Dude, there was a time after GOW3 when the game makers (who decided GOW3 to be the finale) asked players what they thought of Kratos and received some hate replies. So they had Cory to reinvent Kratos in a new God of war game.

My guy, Kratos had always been a sad, confused, traumatized individual, the fact that he gets to do the right thing with Atreus is a CHARACTER ARC Look at Kratos having push Calliope off to save the world, he made a mistake and didn't deserve to be with his daughter, he probably wishes he could apologize to her Instead he got a second chance with Atreus
