The costs will be higher as they'll sell a lot of accessories based on convenience. Pop into a shop pick up some models, paints and then grab one of these spur of the moment or after receiving advice from staff on the floor. Lots of people getting into it will go out on a spending spree as well (or their parents will) and buy them to get them started.

what store will tell you to buy GW stuff? Every hobby store I have been to is staffed by actual hobbyists and they would never try to sell you a $35 knife over the $5 one that rational people use. And really they have an incentive to sell you cheap accessories to actually get you to stay in the hobby. If new people come in and are told they need to shill out $150 for some clippers and knife and a drill are they going to be coming back?

While their costs are ridiculous. one thing that I can say in defence of the mould line remover. It's a very safe tool to give to a kid in the hobby to help with their models if they aren't old enough to trust with a knife yet.

Built over 300 models using generic clippers off ebay ($5) [they are still sharp and work fine], a large pack of assorted sand paper grits ($7), a name brand Xacto Handle & blades ($7) and a few Tamiya glue extra thins ($8). Games workshop is drunk, as usual.

You can buy excellent clippers in the electrical section of Home Depot. They are literally the same clippers used in cutting phone lines, or cat5 cables. I have a pair from my installation days, and they work perfectly. Like $10-15 for a pair. $50 for a pair is a joke if you know what they are commonly used for.

The Mongol Horde look is OK but I seem to recall some artwork of Cadian Rough Riders from a few years ago, and I would have preferred some consistency in terms of look as there are otherwise none of these Mongol guys as foot soldiers. Are they ONLY riders? Agreed I suppose we can transplant Cadian heads but I'm not so sure.

I absolutely agree that if you want to spend the money that they're asking for the citadel tools, just go shopping for gunpla stuff. I've got a Dspiae clipper and that thing cost less than the GW shears and is very nice and cuts very cleanly. Clippers are the one hobby tool I'd say to not cheap out on if you do have budget. A good sharp pair can make cutting models out and cleaning them up a ton easier to get nice.

I'm one of the few that actually like the mould line remover, it's a handy tool to have around. Is it overpriced? Yes. No question there, but I still like it. One good thing about it as well, is that it's childproof. I wouldn't give a young child an exacto knife to scrape of mould lines (even if the exacto knife is dulled down by our standards).

Actually this isn't the first time a boxed set team comes out with options not in the box. The phobos space marines can field Reivers, but the sprue provided only makes Infiltrators and Incursors

Regarding KT: I like more options. Same with the Phobos Kill Team and the "missing" Reivers. The Box would've been way to bloated and therefore expensive if they added all the options. The way its shipped is perfectly fine but I really enjoy exploring the optional stuff :)

i remember 4 years ago I went to japan for a few weeks, and while i was there I went to a small hobby shop in akihabara and bought 5 hobby cutters all the same that have no brand on them but they have green handles. Nevertheless im still using one and its been 4 years.

For $40 you can get some premium Knipex cutters made in Germany and (I think) has a lifetime warranty. Knipex tools are literally the best cutters I have ever used, and unless you are cutting chunks of concrete and rebar you will literally never need another set (unless you are obsessed with tools like myself).

@@MrUltimategamer44 yes. The metal models are made of pewter, an extremely malleable metal. Cutting it won’t be an issue, I’d just be careful of damaging the blades.

I too cheap out on tools - I got nippers for under £5, still snips plastic. What you don't cheap out on however, is the sofa! Very nice.

For $35 you can get the Tamiya electric handy drill, which is a low rpm drill for plastic. It's even a kit itself and can be painted however you like.

I use a sharp, pointy, triangle mold line remover from Revell, after I switched blades on both of my hobby knives and thoroughly wrecked my thumb. Didn’t cut my thumb in a year. To the other tools, the Army Painter stuff is affordable and gets the job done well.

I use tin snips for sprue removal, an xacto knife and variety of files for clean up. The only unnecessary stupid purchase I made was an army painter wet pallet where I use to use a take out box from Cracker barrel.

The old mold line remover is great.... for big model kits/gunpla. You often have big mold lines on panels and having a sturdy blade that doesnt cut is perfect

Couple of coats of lacquer will preserve those copper tips for longer.

just looked in my rules from Periah Nexus, there are rules for all the 4 Mancers also the Plasmancer. BUT i don't know if they will be updating the rules for them. but yes if they follow the rules in the other books they will have rules for the others also, or they could be that you need the other rules in addition to the new ones.

I know I was upset when I figured out that the Phobos kill team box doesn’t have Reivers in it, even though they’re on the Phobos kill team. However, I think that including all of the faction options, even if they aren’t in the box, is ultimately a good thing. The compendium teams are quite bad compared to the newer box set and White Dwarf teams, and I want to see my favorite models with good rules ASAP, even if I have to buy them separately

the gw guy in our store told me the mould line remover is so kids can scrape their models, they may have access to clippers but not a scalpel, obviously the cost is pretty prohibitive for a child who would rather spend their pocket money/allowance on models but that's an issue across the board (no pun intended)

My mate gave me his mould remover from the starter set. It's actually grand and works fine. But it's no substitute for a hobby knife imo. The knife is just far more versatile. But for a young kid it's probably better. And they'll catch newbies and parents even with these prices. Mostly because they won't know where to get good or better equivalents for cheaper but also partially due to convenience.

As long as the team it comes with works, more rules for kill team is always good. I feel like some of the teams are kind of cramped, so more options, even if not immediately provided, is cool.

The dice bullets are cool but if you are throwing 30 of them you ant to see immediatly what number it is, it's kinda hard if the number is written on it and in a pretty dark color too.

Since the "upgrade" sprue of the Necrons only gives an Aprentek (because the Deathmarks new faces are just new visuals), I will use my Plasmancer as an Aprentek, and my Royal Warden as the "Immortal leader". I think it's great for us Necron Players that we can proxy the full team with our 40k stuff and play a new Team without spending more money, but I get the complaints about the upgrade sprue feeling a bit lazy by GW

The inclusion of a chuck, does not make up for the otherwise horrible ergonomics of the pin vise drill. Trying to put the nut for the chuck in the middle of the handle makes the thing essentially unusable for its intended purpose. The collet version was slightly less convenient when switching bits, but at least it did the job well once the bit was installed.

I think that more rules for more units for KT is always a good thing, even if those units are not included in a box set. Now, if only GW would address some of the underperforming compendium teams. Edit: Necromunda is the best GW game right now. Shame on you for leaving it off your list!

Judging by the texturing on the plastic over the back of the blade on the hobby knife, it’s probably for a combination of leverage and control? The second seems dubious and if you need a lot of leverage - as someone who has cut themselves really badly several times cutting drywall in a dumb way - that just means your blade is too dull and you should change it. A dull blade is so insanely dangerous!

You mentioned never rolling more than 6 dice in Kill Team. I play Compendium Sisters of Battle, and my Sisters Repentia I've rolled 15 dice at a time. They have their own version of Feel No Pain (roll a die for each wound taken, on a 5 or 6, don't take the wound).

Every book I've read so far in 40k universe has different battle regiments mixing. Cadians with Mordian or Valhallans isn't crazy. I think it's fine that the rough riders don't look anything like the standard troop choice. As far as I know, Cadians wouldn't ride horses if sentinels, leman russes or baneblades are an option.

If you have to buy hobby branded knife, then you can just get the army painter hobby knife. It's pricey for being what it is (a really comfy exacto knife), but the design is really comfy, it comes with a decent amount of blades, its chunky so for me with larger hands it's realy comfortable, and it's less than 20 dollars

Shadowvaults is not the first box with rules for models not in the Box. Moroch has rules for Reivers (not in the Box), Moroch and Octarius has rules for more Models than are actually inside the Box (not sure if that counts for this argument)

I recently bought a hobby tool kit for around $25 Australian. It's marketed as a Gundam building kit but it has everything you need for building minis and terrain. GW tools are ridiculously overpriced. I'd rather put my money into something else. I'm actually starting a channel dedicated to budget tabletop and war gaming stuff.

It had a hobby mat, files, sanding and polishing boards, sponges and sanding paper, scissors, cutting pliers, steel ruler, tweezers, craft knives, pin vice drill, a rechargeable sanding pen and other stuff. It is perfectly sufficient for tabletop stuff. GW charging $40 - $50 for a pin vice drill is ridiculous when you can get them for $7.

having rules for the chronomancer makes it playable in kill team again as it was previously available from the pariah nexus kill team box from kill team 1 :D but was left out as an option to choose in the compendium in kill team 2 in the necron section, which has left the necrons to be rather bland for kill team 2

I'm going this disagree about the cost of tools. More expensive tools generally are better, the feel and quality ends up worth it. The only reason I see to buy the cheaper tools if you are starting out, getting the feel of if this is the hobby. I don't know if GW tools are worth the price, but every tool I get from scale modeling has been great. I have paid 34 bucks for the thin clippers. I would love try the new tools, but the only one that interested me is the mold line scraper, but the price is scary. For have the price I can get 2 or 3 different one from other company's Digging the new set feels more informal set.

I really like how the rough rider horses are heavily armoured on the front, but almost unarmoured in the back. Really shows that these guys are meant to be charging headlong into danger all the time. And yeah, unless you deal with a lot of metal models, there's not really a good reason to get super premium tools, especially for Warhammer. Even brands like Godhand where the selling point is reduced scarring from cutting, you'll be painting over them for miniatures anyway... So 100% agree that money should be spent on overpriced models, instead of overpriced tools. :P

The phobos strike team was the same as the necrons, they have rules for reivers but there are none in the box. I like the extra options and can see why they didn't include them, as would be too much plastic Vs other teams, but having to buy more than one extra box for a bespoke team would be excessive. Needing to buy 2 boxes though is no different to other teams like vet guard, where you need 2 boxes anyway for a full roster

To be fair everything can get taken out by everything in 40k haha. The knife looks good. Not sure about the price but then again I paid $50+ for Godhands so cant be hypocritical. The guard at the top of the blade is a nice touch for added protection and sturdiness when doing intense work for kitbashes/conversions

Basically every tool GW sells aside from the painting handle (at least the old one that was like £10ish), are borderline scams meant new hobbyists who don't know cheaper options exist. Don't expect anything good from them tool wise, ever.

Citadel cutters are 55$aud so I would think they be closer to 35$usd 🤔 but like u say everything is overpriced from gw, like it’s not Incredibly bad, but so Mach stuff out there for cheaper and/or better if ppl do a lil bit of research. NinJon do a great video recently about the new tools 🥰🐶

Ninjon gave a pretty honest review on the tools. He didn't blatantly bash GW products as others do out of spite. The knife seems like the best tool out of the 4. It's defintely well thought out and has some good conveniences
