Pease was actually the old word for pea, and peasen was the plural form. It changed when people misinterpreted the singular form as a plural and invented a new singular form. A lot of changes happened like this. Two of my favorites are apron and napkin, which come from napron and apkin. People turned "a/my napron" into "an/mine apron" and "an/mine apkin" into "a/my napkin"
