@@bardicben On move 7 Dan attacks his knight. On move 8 Arin ignores it and leaves the knight undefended, which allows Dan to simultaneously take the knight, and attack both his king and rook, meaning Dan gets to take the rook too. Overall an overwhelming advantage for Dan.

These episodes, along with checkers will always be my favorite series they've done, there's something just, so so satisfying to watch underdog dan rip the ever living ass out of arin and you can tell his rage is legit in these ones, we've all felt that hot heatwave of shame when you invest a LOT of time in a game of Chess/checkers playing a semi-pro, and just slowly but surely watching your pieces get taken, alongside all the hope left of possibly winning, then having to WAIT IT OUT while you surrender excruciatingly, over the interval of 4-5 turns lol. But I could FEEL that anger, this ain't no sonic fakey fake shit, he's SEETHING. (It's pretty humiliating, 100% understandable in this case, I've came damn close to flipping quite a few chess boards over the years...)

@@TheSUPERPOTATO2000 I analyzed the game in Stockfish for funsies (since I'm still learning myself) and Arin made two other notable blunders that just made his position deteriorate so much faster, though it did say that 8. b5 took the game from even to -10. 16. h3 allowed Dan to fork the King and the Queen (and the Bishop, to be fair). (-10.8 to -21.4) Dan's only two notable blunders were 22. ... Qa5, misses a Mate in 3 (#-3 to #-9) 23. ... Nxe2 could also count since it was an unnecessary trade, but the eval beforehand was mate in 9 (which is mostly a level vision only seen in the highest levels of play) and I've just come to accept most of that endgame was Dan fucking with Arin. (#-9 to #-21, but Stockfish had to work to find it and was willing to give it something like -66 while calculating the position)

@@xXNoMoralzXx Definitely, I personally tend to stick to the London system when white, the Caro-Kann defense against e4, the Slav defense against the Queen's Gambit, and other openings with a similarly strong pawn structure that let you develop both bishops without them getting blocked in by your own pawns (something Arin did in this game, though I make an exception for the Englund Gambit declined: reversed French variation because I like punishing people who play that annoying gambit). Plus, they're pretty easy to remember for a beginner. If he looked up a few basic openings like that and had somebody go over the basic principles & tactics of chess with him (control of the center, forks, pawn chains, etc.), he'd probably do a lot better.

that's actually fairly common, i learned it as a "horse" initially too, when i was taught how to play as a kid. i think its similar to "rook" vs "castle". maybe its a regional dialect thing too, idk. if i had to guess, "horse" and "castle" are more common in the US? at least, among people who arent like professional chess players? idk
