I remember even in X and Y Hydro Cannon was shot from Blastoise's mouth. Probably the 2D games suffered the same problems but I can't verify that easily

The animation was the same for all Pokémon in all 2D games. They kept it the same in the 3D games, probably for consistency’s sake, because most moves weren’t changed much from gen V to gen VI. The problem is that it looked jarring with Blastoise (and other Pokémon too, for other reasons), especially because he’d had a unique Hydro Pump animation since Pokémon Stadium.

Maybe they should have done it for the let's go games but even then that was their first home console game. I don't think it's inexcusable until gen 8.

It essentially involves making a unique for certain Pokemon species that's exactly the same as an existing move for all intents and purposes that aren't the animation. That being said - they have been doing that, just a lot of moves and a lot of Pokemon. The one that I have most freshly in my mind is brutal swing on Galarian Farfetch'd which I do not believe too many people noticed he has a unique move animation for that one

Im actually a gamefreak developer and the way they did it was through training each blastoise one by one to use its cannons instead of its head 👍

Easy - just rewrite Hydro Pump's animation code to have a part that checks if a Blastoise is using it. If so, play the animation you see in the vid. If not, the default. Even Stadium back on the N64 had this sort of tech because it's really basic.

It was driving me up the walls crazy that they were being that fucking lazy, especially considering they made him use his canons in Pokémon Stadium way WAYYYYY back when.... I didn't realize this was something people were upset about until this DLC fixed it. Like yeah, it's a nice detail to have, but having the attack come from the cannons needs a special exception in the code and a custom animation. I'm by no means arguing for them to change it back, this looks great, but I find it silly that people were upset that Gens 6-8 had Blastoise using the default Hydro Pump animation just like every other Pokemon.

@@krlw890eh, I think it's a combination of particularly egregious example + opinion parroting. but there's actually a ton of stuff we don't have anymore, like custom Rollout animations, Raichu using its tail as a surfboard, all the secondary idle animations for the first turn of Fly, some for being asleep, etc. At the very least I don't understand why it took them so long to once again have moves launch from an anchor point on the Pokemon's body, and not just a vague space in front of it, cuz that is real basic tech. I mean I know it's "because different dev team" but still lol
