Bought a 3D printer this year and it's been much cheaper than buying an army and also let me branch out into other armies more easily since I can just print off better models than what GW makes cheaper. 3D print, use OPR or other systems (including prior editions), buy from other hobbyists, get better paints at half the price, GW shouldn't get a penny.

As a historical gamer I’ve always found the slavish devotion linking to a particular range of figures to a specific game rather strange, more so when the “official” figures are so expensive. I watched your video on using proxy figures which seemed entirely sensible, indeed I said so in the comments. Yes by all means buy official characters etc. but rank and file buy cheaper substitutes if available. Sadly it seems that Games Workshop is behaving like the public ally listed company it is, where profit comes before all else, and not a company that genuinely looks after its customers. The solution is simple - buy proxy models,

I would have suggested playing miniatures-agnostic games like Frostgrave, Stargrave or Oathmark (for Fantasy/SCI-FI only, of course). There are many ways to make "business sense". GW always always chooses the super greedy one. Unless mandated from outside license holder, there was no reason to nerf any figures. Most likely most new players would go for the new stuff that is available, but there is no need to punish old players with wast armies or people up for a big conversion challenge. As a company you could just have announced the models would no longer be in production. Its the perfect way to push the older players out, that should be the ones welcoming the new. GW's practices of marketing and supply have been awful over the last decade. The line, "Don't ask questions, just consume product and then get excited for next products" is on point. Creating artificial demand through limited supply, stopping rules support for old models, website queues, and the fear of missing out are all prominent strategies. They want you to purchase impulsively. As a group that his pigeon holed themselves into the box of a "miniature company," there is no easy way for them to combat 3d printing. Instead, they get their customer base excited and push for them spend on the next thing while quietly putting the old out to pasture.

If you have experience converting, you can always turn a pile of oldhammer gems in to a unique and funky army/gang/warband. I've been upcycling my old squats into a new playable gang (or army at this point). It holds value really well. I feel like Legacy/Legends rules should become more accepted, even if you don't have a local gaming group aside from the local Games Workshop. It should also be more accepted to just play with rules from an older Edition of the game, if both parties agree on it/build their list around it - because while Legends/Legacy units won't be updated by GW in any game, it's still their models, that they produced, so hardly any store keeper can prohibit you from taking them to a local game, if they're a 100% original model. Wheras GW as a company should also do an archive of older edition rules on their website. Heck, even if they sell it online/as a hardcover for order for a reasonable prize I also wouldn't mind, but that way they'd also prevent people from showing up with fan-edited wikis like Wahapedia for their rules on older editions. But given that buisiness doesn't always mean that something should make sense, hard to tell if they'd go that step. That would also help to make people take Legends/Legacy unit profiles more serious, because then there's no fear that they'd be gone forever at some point.

First...yes it's absolutely okay to be upset about this. Personally I'm not happy about it myself. I wish that GW would at least offer a "made to order" service like Reaper Miniatures does for older metal models that don't sell well. Yeah you'll have to wait a bit to get them, but you can still order them. GW already has the molds, they're not losing money by doing this. As for rules... that's the issue. Reaper can do this because they mostly make generic rpg minis, and they're not tied to a rule set. So there's no point in GW offering anything for sale if there's no rules, despite a lot of us just wanting these minis to paint and collect. That said, I think the Dunland army will be okay. I wouldn't doubt if some new version of the horsemen becomes available and the old Dunland hereos could be used as generic captains and such. It's not perfect but it's a solution that most of the other armies don't have. Unless you're in a competitive event, I doubt anyone would care if you're using them as proxies, especially if they're GW minis. I'm worried that my Rangers of the North army is done for, myself.

Easy solution from trading card games: Have a vintage/legacy format where people can play with all armies which is less focused on big tournaments and more on providing people who have been into the game for decades to play with all their toys. “Most of these miniatures will be going off sale, and some have already been unavailable for a while, but they will still be receiving Legacies profiles so people with existing collections can continue to enjoy using those miniatures in their games. Certain miniatures are being rolled into different profiles, while a few are being removed from the game. It's surprising to hear that so many people can only game at G.W. stores or events rather than at a club where most people wouldn't care.

I had a Slaves to Darkeness army for AoS, composed entirely of Warcry gangs. They looked *gloriously* chaotic. All defunct now.

I'm a old guy, and after marriage and 4 kids I am back to gaming after almost 25 years break. I only proxy figs or play miniatures agnostic games. My history is I played the original single book hard copies of fantasy and 40k. I went a little past those but rejected from the GW economy. Saying that, I truly feel you man.

I’m sure GW will give dunland a full glow up with the new edition as they are the new bad guys

Virtually everything you said is wrong. Pick an edition and pick an edition or game and play it. Stop letting Games Workshop control you. Use your mini and forget the latest cash grab from the crooks
@surfulКүн бұрын
Except it’s getting other people to play that edition you like and for many a causal gamer to walk into a store and say let’s play 4th edition WHFB is going to be difficult

I lived through Warhammer Fantasy 5th 'HeroHammer' to 6th (Killing off Special Characters and Forcing alot of Regimental purchases), i continued through 6th to 7th 'Horde Hammer' (Thats Right even bigger units) then come 8th and the 'End Times' (Thats Right Fantasy is Dead... Roll in Age of Sigmar) ... the perpetual tread mill of GW churns on and the Rate is INCREASING.

Were you not aware that War of the Rohirrim was coming? It was clear in my eyes that Dunland would receive a range refresh. "Miniatures removed from sale and entering Legacies: Thrydan Wolfsbane, Frída Tallspear, Gorûlf Ironskin, Dunlending Chieftain, Dunlending Huscarls, Dunlending Warriors, Dunlending Horsemen" Are you aware that Legacies means they _will not be removed from the game_ - they will have rules printed for them, only not tournament-legal lists.

Haven’t collected or played for years but I just bought a dreadnaught as a curiosity after KZbin threw GW content onto my home and watching this is how I learn my beloved Erkenbrand is no longer canon 😭

The Lord of the Rings miniature game always was about the copyrights. The miniatures from characters of the movies had to be "allowed" to be released in the final version from the actors. Then GW had rights from the movies, some rights from the books and for limited time even the rights to create own, named characters, but this all is limited and might end, then they have to remove thos miniatures... And as the new movie is coming out, they use this chance to make a little soft-reboot with more control, using a hype over limited time and "balancing" the game and having the opportunity to make new sets to sell...
@PascalWirth-n3pКүн бұрын
Should at least keep the Dunling until they have replacement. There complete lack of armor was always off-putting for me, and foreword resin is a pain. It would admittedly been kind of fun for Angmar models to be immediately thrashed just to really drive home who GW is today.
@little_isalinaКүн бұрын
i wouldnt be upset about miniatures going out of production and being moved to legends, if GW hadnt just proven with AoS that they arent going to keep the promise they gave when Legends first came out, and that being a legends unit just means youre on death row to eventually stop having rules at all.
@billbales8530Күн бұрын
For me, this is not okay. The promise when I got into the hobby almost a decade ago was this: Invest in the game, buy the models over time, and slowly grow your collection. They'll be worth it, and you can play the game for ages, just buying new stuff as you want. That is no longer the case. Primaris stripped that possibility heavily, and seeing the range purges, the downsizing of rulebooks, everything else... it's disheartening to see. Then you see other games, like Battletech, where the systems are more interactive, the collections last for decades longer (I got guys at my LGS still using old metal models from the 90s, and have even used some myself), and they're cheaper for the same length of game. I hate being negative about it, because I love the lore and universe of 40k (the game I got into), but its just... insane.
@RuneincКүн бұрын
As a collector mostly it pisses me off when they squat things and mention it midday, midweek so you can't nab any while at work, I'm now having to trawl Ebay for the models at a reasonable price. They should really do this on a weekend. Though I feel they should keep some of the models around for collectors or just make them Made To Order. This is me talking purely from a collectors stand point. As for when the models are gone or such I normally repurpose the models for things like Oathmark or other system that are models agnostic.
@craggylotusКүн бұрын
Made To Order would make most sense. "hey, we're getting rid of these in 3 months, let us know within that time and we'll take your order and sell them to you one last time" would let them get a bunch of sales they wouldn't otherwise, either from people speculating for the future, or just folks who've not been able to get the models because they've been out of stock for months (Savage Orruk Boar Boyz for example) and would let them retire the models without too much complaining. Of course, this is the only company I've ever bought from who don't understand what a Pre-order is and instead just make as many of something as they think they'll sell, and then let people buy the items a week or two before they plan to post them out.

@imkringe439Күн бұрын
similar thing happened in aos, i feel like most of the models, apart from the more obscure ones, will just be updated with new models at some point like what happened with storm cast, i think you're army will be fine and can just use old models
@SpenglenoodleКүн бұрын
Tutorials are fun but I think a better longform project you can incorporate that into is an army journal/project log where you sort of just catalogue/video your process of building an army ranging from lore/inspiration, painting kitbashing etc

Yes, I was going to buy a bunch of classic land speeders a couple weeks before they got rid of them. I’m glad I didn’t.

First time? I am a 90s Squat player who pushed a lawn mower around the hot Florida sun to buy an army as a 13 year old. Then be told by other players that I couldn't play because I didn't have a codex. Then 3rd dropped and was completely eliminated.
@FrabnoilКүн бұрын
Uh, those are Middle Earth miniatures. Intended for Warhammer: Middle Earth Battles. Not surprised they pulled the plug as they probably no longer have the rights to make them. BUT! You have the minis. You can still use them.
@davidwasilewskiКүн бұрын
GW have been doing this for decades. I used to own a squat army for 40k and a beasts of chaos army for AoS. No longer! I’ve sold all my Warhammer very recently. The only GW games I play now are Warmaster and Legions Imperialis. 3D printers are brrrrr-ing!
@linamishima4 сағат бұрын
This is why I dropped out of the hobby back at the switch to third edition 40k. Not so much the rules changes, but the realisation that my existing investment in miniatures didn't matter to them, all that mattered was future sales.
@dominikfittschen2955Күн бұрын
I know it's not the same but if you want to play Dunland than use the Rohirrim army list. For every named Dunland you will find a Rohirrim and if you need saruman use gandalfs rules.
@tinnedteaКүн бұрын
Use the mini's to play historical battles instead.
@bendeguzvarga816Күн бұрын
There will be new dunland profiles, you will be able to use these minies easily. Even at GW tournaments I think.
