Fractal today released its Fractal Design North XL case, following-up the hugely successful Fractal North that it launched last year. The North became famous for its wood front panel with a slat design and joins the Fractal Torrent in being one of the company's more successful cases. The North XL is a bigger version of the North, and in our first ATX case review in more than a year, we're back to analyze it with a new testing methodology and approach. Our full test methodology details will be published in the next month or so as we continue to refine and finalize a few details. For the tests shown today, things are mostly final.

@@GamersNexus I know you can't satisfy everybody, but personally I'd like to see more mATX; not everybody wants a tower the size of budget "surround sound" from the 80's.

@@UncleButterworthSame, but the issue I found is that mATX cases nowadays are either as big as some full ATX cases (like a Define Mini I have currently), or an afterthought "compromised" config on some larger ITX ones. I use a cheapy $30 mATX case for my HTPC that has the size of old "baby" AT cases and it's basically perfect but quality ones seems to be few and far between now that ITX is the "trend".

I think the small looks better so I’ll still be getting that for my next build. The small’s proportions just look more pleasing to me, somehow more elegant. I think the one additional wooden slat in the XL makes it look busier and that takes away from the sleekness of the original.

@@GamersNexus I don't see me replacing mine at all. The "normal" sized is already pretty big, and will provide plenty of room for what I have (Ryzen 7 3700x with 6700XT). Even if I were to upgrade to better (and most likely bigger) components I'd still have enough room. Even though I aimed for a semi-budget pc as my first I'm glad I did not cut down on my case. Should save me the hassle and money of replacing that too.

One thing that would be cool for the new testing methodology is to take the top ten cases of the old methodology and see how the cases hold up in the new methodology.

Torrent is not perfect. One flaw, very poor access to top part of motherboard when using large air cooler. There should be more cut-outs. Or part in question should have had screws instead of being riveted so that it can be removed during installation. Dremel is essentially a requirement.

27:12 Regarding Case suggestions: Montech AIR 903 Max is currently working its way into becoming the default recommendation for budget (end even non-budget) builds among a lot of the usual pc building/parts advice community thanks to a full mesh front and 4 stock fans at only about 70$. If you're not already working on that one, I think it would be interesting to see how that performs and at what points the low price becomes noticable in terms of quality etc. Another personal interest of mine would Thermaltakes Tower 300, just cause its different and i've seen claims that the hanging GPU mount doesnt pair well with larger/heavier cards. It's an mATX case though, so i guess not really the target of this methodology, even if its large enough to fit all your standard parts.

My issue is that there are no good cases bellow 60$. Good old days just few years ago I could get a really, really nice case for 60-70 and a decent case for 30-40$ and most came with a full set of fans! and even power supplies! My first case I bought I paid 39$ in 2016. Per inflation, it would cost 50$. But it was an actually good freaking case, not the current garbage in the sub 60 range.

Yep, bought a case 20 years ago and it came with fans and a power supply.... Was probably around $50 - $60. The PSU it came with even still works. It's too out of date to likely be upgraded again though, a dual slot video card is all it can fit, and it barely fits that... But I like having 5.25" and 2.5" bays.

I ripped almost all of my music to a nas + cloud years ago but some files have become corrupted so I want the ability to re-rip them if needed.

As someone who’s always been a big fan of mid towers, and was super interested in the North, I didn’t buy it because I felt it was just too small. The North XL is only a hair larger than my old h700 that I’m looking to replace, and ticks all of the boxes I felt the North was lacking on. I’ll 100% be buying this case!

A suggestion for PC cases reviews. You really do amazing, deep dive and collect a lot of data. I think it would be good to consolidate that data. How? Using grades, lets say A-F and categories (noise, thermal, build options (regarding psu sizes, gpu sizes, motherboard sizes, gpu orientations), cooling options (aio, fans, passive ...), ease of build/replacing parts, footprint...) You establish ranges of values for each grade for each category (ease of build is more on the subjective side, but if there isn't a lot of screws and they are all of the same type and size... you get it). If you need granularity you could add + and - to grades of those products that are near the boundaries. So, in the end you could say in a review or on the site, this case is GN (certified) A in noise and A+ thermals, but C in cooling options, or we have a new A+ case in thermals.

I have HAF-X I bought in 2013, and it has 4 NAS drives (place for 5), one M2 and non M2 SSD. I see these cabinet reviews for fun, but there is no way in hell I'm ever buying any of this crap without minimum support for 4 internal mechanical drives I use for storage. I'm having a rather amused chuckle here looking at the aesthetics of the wood-on-black as memories of Yamaha units from the 80s are flooding back in time. I’m excited for the methodology video. I’ve been working on a custom case that’s gotta couple of unique twists and so far with the proliferation of wood and metal dust in the shop I’ve been testing thermals with a cartridge heater from a 3d printer instead of expensive actual computer parts. Have a suspicion your guys work is going to help me a lot finalizing the design. Really appreciate all the work you put in.

I just bought and used the Montech air 903 max in my build less than a week ago. And now I see Gamersnexus mention them in their video today. Very happy with the over all construction of my case. UPS did try to kill it but only dented the mesh thankfully. Price was $75 to my door with 4 fans, rgb controller/ fan hub. Very competitive case in the budget segment.

Great seeing the case review back! Saw the mention of so many brands and cases! In particular of Montech, with their Air 903 and King 95. Particularly the king, has seen so many builds popping up on Reddit and quite a number of it had great feedback. I want to see if the review will be able to back all those up!

Your review helped me with my torrent purchase, this review has me thinking about the XL version of this case for my next build, the original north was too small so this is kind of perfect. Shame there aren't more cases with solid or mesh panels for those of us who don't want a glass side panel, but glad the reviews are back!

Thanks to you guys i bought Fractal Torrent, amazing looking case with insane airflow! Really love addition of open air bench temperatures, it gives some relative performance numbers. Using hotter more modern hardware also nice, as new metrics with VRAM, VRM etc. thoose also very nice.

I built my latest gaming rig for my Christmas present this year. I'm very pleased with it, even though it was a matter of weeks before the 4070 Super was released, rendering my 4070Ti obsolete. Ah well, such is life. I like the retro look of these cases, they remind me of high-end speakers from way back in the way back. I always enjoy the case reviews, it's very interesting to see what reality is, in contrast to all the marketing hype.

I'm glad you mentioned the GPU blowthrough heat configuration issue for CPU temps. As an air enthusiast this has given me a few times the thought of tackling it, mainly just reversing airflow from back exhaust to intake (obviously lacks filters but have been curious about performance or generally other solutions).
