As Okinawan, I found some connection to Gamelan. I love this : melodic scale of Okinawan Traditional Music is same to Gamelan scale. Pentatonic Scale, dropping D and A. Our ancestors connected across the sea. It is so beautiful and reassuring to feel the musical connection!

I try to says that in english. In the pentatonique scale you says, there is a half-ton beetwen B and C. It's différent for the black keys of the piano. It's right ? Yves, from SIN le NOBLE, North of France.

The amazing Balinese culture deserves more Unesco recognitions! I know its Subak system and traditional dances like this have been accorded the status. Just looking at the costumes and the musical instruments in this video, you could see a lot of delicate art and craft works. I have also seen Kecak, Barong, Legong, Tari Pendet in Ubud as well as Ogoh Ogoh parade. Then, you have many stunning and often vastly different temples dating back from 11th centuries that are still well maintained and in use today. The Balinese garden and architecture is also second to none in the region I have been to more than 50 towns & cities in 9 South East Asia countries, but Bali always takes my breath away after 40+ visits. The other places I have not repeated visits more than 3 times. Lots of love from Malaysia to Indonesia and its people!

I dearly love Barong and Hanuman the white monkey. As for Gamelan ensemble, I sit there frozen mesmerised, all the thousand performers are not only together in rhythm but the rhythm moves subtly to accommodate dancers.

I notice that often thoughout the music, there is a light 'organ-type' sound, in the background. Does anyone know how that sound is being created? I don't see an 'organ', but yet, it sounds very organ-like....
@andrewj31773 жыл бұрын
Its the gong of diffrent sizes the smaller set known as 'kenong', im not music theorist but perhaps the way its shaped will resonance the 'humming' organ-like sound. I hope that help
@satriawisana7118 Жыл бұрын
there's 2 type organ-type instruments in this group, its call jegogan and calung. this components bring's the main melody with diffrent beat, calung and the main instrument ugal plays the same melody and jegogan plays the 4th note as same as calung. calung and jegogan have that sound cause the tools that used to play the instrument made by materials that impact soft and deep sound, its diffrent with another beat-play instrument at the front that prefer using wood tools to play and make the sound stronger and hi-beat.
@0x000810 ай бұрын
If it's fairly regular, it's jegog/jegoogan, the bassiest/deepest of the flat bronze bar instruments. If it's periodic (once every 30-90 seconds), then it's the big gong you see hanging in the background.

Hinduism is from India, what's your point? Indonesia, due to its strategic location for trading, is a melting pot of many different cultures, including Chinese, arab, dutch, Portuguese, Polynesian, etc. Diversity IS Indonesia's identity. If you're indonesian you should know better.
@oakgroove67573 ай бұрын
@@tofakaa5661 If you think gamelan comes from Indian hinduism, then we need to stop here. I’m not trying to bash any religions. We also have unique cultural forms in other regions, like Minangkabau in Sumatra, even though it has now been acculturated with Islam
@oakgroove67573 ай бұрын
@@tofakaa5661 While diversity is a key aspect of our identity, it doesn’t mean we should overlook or undervalue the unique cultural foundations that make up Indonesia. Hinduism, while originating from India, has been adapted and integrated into what shaping Indonesian culture in ways that are so distinct as seen in places like Bali. The same goes for Islam, which, while introduced from the Arab world, it has been embraced and transformed within local contexts. Acknowledging the diversity influences should complement, not replace any emphasis on the original cultures and traditions that define a culture. A strong national identity can coexist with diversity. For example, American culture mostly influenced by European, that does not make them similar in heritage. Things like african, native or other influences shape them and make them unique even though people from east still think them as "western". Also the culture from africa are not the same with african-american.
