The Metro series comes to mind. I've never felt a more immersive sense of danger and dread than I did while venturing through various areas in the Metro games. That world is absolutely terrifying, and parts of it make Fallout 4's Glowing Sea feel like a walk in the park.

You actually don't have to redo all of Sen's Fortress if you die since there's a bonfire pretty close to the boss. It's definitely more on the hidden side compared to a lot of DS1's bonfires.

I LOVE The Glowing Sea in Fallout 4. I usually go in power armor, and pretty leveled up. Along with Far Harbor, it’s my favorite area to explore in the game. The Glowing Sea really feels and sounds post-apocalyptic and is just a blast (pun intended) to explore.

I also used Ghost Fish to farm Essence so I could power up my weapons and at first, they were frustrating but once I figured out a sure fire strategy in dealing with them, it became a cake walk. Air dash/slash helped a lot, a fully powered lightning bolt, and a charged attack were excellent tactics. With all the essence dropping, it became a wellspring of health, money, and replenishing magic until the fish were cooked.

In dead island, I remember the first time I walked right into the quarantine zone out of curiosity. I came into the game blind. In the far distance by a bridge, a few zombies just ran right towards me and swung at me almost immediately. With no music and no mission to preface the location, it scared the absolute crap out of me. No fancy tricks, no preparation, just straight violence really made me feel like those were real zombies. And christ, I have a fear of deep pools of darkness with nothing in sight. Subnautica tested my will to live in that game.

I'm starting to realize my playthrough of Elden Ring was made so much... well less insane, by finding and understanding two torches. Can't remember their names but one kept "beasts" from attacking you (which included basilisks) and the other let you see those wretched invisible backstabbing assassins chicks. Every time I saw basilisks in an area: put away shield and equip the torch, and same for every time I got randomly backstabbed.

St. Marks! What a shout out. Some of the older gamers probably know this trick - you could get a bulletproof Cheetah pretty early in GTA 3 by flipping one of the cars in one of the races and then pushing it upside down back to your first garage. On my playthroughs I would always be sure to grab one and hold onto it, just for those portions of the game where I was forced to go back through St. Marks. I'm not sure if this still works in the remaster, but it was a lifesaver back on the ps2 version.

The optional Via Infinito level from Final Fantasy X-2 was just about the worst for me, or anyone trying to 100% the game. Not only are you gifted with 100 "cloisters" (floors) of tough enemies, but every 20 floors greets you with a hard boss, culminating at the 100th floor with TWO bosses with no chance to heal in between. Oh, and the final boss is Trema, which might be my least favorite boss battle of all time. Seriously, to say that watching that jerk die after (many) multiple attempts was satisfying is the understatement of the early aughts.

Lake of Rot is annoying, but it was just another hurdle to overcome. The thing that gave me that "fucking RUUUN" feeling in Elden Ring has to be Caelid. Here I was, minding my own business in Limgrave, just vibin', and then I opened a chest and got teleported to Caelid. That dungeon was horrible, but when I stepped out, I thought I was in hell or something with huge crows and dogs trying to get at me and the blood red sky, all I could think of was finding a Site of Grace so I could get the FUCK out of there! Obviously it's less intimidating later on, but until you beat Liurnia, it's just misery and that left a way bigger impression on me than the Lake of Rot

Technically, Salvatore betrayed the player because of his paranoia. But for real, going through that part of Liberty City, either to try and find any secrets, or even just going on a leisurely drive, was probably one of the most annoying things back in the day. I'm glad that Rockstar at least had the sense to make it that any areas that were instantly hostile to the player were kept to small, off the beaten path areas like military installations, police stations, and enemy bases. Having a district of the map be near impossible to explore is just annoying. Also helps that later games don't have stunlock so players aren't getting annihilated by a surprise attack

FFIII's final dungeon, btw, is a lot more bearable in the Pixel Remaster. A couple enemies got nerfed in one of the previous release (which also made it into 3PR), but more importantly, there is an auto-save and save anywhere function. That said, the difficulty in 3 was removed in PR since you no longer need to deal with "job adjustment period" (for X battles after changing jobs you have reduced stats) so you are no longer punished for changing into a new job (which already has reduced number of hits / damage dealt by spells for being a low job level). Oh, and Dragoons are far more viable since you can obtain an unlimited number of their third best spear instead of only one! So you can equip 4 Dragoons with 8 spears that do some nice damage, or spam 4 Black Belts, and its viable.

It is tucked away on the side and isn't immediately obvious... but it's there. If you're doing all of Sen's Fortress in 1 shot, you're basically doing a challenge run. St. Mark's meant that for GTA3, unless you knew about specific bullet proof vehicles and how to get them, or a couple other glitches, you basically had to do all of the Taxi, Ambulance, Police, and a few others I forget, missions before the assassination, otherwise it became impossible to 100% the game. The moment those missions brought you to St. Marks, and they all always did, was when the mission would end because your vehicle would be destroyed before you could get back out.

Of course I was trying to explore the entire facility at the Glow (which wasn't strictly necessary) and I never tried to fully explore the Glow so my experience might have been different as a result of that.

For me it's the area just outside the School of Mensis from Bloodborne. That brain in the tower will damage you every time it sees you (Eldritch truth kinda stuff). You have to run from one cover area to another while fending off from annoying enemies along the way. If you *are* caught in the brain's line of sight, your blood literally erupts from your character as your health drains more and more. When I arrived there for the first time and figured out the brain gimmick, I just closed the game. I've already been playing for a while up to that point and had enough bs for one day. Though I will say it's not a hard section like the others listed, just annoying.

The Anvil in Borderlands 3, while manageable for endgame builds, is still a place I actively avoid going to. Even when I need to farm an item that has a dedicated drop there, the sheer number of anointed and badass enemies that spawn there make it almost unbearable to fight through, especially before the nerf to one type of anointed that would teleport in front of wherever you were firing, hold up an energy shield that would reflect your shots back at you, and only puts it away to turn invincible and ignite the floor underneath where you were standing for 10 seconds straight, only to put that reflect shield up again right after. Now imagine having to fight two of these guys at once, and another teleporting nuisance that suddenly appears to swing a buzzaxe in your face while another one is firing a minigun at you practically nonstop. I'm just thankful for game balancing at this point, but I still hate going there.

You forgot to touch on what I call the "Saddest Walk" on the other side of the Lake of Rot. There's a Grace Site on the far side where you can heal up from the damage of the Lake. If you play the game while online, pools of blood show up on spots where players have died and if you interact with them they will conjure a ghost that reenacts their final moments. Once you emerge from the Lake of Rot there's a short path and stairs you need to run down to reach the Grace Site. I call it "short" but when you're inflicted with Scarlet Rot, you're out of health potions and your health bar is rapidly depleting, this path feels like it stretches on forever. This path is FILLED with bloodstains showing the final moments of desperate souls frantically trying to reach the Grace but failing just within sight of it. Hence why I call it the "Saddest Walk" because it's just so sad to see so many people die within sight of safety.

In Dead Island, I would always play the character who was good with knives, and then as soon as I could I would pimp out the knives I was carrying. Then mainly throw them. They don't break down if you throw them. And I'm guessing it has the added benefit of not attracting everything like gunfire does, because I don't recall The Quarantine being that difficult. But it has been a number of years, so I may not be recalling correctly. I doubt Dead Island 2 will have that exploit, but I'm still looking forward to playing it when it launches.

Saints Row 3 has a quarantine zone as well once you get to a certain mission. What makes it weird is that there are still collectibles in the zone (Arapice Island) that become almost impossible to get once the zombie mission has run since to try and get them requires running the zombie gauntlet. Strangely, in game some NPCs still treat it as a normal area- even to the point of using their car to jump the raised drawbridge and drive through it totally casually. It's one of the easiest ways to get out of a jam if you're surrounded- get on one of the perpetually smoking, indestructible damaged cars, wait for a hapless NPC to happen by, and steal their car.

Lake of Rot was a ton of fun to venture through since it was one of the only levels in the whole of Elden Ring that felt like a challenge to properly navigate. The basilisks are just copy and paste from Dark Souls 3, so the same rules for fighting them applies. I was also a mage, so that made things significantly easier across the board. Melee only builds would probably have a much harder time here.

The Ghost Fish in NGB are easy, there's even a hint somewhere around. You equip the Vigoorian Flail, all the Ghost fish will come to you at once, you do a basic standing combo, you hit the quick attack "X" three or four times in a row (I can't remember off the top of my head), then you jump and repeat. You jump, because the fish won't attack you when you do and you can safely reset the combo. And you do that until all the Ghost Fish have gone. It is that easy. The only enemy I haven't worked out are the crab claw enemies. They aren't particularly stunned while you're attacking them.

And that Glowing Sea in Fallout 4? I highly recommend to play a stealth character with a hazmad suit (thus having litteraly no armor, right) but stay in stealth as long as you can and scout carefully not to get into popping up Legendary Glowing Deathclaws or - EVEN harder to fight - that infamous RAD Scorpions also glowing and legendary if your unlucky ... cause they dig in and pop out of the ground behind you and are freakin fast ... that's the real horror in Fallout 4 because Deathclaws you can cripple their legs or bleed them with these cool gun perks ... for Melee builds without Blitz or Stealth ... If talking to Isolde, the leader of the Children of Atom in the Glowing Sea, while talking to her: she slowly heals your radiation. Plus, she sells stuff, and if careful: you can loot some good stuff. The upside down building has some good loot, a cave has Power Armor, the Pyramid has some stuff you can loot, the Church, the downed jet that has the last moments recorded on a blackbox of the pilot, a hidden bunker, parking garage with some loot worth taking, etc., we must have played different games.
