I avoid the story for the most part, not enough time or motivation to try and fully understand it and as games have gotten bigger and bigger (I grew up in the 16 bit era) I've immersed myself in the world, characters, the quests, tasks, environments, challenges. No need for story for me to enjoy games, it's why the Souls style games are my fave style, can get on with the game and not worry too much about understanding everything. I love the Witcher 3, no idea about the story but the game is just amazing!

Dave, I would be happy to explain American Football to you. Core concept is simple, but the details seem to require knowledge of American Football's own language to understand. The basics: Each team tries to get the football to the opposite end of the field, known as the "endzone". Each attempt by the offense to move the football is called a "play". The offense has 4 chances, or "downs", to move the football a total of 10 yards. If they achieve this goal, they get another set of downs to attempt to move the ball further toward the endzone. The opposing team is then on defense, attempting to prevent the offense from moving the ball forward. If the offense exhausts their downs without gaining a total of 10 yards, the other team gets possession of the ball. Often times if the offense does not gain the required 10 yards on 3rd down, they will use 4th down to kick the ball downfield to the opposing team, known as a "punt". The other team gets possession of the ball this way, but now they have a greater distance to cover before they can score. A play is over when the ball carrier is tackled to the ground, or if the ball is thrown forward but is not caught. If a team member possesses the football in the endzone (either by catching it or running it in) it is a "touchdown" worth 6 points. A "touchdown" is the American equivalent of a "goal" in world football. After scoring a touchdown, you can either kick the ball through the upright posts for one extra point, or you can run an additional play to get the ball into the endzone again for 2 extra points. Another common way to score points is a "field goal". If an offense faces 4th down but they're close to the endzone, they can attempt kick the ball through the goal posts. If it goes through, it is a "field goal" worth 3 points. The game lasts 4 quarters. In college and professional football each quarter is 15 minutes, in high school football (at least here in Texas), each quarter is 12 minutes. There are all sorts of rules about when the clock actually runs, when it stops, etc. But that's its own rabbit hole. There are entire philosophies of play-calling on both offense and defense, various offensive formations and defensive schemes, rules on how the game clock is managed, how penalties work, additional but more obscure ways to score points, and an entire history of how the game has evolved over the decades. Not to mention learning all of the offensive and defensive positions and their general roles and responsibilities. Many of these things are not necessary to understand to enjoy the game itself, but in my opinion they do make it more interesting.

I find that the best way to play is to just understand who the main characters are, and then just go with the flow on everything else. I mean there's so much random stuff happening that you can never be sure whether you were supposed to have predicted it or not. MGSV's opening couple of chapters are possibly the best examples of that. The escape from the hospital and away from the "man on fire" and (for the sake of avoiding spoilers) "gas mask kid", and then the encounter with the mist soldiers in the desert. Even seasoned MGS players were dumbfounded with that stuff.

Listening to Dave explain American football is priceless and endearing (coming from an American who played football growing up and watches it religiously). To follow up on your point, I got interested in soccer (or, the other football) during the '06 World Cup and learned the rules of the sport from FIFA 2007. Both footballs have "offsides", but they are very different in the definitions. Limited substitutions, what constitutes a yellow or red card, the clock counting up instead of down, relegation, etc. Shout out to games and sports and sports games.

It seems like a game with so much potential but when you get 10s or 100s of hours into it you start to see how thin the veneer really is. There is a reason many describe it as "a mile wide, an inch deep". Stopping right after the tutorial it must seem like a much deeper more interesting game than it does after 100 hours and realizing all you have been doing is moving numbers around.

Playstation should have an avatar where you can customize them like gears and weapons or sports gear by getting those parts in game achievements. You beat a game or do special mission in any game for example god of war. You go back to your avatar and equip a God of war axe or gauntlet. With this, the value if a game will remain high plus replay value

My game I enjoyed but didn’t understand is Bloodborne. I’ve only recently finished the game but I don’t understand anything. I don’t read into lore of games, I just learn what they teach me as I play and all I know is I was a hunter and something was very wrong with everyone else.

Read the description of everything you find. Or succumb to some lore videos. There are some amazing ones out there. And it really adds to the game when you begin to understand what is happening. It's very Lovecraftian.

I felt that way when I played FF10's blitzball. I couldn't figure it out. I was so mad a couple years later when I found out that whats-his-faces ultimate weapon you could only get if you won all the games!😭😭

Hey Rob, Elite Dangerous is getting updated right now to make it a lot more accessible for new pilots, where the speed is more under control and you can auto-launch and auto-dock in starter systems. Give it a go. I have been to the other end of the galaxy and back in it and love it, but waiting on the massive update coming next year.

My mind comprehends what to do in fighting games, but my hands don't. I find it very difficult to train muscle memory in almost anything, especially small finger motions like moving joysticks and pressing specific buttons in specific orders with very specific timing.

To be fair to Elle, it's clear from all the games after 2 that even the developers didn't understand the Kingdom Hearts series. Speaking of, Elle, if you see this comment, you should check out the "So this is basically Kingdom Hearts" video by JelloApocalypse. It will make you feel so much better for what you don't get.

I will say that it was rob on a friday feature, talking about Elite Dangerous, that actually got me to go and play it for myself. specifically how he would talk about how hard it was to dock to a station... and boy did it not disappoint. Fun hour ( conservatively) trying to figure out how to get out of supercruise and I refused look up a guide or restart the tutorial... Now I'm trying buy all the ships!

El, Rob I am completely with your choices. I have had KHIII sitting on the backlo---Who am I kidding, Game graveyard, from almost launch (gotta play the other 8ish games to fully appreciate the experience ya know.). Elite Dangerous was purchased several years ago and while I loved it adulting prevented me from being a full time SpaceWarriorMerchantPirateHunter who dabbles in exotic DLC trading. Then it too fell into the Graveyard.

Mine would be Rob's pick too. On Playstation, (EVE Online would be the other platforms) - Elite Dangerous. I too was drawn in by the promise of discovering magnificent ancient relics and delving into the depths of the universe at the helm of my own Millennium Falcon... Only to crash into the shuttlebay doors on my way out and when I did master that, I became a space bus driver... -_-

Anno. I love the series. Played every game. Have no clue how to play it 'properly'. I fail at every scenario/challenge. I just choose free play on easiest difficulty with no challenges and make bread for my people and expand a little.

I don't understand any sports games... And admittedly, once I start overthinking the heartless and nobodies in KH, I feel like my brain wants to break. The rest of KH's story though = beautiful.

I love the God Eater series, but due to the amount of reading I have to do in the side, I think I'm getting it but not fully. Also basically Soulsborne series, Sekiro included. Sekiro may be more understandable more than the Soulsborne, but it's like I'm watching an action movie but there's a lot of lore behind that you don't know about

How did I miss this upload? Also, I've been intrigued by Madden a few times, played the demo and then gone "Nah." I'll stick to NHL. Also, got to agree with Elite Dangerous. The learning curve is near vertical, but once you get even half way good, you're laughing. Helps that I played it on pc before PS4 though. Saying that, my first attempt to play it had me rage quit while trying to land at a space station, uninstall the game and not play it for about two months...
