8 years later, there is still no match for the Meteor. Total game breaker! That no-escape zone and 2-way data linked network capability. It's just game over for anyone to go up against it :) The latest AIM-120 are really good and in most cases certainly good enough but the Meteor is just another level....

Can the Meteor missile also be used from the ground like a SAM battery? If not why not?

Only if adapted to do so. I figure it wouldn't take much to do it, but other options exist already, and their warheads are way bigger, their range is longer, and they are ready to be sold without the need to adapt them to a new function.

What if you replace the Meteor's front half, except for the warhead with the David's Sling Stunner's dolphin-nose dual radar/IR seeker? 😃

The JNAAM is a joint project with MBDA UK and Mitsubishi to produce a new GaN AESA seeker for the Meteor. It is intended to fit in F35 weapons bay. Testing is slated to begin this year.

Gripen E has 9 hardpoints and with the twin store pylons, a maximum of 10 Meteors.

I believe the maximum loadout is 7 meteor on Gripen E but that is not usual and normally IRIS T is carried as well.

No body knows but AIM 120D can't go as far and 260 is not in production so very secretive. Mitsubishi AAM 4B and Meteor are combining to produce an GaN AESA seeker on a Ramjet body that is designed to fit F35 weapons bay.

Depends on the delivery system. The Meteor can probably engage many nuclear cruise missiles, because they tend to be relatively large. Nuclear bombers too. However, it cannot protect against ballistic missiles or artillery-launched nukes.

Sorry to upset a patriotic Frenchman but MBDA is a joint project with Airbus 37.5% , BAE Systems 37.5% and Leonardo 25% . MBDA Meteor has several partners, UK has 39.6% , Germany 16% , France 12.4% , Italy 12% , Sweden and Spain 10% each making up the project. But you are correct in the seeker as it is the MICA / ASTER variant . Meteor is a deadly collaboration .

+Alexandre Budileanu you are mistaken. the seeker is a completely new one made by joint development of MBDA's Seeker Division and Thales Airborne System and builds on their co-operation on the AD4A. the french should be as thankful as any other country participating in the program.

MBDA Meteor can be arranged if Sweden choose to as they are partners in the missile project. But Gripen can be equipped with AMRAAM or MICA , and many IR choices .

Nobody ever gets permission to fire a missile without positive VISUAL identification of the the target. So this system is worthless.
