So Adobe stepped in it earlier this week with a license update that has made many of their customers less than happy. Many customers that are looking for alternatives. Well, remember when Unity screwed up with the run-time fee and their competitors all took turns dunking on them? Well... now it's Adobe's turn. Serif, the makers of Affinity Designer and Photo, probably the two most viable Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator alternatives, have just announced a 50% off flash sale!

To new Affinity users, Welcome and give the change some time. I really battled when I made the change a few years ago. I would switch back to Adobe on a few occasions for speed and out of frustration of getting a job done and out the door. They only feature I'm still missing is "Flatten Transparency" from Illustrator but I am on V1, maybe V2 has this sorted but I've managed to work around not having it and the quirks Affinity has when merging multiple objects that contain transparency or negative space. There are SO MANY things that Affinity actually does better once you find your groove. The Studiolink via Publisher is an absolute game changer. I work on many different kinds of projects and it's so simple and quick to switch from a photo editing environment to a vector drawing environment and then to layout environment when working on multiple pages in the same document or documents all within a single environment / session. I went through a bad patch where I couldn't afford the monthly Adobe subscription for a few months but I also had to create an income from design work to get by with rent, food etc. This is when I made the final switch to Affinity, I had no choice and I ended up falling in love with it. This simply would not have been possible with Adobe's subscription horsesh*t, but what they are doing now is getting ready to serve a larger customer base. They have reached a saturation point of sorts, people are getting sick of subscriptions for every f*****g thing so they now need to convert some of "our" customers into "their" customers but getting us out the picture. They want to train their ML/Ai networks so that the customer can get what they want directly from Adobe with a single prompt and they want to use "US" to help put ourselves out of business in the future. Let's squeeze Adobe before they squeeze us.

@@Dave102693 Yes, that really sucks big time! For what it’s worth, I know for a fact that Affinity is able to open Photoshop files (.psd) anyway. Maybe a workaround for you is to convert (export) your Premiere and After Effects files to something that’s generic and can be opened by other softwares before you unsubscribe your Adobe subscription? For those working in Adobe Illustrator and InDesign I suggest they export all vital files into PDF or EPS before unsubscribing Adobe. There’s also the huge problems Lightroom users face if they unsubscribe and can no longer access their photo catalogs and adjustments. Converters exists but isn’t able to do a decent translation of everything from a Lightroom catalog file either. I think these are some of the major hurdles many face when they plan to switch away from Adobe. And Adobe knows this of course. Hence their arrogant attitude towards creatives. I hope you find a workable solution for your projects! Soon you will be relieved to be free of Adobe, I promise you! 👍

It does a decent job opening Photoshop files, and also Illustrator files but no two programs are actually comparable. If you're using certain features of Photoshop or Illustrator, those things can not be properly opened in Affinity software or any other software for that matter. It's not a strike against any software. There's no way another company can be perfectly compatible with the special features of another software. Especially since Adobe is adding new features so regularly.

There-in is the problem. Adobe, never made 'Software' for the normies. There Software was Astronomically priced when it was off-line, and stand alone. Because it was Commercial Software. The upshot of which is if you're not using Adobe Products to make money, you are using them wrong. Of course Adobe would be to kind to disagree with me, and would be happier to take your money instead. I took the plunge so you don't have to. Affinity Photo 2 has no ability to properly render a pixel font, it gives you some control over it but I've had trouble getting it to render properly, whereas Gimp does it without any issues and is totally free (2.99.18 dev build). If you want anti aliasing off, say your gamedev art is pixel art, you'll have to select all the layers, click the cog wheel in the layer panel, and choose Force Off for antialiasing. Why would you need both Affinity and Luminar? To be clear, I'm speaking strictly of photo editing functions, similar to the lightroom/photoshop combo that so many of us are trying to get away from. I'm a serious but amateur photog who had, at one point, aspirations of making a living at it, but a disability came knocking that landed me in a wheelchair and meant that from any practical perspective, I wouldn't be running around weddings or other traditional venues and snapping off photos as fast as my trigger finger can move. But I still do go out and take many photos that need to be sorted and edited, including mostly simple things... RAW processing, color balancing, contrast, removing unwanted elements, merge to HDR, panorama stitching, and I love low-light stuff, so controlling noise is a big one for me, though I am giving SERIOUS consideration to adding an r6 Mk II as a replacement/addition to my m6 Mk II.

Clip Studio Paint is a better PS. It's also much cheaper. Idk why more people don't use it. It's literally PS, but better. You have a perpetual license for $50 for pro without a sale. EX is $200 outside of sales, but you only want that if you're creating manga or animating. Again, it's perpetual. You do pay for version upgrades, but it's optional if you don't care for what each major update offers, and they're like $20. Another big plus is community created brushes and assets that are easy and simple to install. It used to be just $50 once and that's it. But to be fair, they weren't updating CSP with new features then.

I've had the Universal license since v2 dropped. The only thing keeping me with Adobe is the fact the industry standard (and other reasons), the lack of a few key features in Designer (image trace and vector halftones), and the fact that I can't find an alternative to After Effects that allows me to do 2d motion graphics as easily as AE. If I could make Apple Motion do everything I do in AE, I'd probably drop Adobe right now and just deal with the feature parity problem in Affinity Designer.

For image trace, I use Inkscape. To me, it does a remarkable job, and allowed me to kiss Adobe goodbye. For the motion graphics, have you really explored Fusion inside DaVinci Resolve? It created quitea bit of an uproar over at DPReview as Photographers weren't exactly happy and some switched back to Adobe because of the inevitable subscripton model coming to Affinity. at least there they said that for PS and LR, they would be getting a much better value. SAme for people who bought into Luminar Neo too late (although Luminar does still have a perpetual license, it doesn't get updated basically except for bug fixes but Luminar also made their product so limited most people just pay the subscription to get the extras).

I love the idea of Affinity Photo... but after about only 20 minutes, I am not sure I like it. No snap to horizontal or vertical center, text didn't even resize when I highlight it and change from 12pt to 72pt... keyboard shortcuts are very different for things other than the basics... Affinity says their variation of the shortcuts are "better," but they also should understand that a difference in workflow is the BIGGEST reason Photoshop users will try and then immediately HATE Affinity. Photoshop users have been using Photoshop for 10-20 years, so you really need to be as close as possible. I really really wish more companies like this, who are directly competing against the "big dog," would simply say at first launch, "would you like to automatically set your keyboard commands to match X software?"

It's come a long, long way, and is really only missing a few key features at this point that keeps it from being a drop-in replacement. I love it so much more than Illustrator -- it has a much more intuitive interface and is therefore much faster to use, and it has a much lighter memory footprint which makes it run much more smoothly on my aging machine at the shop. I can't speak as much for Photo or Publisher, but aside from a few frustrations, Designer is top-tier.
