@repthe21st66Күн бұрын
@twotreesgaming tldr: sort of. It's generally done with the external intent of simplifying and streamlining a model range, and the internal intent of updating a model line or removing problematic ones. Also they will often stop production of a model if it is outdated, doesn't sell well and to remove clutter. The most notorious example of this was when the whole Space Marine line was replaced by a new line of Space Marine models. Over the last few years, most space marine from the old line stopped receiving support or being purchasable or even legal to run anymore. The new space marine line looks better, sure, and it's more accessible to new players, but collections of decades were invalidated, and the old space marine line was working fine, generally. We see this happen every year and with every new edition in smaller scales than this, sometimes with entire factions being lost. So in conclusion, generally speaking the reasons for this tend to be inexcusably corporate with little regard for the consumer, but we do generally -and grudgingly - admit in the depth of time that it's usually fine in the long run. A lot of losses of unique models have no upside for the consumer, and are purely corporate decisions. Still, people keep their models and just use them as proxies. Often, GWs efforts to consolidate 40s factions result in massive removals of cool models; with the only upside being the hope that this ends up in better game health. This is nebulous and can't be quantified or proven. It's a cyclical and and at the end of the day personal argument. Is less better? Is complexity to be sacrificed for accessibility? Is redundancy a bad thing? What do YOU think?
@TredHedJonКүн бұрын
@@twotreesgaming As someone who has played just about all of GWs games....maybe? But seriously it feels like just a way to cycle through things and get you to buy more. This is a pretty standard practice for GW in their other games now... to me its only a matter of time now that it will be the 'FOMO grab your latest minis or miss out' like AoS or 40k. Makes me sad
@theendofmyropemydudeКүн бұрын
@twotreesgaming the game? Not really. The experience? Absolutely not.
@repthe21st66Күн бұрын
@@twotreesgaming I had a huge answer typed up that apparently went to the shadow realm; RIP. Tl;DR: Sort of kind of, not really. GW has a history or removing models for a few different reasons. Reasons like lowering complexity, increasing accessibility, removing redundancies, or getting rid of outdated or problematic lines. The most infamous of such cases was when the entire Space Marine model range started being replaced some years ago and still in that process, invalidating decades of collections from their core audience. Most of the old space marine line now has no rules, or isn't legal, or is actively in the process of being phased out. On one hand, the new line looks better, is more accessible to new players and easy to parse, and fits modern proportions better; on the other hand the old line worked fine mostly and the aforementioned decades of work from people. Personally I think the new line is better, but I didn't have a history of decades of work and investment that got thrown away. They will often also remove individual models that some exec decides is outdated or poses some sort of problem of identity or clutter. These decisions are never made with the consumer in mind and always purely corporate in thought process. Someone can make the argument that, in the long term, what is good for the corporation is good for the game, but that is a weird argument to get into. Often (almost yearly) and definitely with every new codex the game gets shook up. Some new models are introduced and more are being retired. Entire army ranges and subfactions have gone the way of the Dodo, with named characters and their armies biting the dust. Even beautiful, recent models have gone that way, usually to reduce redundancy and clutter supposedly. All this has little genuine effect on the game in terms of improving it on the day to day. It's only positive effects are in the macro scale but on the immediate, it affects the playerbase largely negatively except for the nebulous promise of the vague term of 'game health'. In a way, this is always a very personal argument. Is complexity worth sacrificing for accessibility? Is it disingenuous to arbitrarily invalidate past products in order to try to make things better? Is redundancy bad? What do you think?

GW made up BS Easterling heroes that don’t feature anywhere stay, as does Gullivar (I mean, seriously?) while Khamul (actually named in the book) along with other characters actually IN the movies get the chop (I mean you literally SEE Grima get on a horse!). My fear is that this new boxed set will be the start of the new 'edition' phase of MESBG were GW have decided that it needs refreshing every few years so everyone has buy new figures and rules each edition because they don't make money from a solid 20 year old ruleset and 20 year old figures.

Some big surprises staying on the range though. Woses, hasharin, and black nums probably my biggest
@twotreesgamingКүн бұрын
Yeah, the more I think about it the more it doesn't add up with what's stayed. Harad has been massively culled but we still have Dragon Cult Acolytes and Iron Guard. Hopefully it means there will be a future supplement sooner rather than later to fill them back out a bit.

Love the video I just wanted to weigh in on something I keep hearing creators say, which is that new players don't want to show up to a table against something they don't recognize from the films. I obviously can't prove that isn't true, but I can at least say in my anecdotal experience there are lots of players for which that is very much not the case. From the beginning I've been much more interested in encountering book/expanded lore represented on the table than constantly revisiting the same scenes/characters from the films on the tabletop. A lot of the depth and variety from the game is being relegated to Legacies and for me that is a giant signpost that this game is headed in a direction that some of us are going to dislike.
@twotreesgamingКүн бұрын
Thanks for the constructive response! I think the "way in" to the hobby is most often going to be through the films or books - especially with the new one coming. But in terms of expanded stuff, I guess I might be wrong because they have still left a ton of stuff like Easterling heores in the game that are GW inventions. I am struggling to see the reason behind certain choices it has to be said...
@_ccannКүн бұрын
@ I totally agree that most new players will be brought in by seeing characters from the movies (and to some extent the books) represented on the table, and it makes sense from a business perspective, I just think that there are a lot of players really invested in the game, or who would become really invested in the game, who are more interested in Middle Earth than new line cinemas, if that makes sense. And catering to the first group in this case is alienating the second, whereas in the past it was more balanced IMO. And I hear you, which models were relegated to Legacies and which weren’t seems wildly inconsistent even based on their stated criteria.
@twotreesgaming20 сағат бұрын

In all likelihood you'll be able to play them in non-gw events for years. Secondly, it's a bit silly saying that a factiok is gutted right now. Not only because the models that are "leaving" aren't really lesving, but also because we have no idea how armies will be built on the next edition. So it's entirely possible that the "faction" that's losing things won't actually exist, but rather legendary legion style armies.

I agree! Who's gonna do all Balin's work for him now?!

This video seems based on the false assumption that GW cares about how the game plays. GW is removing any models they are afraid Amazon made claim infringes their Rings of Power rights, and GW accountants are looking at the sales rate for the remaining models without caring about game balance or players that have invested in less mainstream armies.

This is true, except that I know the rules team do care and I'm more looking at it from their point of view. GW has said "ditch the morgul stalkers they don't sell", I'm confident (hopeful) the rules team will fill that gap.

It's genuinely you guys I feel for most, it's not good. The rest of the range can be considered unlucky and a lot has been gone for a while, the reintroduction of Erestor isn't fair really.

They're gutting the game.

Hopefully it's more of a streamlining...!

This is outrageous. Just no.

Haha, it took a second to digest. I'm not loving that my recently painted things will be legacy...

@ I refuse to digest this. So do the friends in my small group. We are sticking to current and just gonna 3d print if model isn’t available.

Nothing they have done in the last 5 years has been good.

It's been sporadic but I think there's been some solid releases like the Beornings.

Tbh I didn’t care for some of the models in the first place. The Dunlending „Vikings“ doesn’t fit the lore for example. I’m glad they gone. Another one is the old Balin that doesn’t look like the hobbit version. I just hope this means we get new models for the factions and doesn’t mean all factions will have less variety.

Yep, I'm hoping this too. It sucks right now but hopefully it's going to give them a bit of freedom to expand where the range needs it in other ways now.

He's ok too but he's not gonna be beefy, he'll just be as we see him in the films
