonic & Knuckles version of Mecha Sonic, so it goes full circle. On a merch note, Jakks Pacific gave us a toy of the Sonic 2 Mecha Sonic which is awesome, but now I hope we get the S&K version too, though as you mentioned a lack of concept art outside of the sprite might make that difficult.

I wish that you did include issue 40, since I always considered it as part of the complete mecha madness story as an epilogue chapter, despite Spaz not providing pencils. I love that it includes Amy, since aside from appearing in a background shot with no dialogue once or twice, this was her first appearance since she was introduced in issue 25. Poor Amy, Penders and the other writers at the time clearly did give a crap about her, and she would not become relevant to the plot of the narrative until the Sonic Adventure adaptation, and we know how awkward that would become.

Man this was so cool, as weird as Archie was this story was awesome. I have a suggestion for another robot for March, might be an obscure one. So growing up in England my school library had these "Sonic the Hedgehog Adventure Gamebooks", basically an RPG in a book. The idea was you'd read a scenario and have a choice to make, and flip to a page that corresponded to the choice. Combat was done with dice rolls like a tabletop RPG. Really it's a whole system that was really fun to read for a middle schooler. There were 6 books total and one of these was about a robot doppelganger of sonic, the book was titled Sonic vs Zonik. That would be a deep dive to look into since I've literally never seen anyone mention the Sonic gamebooks since I was a kid.

I think the "inferior foreign parts" *is* a joke, since back in the 80s Japanese and European car imports were absolute demolishing the American car industry, and a lot of marketing back then and during the early 90s wanted to make the imports sound like cheap Chinese crap, and the only way you would get a good quality automobile was buying true blue _'Murican_ cars. There's a reason why you only hear about Japanese and European cars from that era, by the way.

I like to think that the yellow parts on Mecha Sonic represent all the rings he's collected, and how they've protected him back when he was organic, so now as a robot they've become literal armor.

I hope SEGA makes some new Sonic robots. Metal surely is good but man they already made 3000 Sonic robots another would just be a smart surprise.

Is this the only time Spaz illustrated a whole issue? His art makes the whole thing. Archie's earlier years really prove how important the art is to me since I realise that ALL the memorable stories from then are the very few that used the best artists like Spaz and Axer. For some reason the ones that can't draw sonics do the vast majority of issues

I did really like Mecha Madness, but the ending kind of ruined hit. They didn't even give Sonic a chance to explain what happened. When I heard Mecha Sonic and Mecha Knuckles were going to be in Scrapnik Island, what I want most was for them to fight! Referencing this special! So Happy They Did!

Issue 39 of the Archie Sonic comic is iconic, to this day many people say it is the best issue of the entire comic's run, but the follow ups were weak. Mecha Madness had great artwork yes, but the story was SUPER thin (basically like a schoolyard game of superheroes with kids making up their own super powers) and issue 40 was just...no good, or at least a MASSIVE tone shift... I also gotta mention how much I HATE that portable robotocizer, or at least how it was utilized in the comic. First of all is that they don't even bother to explain why they didn't use it to restore Bunnie, but you brought that up so yeah (a throwaway line about how since her robotocization was interrupted it corrupted the "save file" so it couldn't easily be reversed is all we would need) but really the most notable thing that did was provide a literal SHRINK RAY in the form of its "reduce/enlarge" component which got used in issue 4 by Supersonic to shrink the giant gecko robot and in issue 33 (which I personally believe is the worst in the ENTIRE series run) for Sonic to shrink himself down so he could fantastic voyage himself into Rotor's body to cure the French Fryrus...and that's it, they have a PORTABLE ROBOTOCIZER which can do anything from creating cyborg super soldiers to reverse engineering the process to save their friends and loved ones from mechanized slavery, and it gets brought up all of 4 times, and only 2 of those times for its actual purpose of turning things into robots!

You know I was a little worried when she called the evil robots Yankees but Bunny going full Confederate was a twist I wasn't expecting. Also Knuckles, look man. I get you want everyone to "Buy angel Islandian" but we don't make stuff anymore. Stop watching "Louder with Grounder"
