Prior to D3, the closest they got was to the gate of heaven but started fighting each other to see who got what before they actually won the war. When Diablo unites them into one form in D3, the only reason they didn't win is because the player stopping Diablo in the last possible moment

But if you look at the first diablo4 cinematic that ones also super creepy. I think the issue is we only get 2 cinematic. Where d2 has 4. So they have more room to play with, and Diablo 2 cinematic are more like a series of events then a story your participating in. Until the end. That being said diablo 2 is great in it own way theirs a reason its got such diehard fans.

It was suggested to bind a human and then stick the stone in them, enhancing the stone's binding but leaving whoever was bound to wrestle with Baal. Tal Rasha volunteered, and what you see in this cutscene is what happens when a horadrim mage has to wrestle with baal for centuries. Baal broke Tal Rasha's mind, but couldn't undo the bindings so long as the stone was stuck in him.
