I've personally interacted with some of the shill channels for Warhammer in the UK at various conventions. They have their clique. It's quite disgusting the depths they will go to to keep in GW's good graces. They also like to be very petty and petulant to those they deem their lessers. I couldn't stand it on the internet let alone in face to face conversations. And they could tell I wasn't impressed so they avoid me now at cons whenever I see them. Basically acting like school children around me. Not adult or mature behaviour at all. But par for the course for those people.

My big issue is how much of a gap and how much following those creators get versus average Joe. If you're in that clique, you get all the freebies early, you somehow gain a great following with a minimum of effort. It just pisses me off that creators who actually work for what they have get passed up.

The issue ive had with MWG is. Dave and Matt are amazing at what they do. I was part of their subs before their new place. Before all the paided services. So they did it out of love for the hobby. The rest of the crew at the time and still today as i check in now and again. Cant be bothered getfing the rules right, EVER. Instead of correcting them off camera they just blow through like ot doesn matter. Quark was know to make small mistakes but corrected them. Luka and the rest are painful to watch and a waste of my time. Many of my local crew shared the same opinion. The final straw was when a guy flew up from Callifornia. To play his firt ever game of 8th. Quark played a meta Custodes list. Tabled him second turn. And badically said have a nice flight back. Discusting.

I disagree with discourse being a good channel, she chases rage clicks constantly and uses very clickbaity titles. I am not a fan of people being negative all the time, its not healthy for you and if you are constantly finding yourself being negative about the hobby then its likely time to move on. You can have passion and advocate for consumer rights without being an arse about it.

Just to give a differing opinion and not to start a debate. Because it's just our opinions and we have to agree to disagree. Discourse is one of my favorites. I find her delivery, jokes, and skits so funny. Like imo I haven't seen anyone who can bring that kind of off the cuff and consistent humor in the warhammer youtube community. I think the effort she puts into script writing and her speaking skills really come through. And I like how much of a consumer advocate she is. I enjoy how hard she argues, because you need to go that hard against GW to maybe, just maybe, be heard. I guess the big difference is that I think she is being really funny about it instead of being an arse about it. I can see how she's polarizing though. I feel like I even didn't like her videos at first. I'm just really glad her unique style is in the warhammer space.

As I said I think she's kind of pigeonholed Into the anti gw position so we just get an unrelenting tide of negativity about them, that's fine if you hate them but newbies are going to be confused. Personally I think GW is just as scummy as any other big corpo, it's nothing unique to them and no amount of activism on our part will change that because we are such a small and unimportant part of their customerbase that we can be ignored. It's like being mad at the government, you can rage and rage but in the end nothing will happen. They are simply too big and have too much of a stranglehold on the hobby.

Do you really watch her videos ? From start till end ? Yes, she makes clickbaity titles but that's the YT game so hate the game, not the player. As for her videos, she's not negative all the time and will say when GW make or made some good decisions (Combat Patrols being a good entry for new players without selling their organs,...) but it's often in the middle of the video and/or is one of her arguments for when GW went from consumer friendly to whalers... Her very sarcastic style and sense of humour may not be for everyone but having someone being actually critical in a constructive way (she compares GW prices and box contents with plenty of other games and companies, showing that you can have fun with something else for less money and more minis...).

The reality is, with the advent of plastic printers, we don't even need companies with access to expensive mold factories. Its a courtesy and desire for a particular quality that brings us to the merch. They need to catch up because if anyone figures out you can just sell rulebooks and blueprints it is entirely over for the industry standard.

I watched Totalbiscuit a fair bit before, when I was younger. I liked his content and found some good info from his videos. I feel something of a connection to him as apparently him and me are the only two people on the planet who liked Brink. That being said, when I heard you say he was a consumer advocate I feel the need to bring up one of his opinions that I feel was, frankly, anti-consumer. Not to speak ill of the dead, but he's on record saying he doesn't think people have a right to buy video games second hand. He made a whole video about it. He made some good points in the video about how used media impacts video game developers and publishers more than it affects other things. But no matter how I look at it that opinion to me seems blatantly anti-consumer. He's still an important figure in the hobby as far as I'm concerned, but I feel conflicted calling an advocate for the consumer. In some ways yes, but in others not so much.

What I do not like as a painter are those "influencers" that get every single new mini, dunk it in contrast and post it on IG. Everybody then creams themself in the comments about how "good" it looks. It's hideous in fact. Then GW does an article on community with 10 almost identical contrast slathered botched jobs and occasionaly one actually good one and call it done. What I wanna see is few veteran painters paint one of the new minis to the best of their abilities and show that.

As long as we as players treat GW as the pinacle of the Wargaming Hobby the shilling will continue. Yeah GW are the best money makers but they are not best in any other way. Best models? No Best rules? Nope Best shop? Nah Best price? .... Best in beeing out there advertising? Sure but only because we lifted them on a pillar in the first place, not a spot they deserve anymore. Fair, but I will say I just watched Cult of Paint's upload from yesterday and Henry, Andy, Matt and Rich have always been fair but firm, positive but frank, when it comes to GW's shortcomings. Henry was talking about the gap filling and mold lines in the new jump pack marines and the poor quality of the black templars transfer sheet. And they get stuff sent early to review. Perhaps the difference is these guys are all golden demon winners and therefore have their own independent credibility. Anyone disagree?

Poor Hammer is a channel I've taken a liking to. Sure they excessively gripe on GW, though well deserved, they provide some nice tips and tricks on occasion for getting into the hobby. Their paint video for example is quite nice.

I know GW titles are the most widespread. I agree that at this moment they control the market. That said, the only way to change that is to stop giving in to them. Warlord Games is a great company with a huge variety of games, start collecting some of their games. You can get 2 bolt action armies for the price of 1 40k army typically. For the price of 1 40k army you can pick up an army you and a friend can play with to get them interested in it. If you want a science fiction aesthetic or you love diesel punk, Konflikt 47 is there. Admittedly some K47 models can get a little pricey, but still not as bad as comparable GW models honestly. As you say North, don’t stand in the fire and complain it’s hot. Start voting with your dollars… or pounds… or euros. You know what I mean.

I understand why, and I'm not going to pay those silly prices, but a lot of people will. Games Workshop have a legitimate problem of trying to keep the shareholders, who want to see a constant uptick in value, happy, and the only way they can do that - at least at this time - is to raise their prices year on year, quarter on quarter. They are a victim of their own success; to maintain their market value, the curve on a graph has to keep going up, up, up. A lot of people who are into gaming - most people in fact - do not have a 3D printer and the price of getting stuff printed is not necessarily all that cheap. Cheap as chips to print yourself, if you are willing to put in the time and effort to learn how and you can deal with the toxic mess and fumes, but plastic kits are still king. GW have the most popular sci-fi war game, and they have both brand recognition and High Street presence in Cities all over the World, with gaming tables.

My best bet for the US would be Battletech, but it is a different game with its own set of issues. However, it has many pros, like being miniature agnostic and books published 30 years ago are mostly compatible with the most recent rules.
