Retromodding is a 1700 may battery if you were on helders site they got those specs wrong. Also The Clean juice charges way too fast for a Lithium ion battery. Meaing it's going to lose capacity faster, whereas retromodding's battery runs a constant charge rate lower then Helders. The longevity to me means more. If you check out Mahko's video on both of these batteries he goes in depth on capacity discharge rates, recharge times the types of batteries they are and capacity. As well as of key notes, like these are both non replaceable batteries because of the adhesive holding down the thin pcbs. They will break off if you attempt to remove the cell from the board. Heat and a pry tool not really the safest method. And retromodding's battery although not have a jis connecter is not sealed with epoxy but instead liquid rubber coated insulation and can be peeled off. They also have where the battery lead are wired onto the board, a jis soldering point so you can actually solder a jis female on it if you decide to. Making both of them for lack of better terms equally "replacable" but not really replacable.

I think the CleanJuice wins based on the fact you can go back to AA’s without having to put the continuity clip back in. Not having to remove this clip for the install is icing on the cake as removing it feels like mutilation to the Gameboy.

A couple of years back I was given a GBA that someone didn't want and it came with a Logic3 rechargeable battery. Even if I could charge it, I'm almost certain it would be poor in comparison to either of these. I think it was likely produced back when the GBA was still the main handheld by Nintendo.

CleanJuice wins simply for not soldering and epoxying the battery to the board. Also, looks like they've updated the product to include low battery and a charging LED, so the other model has no advantage other than not making you plug in a battery to the board, which is hardly an advantage at all considering how easy it is to do.

I would mod the RetroModding battery by cutting the wires and adding a connector. That way i can replace the battery when/if it dies (probably with one with more capacity) and it already comes with the low battery indicator.

Retrosix has potential BUT they seem to rush releases. CleanAmp needed a "puresilence" upgrade mod, Cleanjuice needs a "low-power" add-on, Dehum/Dehiss kit changed almost at the very first day of release... Don't get me wrong, I mean I see so much potential there but it would be awesome if everything was a complete mod from the beginning and people wouldn't need to solder stuff and then more stuff on stuff etc.

The problem with the SP is that there is very little room to work with. So a drop in kit is very unlikely to ever happen. Some people have removed the stock charging port and installed a USB C port but it is a custom mod.

For my money, as soon as I held the wide grip classic GBA, there was no turning back… in fact, it always seemed to me like the whole point of modding a GBA was to give it features that were standard on the SP.

I agree with just having options for a battery pack is nice, even if both have some cons, or pros. What I want to see is more widely available GBA shell color options from manufacturers. For some reason, solid teal isn't an available option from most sellers, with Retrosix getting that first start with their prestige shells. As far as I know, I looked pretty much everywhere and turned out empty prior to the prestige shells. FunnyPlaying is coming up with their own shells now, and absolutely love them, just their color variety at the moment only ranges on the transparent side. I know they'll be releasing some solid color options and hope they can get every single color available in the spectrum of colors.

I'm a huge fan of options too! I think its never been a better time to be in the modding scene! That's awesome that FunnyPlaying is getting into the aftermarket shell scene, excited to see what they have to offer! I love the RetroSix shell, I havent gotten one yet but they are like the plastic version of Boxy Pixel shells, the come ready to accept IPS screens and aftermarket batteries! Cheer Buddy!

I think there are 2 versions of the CleanJuice battery for the DMG. One is the XL which has a higher capacity. I'm not 100% sure, but I do think it would be slightly lighter than 4 AA batteries. Also, I think that it improves battery life significantly. Cheers!

Just buy a 600mah Lipo cell with built in overcharge/current protection. £5 on ebay. Fits in SP and others. No DS tape required to break PCB. They were a UK company? Insult.

the handheld rechargeable battery mod sucks ass. The thing only lasted a week on my modded gba and last night, i noticed the thing starting to heat up to the point of which i believe to melt the lid cover. After that, it just died. I am upset at the fact that I waited so long to do a modded gba and have the rechargeable battery installed to have this as a result. any other recommendations other than the two mentioned on the video?

How would you compare these to boxypixel 2000 mAh? Also, I understand based on previous tests EZ Flash Omega kills the battery in no time compared to krikzz everdrive-gba x5, why would you recommend it or think is the best GBA flash cart? Great content by the way!

Thanks Freddy! Great question! I think when it comes to cost verse performance the EZ Flash is tough to beat. Krikzz makes the best flash carts hands down with the best customer support but it costs more. The Krikzz carts also do take quite a bit of battery life, not as much as the EZ flash but still a decent amount. I just think in terms of value EZ flash is a great option. Cheers!

Freddy Rojas you won’t be able to use both the retro modding and the HHL solution I’m the boxy pixel shell. The battery and TP4056 charging module are bespoke to the boxy pixel shell. The USB C charging port is off too the side, not centered to where it would be if there was a battery compartment. Simply put, if you’re using a boxy pixel shell you need the TP4056, 3D printed holder, and the diode.

They are very good! I havent done a battery test but they are a larger capacity than the CleanJuice and RM battery. I think it's safe to say you'll get a good amount of playtime with the Boxy Pixel battery.

My advice - don't play with the cable, let it stay connected because it's very fragile and won't come out easily. The battery pack doesn't fit very well and takes few tries until it sticks the right way and doesn't pop out . Also you need back cover with a hole already, otherwise it will not close ! EDIT : I would seriously like to hear a feedback from others who actually bought the battery kit. Just after one minute the battery started rumbling and got swollen

The 2 AA batteries I have in my GBC have a 4,000mah life (which could be used in the GBA as well). I don't really see this mod entirely necessary given that rechargables do a fine job.

While I do basically agree..... different strokes for different folks ya know? Some people may not want to bother with keeping track of a battery charger and the rechargeable batteries. I had them for a while, when I was a teen and got my first cheap CD player. It ate up batteries like crazy. I remember riding to school with the twisted metal 2 PS1 CD in my CD player getting amped up to rob zombie only to be deflated when we finally got to school. At any rate, yeah... I suppose most people would be better off. For about the same cost as one of these mods, you could buy a good eneloop charger setup with a panasonic charger, 12AA, 4AAA, and some C and D adapters. Keep in mind that you can't just compare a battery mAh to mAh. Battery chemistry and how it's being used (namely how hot it gets, and how high the power draw is) can make huge differences in how long a battery lasts even between two different batteries of equal mAh ratings but different battery chemistries

So, I am considering making a GBA with ISP V2 and using a Type C rechargeable battery setup. I will probably drop a new speaker in, but not use an amp package. There are two things I would like to do as well, but haven't decided on doing yet. Installing Red LED lights for the sides with a transparent red button set, in a black case, or transparent black case with red button pads, and only the shoulder buttons lighting up. But if I did the red lights, I would want to possibly replace the regular charge indicator light to be red at full battery, and a blue when low battery, and I don't even know if that is possible?

Sounds like a sweet build! I think it should be possible. I’m not too familiar with changing the battery led indicator, but I think it consists of 2 surface mounted leds, one green and one red. You would have to swap both. Not sure what size smd led you would need though. I hope that helps a little. Best of luck on the build! Cheers!

They are on the pricey side for sure. I do think the features and ease of installation make them a decent value. Having a good set of rechargeable AA batteries is a great alternative. Cheers buddy!

Quality rechargeable AA batteries are a great option! Mine served me well for many years. Still have my 8 year old Eneloops and they seem to still hold a decent charge. Cheers!
