In reality, Ray did not give them away out of fear that her life was at risk, but out of "revenge" and jealousy, since she believed that Chang and Ms. Yin had something and were cheating on her, because she overheard them arguing about their relationship, since Ray was a student and Chang was the school counselor, plus it could jeopardize the book club. EDIT: Ray's jealousy and betrayal may be due in part to the fact that her father cheated on her mother and Ray on several occasions mentions that she doesn't want to be or become like her, but in the end, it ends up happening, since the mother accused the father out of revenge and the authorities take him to jail (for alleged bribery schemes that were possibly false), so at the slightest "hint or suspicion" that they are betraying her too, she decides to do the same and rat them out, but since she is a young and immature girl, she thought that they would just fire or arrest Ms. Yin (as with her father), not knowing that their actions would have dire consequences and would also affect innocent people like Wei and her classmates.

Yeah, I remember reading somewhere that she exposed the club hoping it would get rid of the teacher, so she can continue her affair with the councilor. I didn't realize she got the idea because she was inspired by her own parents troubled relationship. Now she is doomed to warder the afterlife until she is willing to accept her faults for causing the demise of everyone she loved out of her own envy

Its also important to mention that her mother said "don't worry he'll live" and was smiling. Seeing her mother's attitude about the matter probably made her underestimated the punishments of Marshal Law and thought that ratting out Ms. Yin would just "give her a lesson, she'll live"

The sad thing is, this game is based on true events. It depicts how hard life in Taiwan is during the 50s and 60s under a brutal military dictatorship that views any form of dissent as supporting Communist China.

I recall reading about this time period, the "White Terror" as it's sometimes called, in college. Many elements in this game are steeped deeply in Taiwanese folklore, it really is a piece of art. I don't know if it's been mentioned, but the first enemies you encounter, the Lingered are likely shadow versions of Ray, who have fallen completely into darkness. The many-armed gargantuan creature is probably an amalgamation of all the resentment and suffering that Ray's combined actions resulted in. The old woman you sometimes see is also a figure in Taiwan folklore, though her name escapes me atm.

@@seieieor186 Her name is Meng Po, with the nickname 'Old Lady Meng'. It is she who walks up and down the path towards the bloody river. Each time Ray "dies", she offers some cryptic insight into how to handle what killed Ray as she passes by. There is a Wikipedia page dedicated to her. It is likely that she serves a larger purpose in the story, considering her 'position', but it is not shown directly.

Both! First she overheard a conversation between Chang and Ms. Yin which made her think they had a relationship/that Ms. Yin was sabotaging her, and then Chang distancing himself from Rei as a result of that conversation made her spiral further, and thus she blamed all her unhappiness on Ms. Yin and ratted her out to the Instructor.

Actually Rey snitched because of Ms. Yin. ONLY because of her. Rey thought that Ms. Yin and Chang were having a relationship. So Rey decided to get Ms. Yin into trouble over jealousy and to have revenge. But unfortunately she ended up exposing the ENTIRE book club and got every single members into trouble. Including Wei and Chang. She ends up getting a prize from the government for her "heroic actions" but... Because of her guilt... She killed herself and ended up here. She is reliving her sins over and over again.

Good video! However, I would add one thing to help the narrative. The shadows of Ray asks her questions, four in total. She has to give the right answers for the shadows to accept her, and she has to pick up three notes that explain the aftermath. If you get even one question wrong, or miss a note, you get the bad ending. Get them all and you'll get the good ending, with an added bit that showed what happened before Mr. Chang's arrest. Still a good video though! I was waiting for this one!

Don't forget to mention how the shadows have a much bigger meaning in this from a psychological POV. Ray is in a constant loop because she is in denial, refuses to accept that everything that happened was because of her while the shadow represents the version of her that accepts that it was her fault and doesn't deny it hence the "I am you, but you are not me" and "Have you forgotten or are you too afraid to remember?" parts. That version of Ray has done the deed and accepted it, the other has done it but denies it out of fear. Shadow Ray is Ray because she did the deeds, but Ray isn't Shadow Ray because she hasn't accepted that (If that even makes sense lmao). The entire game is incredibly clever in leaving you hints and clues on the REAL story behind it, after which we reach the climax where the shadow questions you to see if we as the players have understood it. Getting questions wrong is supposed to represent Ray still being in denial and having learned nothing, so the loop continues aka the bad ending. Getting them all right tho represents Ray coming face to face with the cold and blunt truth... And accepting it, the loop then breaks aka the good ending. This game is truly a wonderful experience and lots of respect to the geniuses who made it.

Great explanation and great game. The studio really knows how to create personal trauma and conflict in a setting very specific to their country's history and culture. How even tough the society is the reason why these horrible acts were able to occur, the people in the society are still the acting players thus responsibility and guilt rest on them personally. Many games use a crazy person or a spirit to be the reason why things escalate, but the studio masterfully made real historical tragedies into the escalating factor.

Wait…? Wasn’t Ray’s death was not only cause by guilt but by bullying after it was known she was the one that leaked about the book club? Because I remember a KZbinr playing the game and in one scene in the bathroom, one of the bathroom stall said stitch. I believe she was also bully and that was one of the reasons she died.

Detention is the first Taiwanese game I seen, glad I discovered the game on the Nintendo switch eshop back in 2019, because I founded a few indie games that are developed in Taiwan, but some, are not developed by the same developer. If I haven’t founded that game, I would miss out on some bangers, including a game coming out next year, made by the same developer of detention and devotion.

Chang was literally a school counselor whose WORK was to give councils to troubled students, and rei is the one who liked chang, chang and that teacher miss yin had some kind of romantic relationship.

Bro was the Taiwanese EDP going after a whole child, I didn't feel anything for him at all 😭However, the rest of the characters I felt extremely sad for, especially Wei who lost his youth, his mom, and his teacher after getting out of prison. I just wish these things didn't happen to Ray & those around her, but sadly, it's based on a true story of what happened in history, a history that can't be changed or forgotten.

The game caught me off guard so many times. It was scary, yet so subtle. I initially thought it was a regular horror game with monsters she had to escape from. But it turned out that the real monsters were her own inner demons. I like how the game's symbolisms explored humanity's deep dark flaws. I just finished the game. And honestly, both endings give me a sinking feeling. People's lives were lost and forever changed. And Ray, was the villain all along. A snitch. She was already dead the whole time and she didn't even remember. Just sad. I can't say I'm happy for Wei either, even though he got amnesty.

No, as the time Wei back to abandoned school, he should be around 60"s. Wei was released in 1975. The martial law terminated by 1987. That amnesty Wei got was issued by Taiwan government after 1998. The time Wei back to school should be around 2000-2010. Due to low birth rate, lot of schools were abandoned.
