I definitely sympathise with #1. Painting for 10 years then having someone in the friend circle outdoing you for their first minis while sending you work in progress photos with messages like that would totally feel like shit. Art is a very transferable skill though. I've seen the leg up that art students and artists have when they paint their first 40k first-hand and if Max is chain watching KZbin tuts then the models will inevitably look good.
@henrycunningham89755 ай бұрын
First story is really a skill issue and i think OP doesn’t want to improve himself. He calls out that his friend is using “KZbinr techniques” as if it is a bad thing and not just actively trying to better your painting by learning. I think that reveals that he doesn’t try to improve his painting, I think that if you really have been hobbying for 10 years and you still think your painting is lack luster that is really just because you haven’t tried to improve (generally) and that is fine but you can’t have it both ways and be upset when someone does work to paint well.

Nuts, I think I'm close to being the first nightmare. Not that I'm a prodigy or anything just good enough to overshadow my hobby guide. I toned it down years later when I had matured somewhat, but still I'm now seeing it through new eyes. Like me perhaps he's just excited to be in the hobby and enjoying excelling at something new. Encourage him, but also make clear to him that a game is a collaboration, you're both trying to come out with an awesome result, win or lose.

That’s first nightmare, I get that. But I feel like “Max”. I feel it is more like “you’re my Warhammer friend, look at my cool models”. I’m always supportive of people’s models, but I must have spent a couple years watching painting tutorials before I ever put paint to model. I’m one of the best painters in my city and I’ve barely started in the hobby. But I’m OCD and have great brush control. That helps.

"Max" from the first story is either a genius or a shithead. Dave from the second story is a really cool guy. I wonder what games he worked on.

First one is going to split the room but I think it's fair to feel like that if you're being outdone at something you've been doing for ten years. Seeing amazing stuff on insta and having someone in your friend group doing amazing stuff is a big difference. He only becomes a knob when he starts being salty to Max in messages IMO.

Idk frist story guy just has a Excited friend and hes being a dick about it
@jensablefur1555 ай бұрын
My first instinct is he was going to be a dick but if someone in your friend circle jumps on board and paints better than you do after being in the hobby for a decade I can see why that feels shit. I think that Nick might be taking it all a bit too seriously and it feels rather "first world problem" but looking at your army and feeling like you've wasted your time and money is horrible. I've been there before but for other reasons.
@Jethric5 ай бұрын
I'd say he's only a dick if he verbalises it to Max (edit: or gatekeeps and refuses to play him etc) and gets salty on messenger. It's a bit childish to feel like this as an adult sure but that's why you keep some thoughts to yourself

One thing i will say is in terms of learning art the warhammer community is incredibly helpful and welcoming and everyone has a different way of painting their are countless warhammer painting vids that are all incredibly useful unlike most other art communities on KZbin were vids are sped up or they skip ahead several steps constantly which is incredibly frustrating. a good example is anime art vids i swear it's like torture trying to find a decent anime art vid that doesnt seem to either skip ahead several steps , speed up or some have other issues that don't help you at all.

I feel for that first nightmare. One of my buddies from High School is one of those guys who just picks up everything so quickly. On the one hand it's absolutely infuriating, but on the other... he's a really solid guy, so I can't be angry at *him* for it. Back in the 90's I introduced him to Street Fighter 2 and other fighting games. I won the first two games, and I don't ever think I beat him again. He started playing his third and fourth rank characters against me, and gradually worked up to his better characters. Introduced him to Magic the Gathering? Same thing. We played one open-hand game so he could see how it worked, and I won about two games after that. Never again. I once heard it said that the only super-powers that Superman didn't have were the ones he hadn't tried yet. Some people just seem to be like that. It just comes down to their attitude. My pal Mike never got a big head, and consciously tried to keep things fun for all parties involved. I never saw him try anything artistic, so no clue how he would handle that side of Warhammer. But he at least tried not to stomp me.

To the first story, if the guy has experience painting ofc he's going to have immediate transferrable skills. If Warhammer painting is the first type you've done then it's something you need to work at. The more skills you gain the quicker it is to develop new ones. He clearly knows how to research and implement what he's learned in all interests. Might be an obsession with being the best and if that's the case don't take it personally, that's a problem he has.

Hey North, I have often seen the “ my first model “ posts on Reddit that look extremely well painted. I will sometimes compliment them before asking if they have previous painting experience. Some had painted Airfix or other games so it was a first 40k model but not first painted. Others seemed to be natural with it and some I think were lies. My first ever model was the metal Chaos Terminator Champion from 1996. It was very patchy and bad but I still keep it as a reminder of what I started with. I guess that is the dual side of the painting aspect, those natural at it and those who really have to push hard to improve. A..

I usually agree with NE but I definitely can't get on board with that first story, I feel like the description of Max is already skewed heavily by the writer who constantly feels like he's being outdone. I want to see Max's perspective - "I tried to get into the hobby but my friend gave me the cold shoulder" lmao.

First guy sounds like a bit of a knob tbh. Ive been there but being mad someones better at painting than you is cringe. Even if he is looking for validation, why does his hurt feelings take precedent over new guy's excitement and enjoyment? Sounds like the guys a bit of a bellend and jealous.

The first guy has some issues, someone being better than you at something doesn’t diminish what you do in the slightest. If you can’t be mature enough to wish your mate well and hope he is enjoying the hobby, that’s fine, but be mature about it and acknowledge that it is you that is robbing your own joy and don’t act like he is the wrong in slightest for trying to connect with you over a shared interest. There is a saying, comparison is the thief of joy, and I think it applies here. If you did the hobby because it truly made you happy, you would be happy your friend is a capable painter and his work should add to your hobby and the experience. The OP gave all the answers, the answer is yes to all of those suggestions you made.

So the first story I find a bit pathetic. If you have been painting for 10 years and are intimidated by how a first time painter, you missed the mark on one or several things: A) you should put more effort in your painting ("skill" is for a large part just time spent) B) you should be happy with the amount of effort you put into your painting, and accept the standard of quality that comes with that effort C) you should be confident that your models are good enough for you, regardless of the fact that there are better painters out there

A month late of a comment but I think you may be slightly uncharitable with Max. It’s equally possible that, while he is very good at painting, he could just be insanely insecure and is fishing for reassurance and is looking to his “warhammer” friend for confirmation. I’ve got several artist friends that are phenomenal but genuinely believe professional level stuff is dogshit. If the dude’s is actually trying to rub your nose in it, then yeah 100% your advice is valid. That said, I completely sympathize with the first dude with painting envy. It’s demoralizing to have someone pick something up and just rock you on it. His feelings are understandable

It may be the fact the first guy simply wants to get to know you better ? It's like you said you two are the only ones into the hobby in your circle so maybe instead of him being a source of anguish you can turn it into a friend to enjoy the hobby with and bind over with.It can be really hard to swallow your pride and admit yeah he's new and better than me at this. but that doesn't mean it has to stay that way. Instead, maybe speak to him and try to see if he can teach you some of those transferable techniques that make his models seem so much better. As for playing games maybe talk about how you dislike meta lists but would be happy to have some games so long as they are friendly and not going to be a slog of meta gaming bs. Play the game if he doesn't listen and starts being a meta player say look good game but I'm not having fun and if I'm not having fun then it's not worth the time. I could be totally wrong but if you don't give him a chance your not gaining anything if you do this could be a chance to improve your own painting skill and develop a new and better friend to hobby with maybe even play some 2v2 games in the future together?
