Good explanation at the end. My example is my Dead Cells experience. Hell difficulty is by far the most brutal thing I've tried. A constant timer that will make more enemies spawn, enemies that aggro simply teleport to you, little margin for error, and health restoring items add to that timer. I've checked up guides, learned every enemy, and continue to explore situations. But it's so fulfilling every little bit of progress I make.

@@Onshki That was one of the common complaints when it first came out, actually; that the bosses were way too easy to cheese. I'm certainly not an ultra difficulty gamer, but the part about changing up controls really resonated. Lately, no matter what game I'm playing, a major key to success is to figure out a comfortable, more sensible control scheme for me as soon as possible. Once I've done that, everything often just clicks. I don't recall having to do that that much when I was younger, but now it's a systematic process I expect, much like character creation. Since I think I've been pretty sensible about some of the changes I've made, I wonder what percentage of game difficulty can be attributed to strange default control choices. To provide an example, I recently played Bloodborne which was my first FromSoft game. Immediately, I didn't understand why O was the dodge button, because that makes you take your thumb off camera controls and the lock-on button with the right stick in the heat of battle. It just felt wrong. And that's a difficult game where I didn't need to fight the controls. What I ultimately came up with was to swamp L2 and O. That way I can always have a finger on dodge/sprint with O now being L2. I usually only need O, my gun, formerly L2, when I'm already locked on to something and baiting a riposte. The difference was night and day when it came to better movement, and now I've beaten every single part of the game. As a final note about my example, the game does not provide in-game control swapping. I had to use a PS4 accessibility feature that swapped those two buttons on the entire system. It's not particularly awkward and easily toggled on and off with the PS button quick menu. However, as I understand it, that functionality did not exist when Bloodborne came out, so I would've been up a creek without a paddle if I was ever current with games. Also, the PS4 accessibility swapping is still very basic. You cannot, for example move three buttons around. You can only swap two between each other. I initially wanted to move L2 --> O, O --> L1, and L1 --> L2. It's not possible. (I actually prefer the current arrangement anyway.) Still, I imagine a not small number of people find additional difficulty in FromSoft games from that O button being the dodge button. Having such limited options to customize controls is totally unnecessary (in both From's and PS4's case) and often really puts a pointless stumbling block when people are trying to do harder content.

I don’t know. Never really had that much of a problem with PlayStation controls. They made a whacky decision on Arkham Knight though where instead of being able to quickly toggle detective vision using a bumper, you had to use the dpad which was super awkward.

Yes, i agree about playing games is like being a tactician and solving it more than playing. That's how i play most games and i try to experience it as a side note while learning the best way to play and or be the best player as i can be in whatever game i am playing. I used to be more zealous about this in the past but i lean more towards the enjoyment and experience now as i get older. Thanks for the video and game talk. ✌️

I actually played some games on the hardest difficulty that was available to me at the start, and for a while I kind of enjoyed it because I got to experience the game while also feeling like I'm not mindlessly playing the game, it's also probably what made me good at some of those games because I was learning how to play a game on a mode that took no prisoners. I don't really do that anymore, because I got tired of constantly dying but it was fun while it lasted.

I don't know if anyone else had this problem but in the original Mass Effect, killing thresher maws in the Mako on insanity drove me nuts. It wasn't as bad in the Legendary Edition, but when it originally came out, and the Mako so was SO wonky, I hated triggering thresher maws.
@CristuelCasto2 жыл бұрын
Those thresher maws were sure annoying; one appears right under you and you're dead in one hit! I was never able to understand the pattern if ever there was one, I guess it had to do with trying to keep yourself as far as possible from the central area.

I'm not a high level Destiny player (I actually quit recently...for now...), but my pvp skill and even my general entertainment level went up when I got a controller with back bumpers, that I programmed to jump and slide. Being able to jump and slide while keeping my thumbs on the sticks is so important, even though it took a few days to get used to. Thinking about doing the same with Rocket League

I beat both Uncharted 1 & 2 on Crushing to get the Platinum Trophies for both. When I played Uncharted 3, I played most of the Chapters on Crushing after beating them to see if I can get credit for it. But I eventually quit, because I just didn’t have the patience to continue to do it. I played Gears of War 1 & 2 on Insane, and did Gears 2 on Insane by myself! Let’s just say that I won’t be doing that ever again. Playing on those levels now that I work a lot more than I did in College, just makes it harder to do and I have less patience to persevere in those modes.

The puzzle idea is a similar idea for speed running. Specifically in games like Gato Roboto, where you're specifically exploiting some mechanics to skip sections/bosses, or to use your mech suit underwater.

A thing I've experienced is not liking the normal mode anymore, because it would be too slow or there wouldn't be enough enemies or something like that, ironically sometimes it would be harder to complete the normal mode because I had gotten so use to the hard mode that my brain would run way too fast for normal

#1 is the most accurate thing I've ever heard about games. Playing on the hardest difficulty is no longer playing the game, but trying to understand the games mechanics and coding and then figuring out how to bend or flat out break them. You no longer "Play", instead you exploit and manipulate scenarios to achieve the only correct outcome

Blind highest difficulty runs are crazy ngl. Not only do you not have any idea what’s gonna happen next, you gotta find the cheesiest way to beat the levels as well. There are some who probably like to play normal first and then the hardest later on, but some of us like to play hardest first (mainly to get achievements out of the way) and then enjoy our chill normal run later on.

One thing I dislike about controllers is that sometimes you just cannot reconfigure the buttons as you want them, sometimes you just get a selection of presets which are all as useless as each other. All buttons regardless of device should be fully customisable.

many times the issue is just the fact that games don't understand what difficulty is. Making the game cheat more is not a difficulty, its sloppy design. In the vast majority of games, "harder" difficulty just means the game stops obeying its own rules more and more. Strategy games are obviously the most notorious for this, but even in shooters, RPGs, racing games...it goes on. Whatever game you're playing, if there's something you're playing against, difficulty just means it'll cheat more. It won't just get advantages, or boosts, or actually become better at playing the game, it'll just be allowed to cheat. It's not fun, its lazy from developers and it makes difficulty in videogames completely meaningless. We don't call it skill when players cheat to win, so why is it tolerated that the game cheating is labelled a harder difficulty?

Awesome video, great subject and pretty spot on accurate. Kudos! Loved the gag in the intro with Jake tackling Falcon out of the dragon breath. :D You just had to sure that damn crawler section from Gears of War and the fricken tank bridge from Halo. Halo 3 and Gears 3 were the last shooters I beat on the hardest setting, they broke me mentally. Heck they were the last shooters I played seriously.
