As someone who has lived in Japan and purchased real wasabi, there's a good reason it's not used in favor of horseradish. After grating, the flavor of wasabi literally evaporates after like 30 minutes and then it no longer tastes like anything (and also the spiciness is completely gone), whereas this doesn't happen as fast with horseradish (if at all?) and also horseradish and wasabi taste very similar anyways. So, there's hardly any reason to use wasabi considering how difficult it is for practically no benefit.

Most modern wasabi is actually made from horseradish root. Actual wasabi is too expensive.
@303elliott3 жыл бұрын
And you can't grow it legally in most places outside Japan
@honorableintent3 жыл бұрын
@@303elliott That is incorrect, it's just really hard to do so most people and companies don't. Real wasabi retains its flavor for like ten minutes after being ground, so it cannot be ground and then packaged. It also grows only in specific conditions (which are more strict than almost any other plant), requires eighteen months to cultivate (and if the conditions aren't perfect that entire time, it won't be a good crop), and must be harvested by hand. Because of all of those limitations, most companies have not invested in wasabi root, especially because it cannot be mass produced by definition.
@Molue_3 жыл бұрын
Wasabi *is* horseradish, it's just a subspecies of the more general horseradish's genus and is endemic to Japan. The reason why pure horseradish is so expensive outside of Japan (even within Japan it's still a pretty penny) is that it's growing conditions are far more constraining than other horseradish varieties, they require *a lot* of water to grow, so that's why it's almost exclusively grown in gravel, as opposed to soil, in mountainous areas with plenty mountain creeks and rivers that can be temporarily redirected to flow through the wasabi fields to properly and sufficiently irrigate the plants.
@jubuttib3 жыл бұрын
@@Molue_ It's called Japanese horseradish because of the similar taste and use, but is it really fair to call it an actual horseradish? Sure, both are part of the Brassicaceae family, but are of a different genus, so you might as well call it a mustard too, potentially even cabbage? EDIT: Not that I'm an expert, I've just heard this same argument go on multiple times.

Although they never received the finished painting, it was after DaVinci's death in France when his assistant Salaì sold the painting to the French King, Francis 1, for 4,000 coins in 1519. The painting was later stolen in 1913 by an italian citizen, Vincenzo Perugia, he believed the painting rightfully belonged to Italy and kept the paining hanging in his home for two years. He was found out only after trying to sell the Mona Lisa for 100,000 to an italian gallery.
