I think because with Liu Kang, he always get bested in every category they compete of 🤣. That's where the seed of jealousy came from. With Raiden, he realized he got beaten because his lack of discipline. Hell, even further in his ending, he learn his lesson of humility after training Shujinko in wrong way. So I think Raiden is better friend than Liu Kang. And it seems that FG Liu Kang pair Raiden as Kung Lao's friend to fix his mistakes in previous timeline.

Because when Liu Kang was the chosen one, he was Kung Lao's better in every way. Here, Raiden bested him when they fought to decide who would represent Earthrealm in the competition, but before that, Kung Lao had always won their previous fights. So, in this timeline, Kung Lao sees that his loss was his own fault due to his overconfidence and underestimating his friend

I find Raiden and Kung Lao's friendship more believable than Lui Kang and Kung Lao's friendship. No hit of jealousy, one better than the other, or resentment, just being bros towards each other.

I think because Kung Lao character was less flanderized At the beginning liu kang was the cocky one and Kung Lao the humble one then they switch them and it’s just weird

I personally miss Liu Kang and Kung Lao 's friendship a little, but i admit that Lao and Raiden's friendship is much better because they grew up and worked together without prejudice or pride, they complete and defende each other.😊
