EASIEST way to make the ULTIMATE Gameboy Advance SP! FunnyPlaying IPS Screen and Retro Modding Shell

Retro Renew Episode Description: Step-by-step instructions on how to install a FunnyPlaying IPS kit into a Game Boy Advance SP to build the ULTIMATE handheld console!
In today’s episode of Retro Renew, we’re going to install a FunnyPlaying IPS screen into a Japanese Imported Game Boy Advance SP AGS-001. As you may or may not know, the AGS-001 has a front lit LCD which leaves a lot to be desired. Nintendo later fixed this issue with the release of the AGS-101 model GBA SP. Despite this, sourcing an AGS-101 console or AGS-101 LCD are both expensive endeavors. The IPS kit from FunnyPlaying is a great alternative to the AGS-101. To help with the install, I’ll be using a pre-trimmed GBA SP shell from Retro Modding. I highly recommend using a pre-trimmed shell to do this mod as it will make the whole install significantly easier. So sit back, relax and enjoy the mod!

Just a little tip for those who might not have noticed, when screwing screws into softer plastic, turn the screw the opposite way slightly, you'll hear a slight click if the screw holes have already been threaded. I'm not sure if the RetroModding shell has pre-threaded screw holes, but it's still a good practice just so you don't accidentally wreck the threads.

Exactly! Also makes screwing lids on things easier too. Basically you’re just aligning the threads so you don’t cross-thread and strip the threads.

I just bought a modded GBC with 5 brightness levels and even on the highest setting it stil looks quite dark after I've been playing on my GBA with the V2 IPS, that thing is so bright and sharp to look at!

@@MachoNachoProductions I'm not sure as the bloke I bought it from just said it was a screen from China so it could be anything!...you just tap the IR sensor on the top of the GBC to select but it only looks half as bright as my IPS screen does (but personally I think the IPS screens are too bright anyway on maximum)

I've never had an issue with my sp screen. The front lit screen is plenty bright enough for being outside and you can turn it off while inside with good light conditions. I have steadily been using my original one for over a decade and the screen is one of the only components that hasn't diminished in Quality.

I did this mod on my 001, i have one GBA SP 101 and one 001 and one GBA where the screen had a crack, so i took my original 001 screen and used it in my GBA. and can confirm the IPS screen is has a higher pixel density than the 101 or 001 screen.

This is a great video. It helps go through all the steps for beginners. I have a question. When spray painting the shell how does one prevent it from getting into the speaker holes without using tape

Thanks Logic Crash! I’m glad you found it helpful! When spray painting as long as you do light even coats, you don’t need to worry about covering the speaker holes. They will be perfectly fine. No problem SamuaX! The double sided tape is option but does help with install. You can even use some kapton tape instead of double sided tape as well. The double sided tape I use is 3M Scotch. Hope that helps! Cheers!

I like the hardware of the Nintendo 3DS. I like the software of Swapnote, Flipnote, I like the Korg Synthesizer, I like Rhythm Core Alpha, I don't know Basic Coding, but, I like the idea. What are the chances of ever getting hardware upgrades, to improve load times, and, graphics processing, audio engineering, wi-fi range... what are the chances of getting building an upgraded Nintendo 3DS? It's a really interesting hardware platform, if only it wasn't hindered by all the video-game software.

Great video! I've never soldered anything before but I think this is a perfect one to try with. One question I have is, for the 28 AWG gauge wire, do you have to strip the tip of the wire before soldering it?

Thank you Andres! If I remember correctly the kit came with a wire that was already pre-stripped so you didn't need to do it yourself. My only issue with the wire included was that I thought it was too short and made soldering a little tricky. If you use your own 28 AWG wire you will need to strip it yourself. Idk if it is just my childhood rose tinted glasses getting in the way, but I swear the my GBA SP used to look as good as this mod does, but when I play on it today, it’s a really washed out and dim image. I will definitely be looking into an IPS display mod for my GBA as it is still the best way to play these games for me (my DS Lite has some serious ghosting issues with GBA games)

What do you think about replacing an SP AGS 101 screen with an IPS and then using the 101 screen for an OG gameboy advance? Is this a good upgrade path?

That's awesome! One easy thing you could try is moving the volume slider up and down repeatedly for a little while and see if that solves the issue. A lot of the times, corrosion builds up on the contacts of the slider and causes it to lose its connection. Moving it up and down will remove that corrosion and potentially restore it. It's a long shot but it's easy enough to give it a quick try. Let me know if it works out! Cheers!

When installing an IPS screen, if I were to not connect the wire, how would the screen be affected? Would it stay on the brightest setting or will the backlight not turn on?

I believe it will stay at the default brightness. In my opinion the default brightness is plenty bright. The wire only enables dimming function and is completely optional. I hope this helps! Cheers!

Great video as a new owner of the game boy sp ips screen just wanna ask is it safe to put it in a protective case when not using ? I want to be extra careful because I had no idea the screen is now tempered glass also when I got it it looks on the left bottom corner looks alittle out is that normal or not? So hopefully you can or anyone can answer my questions plus I love the game boy sp so much I just never owned a sp ips before.

Hey Selina it should be safe to put it in a protective case. The screen should be well protected since it can fold shut. It is normal to have some discoloration in the corners, but not too much. Hope that helps. Best of luck! Cheers!

This isn't my first time modding a console and this video was very helpful, but my screen keeps changing the brightness level randomly by itself... I've desoldered the wire and made sure there's no bridging on the board, but the issue persists (brightness changes in random intervals). My soldering seems fine and the brightness button does work, so I've contacted FunnyPlaying's support to return the IPS kit because I'm pretty sure I received a faulty unit... I'm also applying to return their cheap transparent shell that broke off on the right hinge after literally a handful of times opening and closing the GBA. I feel like I got ripped off 🙂

Recently discovered the channel, enjoying the content production quality. It's a shame the SP has its own proprietary headphone jack, and you need an adapter to convert it to the standard 3.5mm. Why not see if there are any internal mods to cover in the future?

@@MachoNachoProductions A good set of internal mods would be to add the audio jack, and a stereo speaker to replace the mono speaker built into the unit. It is entirely doable, and every Gameboy and GBA model were designed with Stereo in mind, but it's only possible through the audio jack due to Nintendo not including stereo speakers in any of their handhelds before the DS.

I was wondering what that was as a game cartridge. But it's just a downloading type of cartridge. So it's not preloaded will games it's like a blank SD card you need a PC to transfer ROM games into.

How difficult would you say this mod was? I'm thinking about getting my first Gameboy Advance SP and I'm not sure if I should just get one that's already modded or if I should do it myself/pay someone to do it for me. I've never modded anything before, so it would be my first mod and I'm not sure if I would be able to do or if I should attempt to.

Great question! I would say if you never modded anything before, this could be a fairly tough mod. If you don’t mind forgoing the brightness capability, then you can do this mod without soldering which will make it easier. If you study the mod ahead of time and understand all the steps, I think you may be able to do it. That’s the best advice I can give. Best of luck dude! We all have to start somewhere. Cheers buddy!

I was thinking of this since I found my Old sp that still works after a decade of not charging WTF! lol but i mean u can get a pocket go 2 and have more options or an Odroid Advance but There's something about the SP even tho it's small I'd see myself playing it more then my rg300 and I don't know why. But the price I'd have to shell out for EZ flash too. But hey It looks good I might just have to get one and revive my Old SP and play some at Work ; ).

Consider restoring the SP and pairing it with am EZ Flash Omega. I just got it and love it! Gives you all the gba emulation in a cartridge.

I have a GBA SP AGS-101 model but I don't remember that it felt like this by setting the volume to maximum .. but the audio volume does not seem very high to me is this normal ? or are the capacitors like the Pc Engine GT ?

Just curious have you ever had an issue with the shoulder buttons acting up? If so how did you repair them?

You probably just need to reseat the shoulder buttons. Sometimes they can come a little loose when you open the shell. They have little spring clips that hold them into place. Careful with them though, they are sharp and hold a lot tension so when you remove them from the clips holding them in place they will snap out and can fly or cut you if your finger is near them. I recommend using a pair of tweezers to grab the spring and slowly release the tension then remove and reseat them.

I keep thinking on doing this mod for my own SP because it only has the AGS-001 screen. I'm just curious (and sorry if it's already been answered somewhere). Does this change the battery life much or does it just stay the same? Like are we still in around the 10hr range?

Great question. It’ll depend on the brightness setting you use. I’m sure you can get around the same playtime but it’ll be on a dimmer setting. At default brightness it’ll be less. Hope that helps dude. Cheers!

I have a GBA SP ags 001 that I got new and used it slightly for a year or so and then it just stayed stored away in my closest for the past 16yrs. It is in MINT condition with zero scratches on it. Should I do this IPS mod to it? Should I trim the original shell? Will it hurt the value of the console?

I did this same thing to my gba sp and I noticed the left side of the screen has a tiny gap between the edge of the screen and the shell that goes around the screen. I see some people use the foam that comes with the screen and most don’t. Did you have this problem with yours? I took it apart to readjust the screen but it happened again
