The price rises aren't even the whole picture. Factoring in shrinkflation of the combat patrols, and increase in number of models required to make up a 2000pt army, the actual price of warhammer is astronomically higher

@jpr36615 ай бұрын
I'm still a little shocked by this price increase, which turns out to be quite significant and far from the 3-5% promised. There are 20 year old kits that have doubled their price, the price of books and codices have also doubled and the bottom line is that relatively new figurines can no longer be playable from one edition to the next. I am disgusted with their business practices. There are people interested in the Warhammer universe, gaming, painting but who don't take the plunge to purchase because it's too expensive. And here I'm talking about adults who work and earn a relatively good living. For my part, I stop changing versions, repurchasing books and codexes for the price of a week's vacation. The miniatures are great, I will finish a collection or two that I started but I think the breaking point has been reached for me. On the other hand, that means that we are cutting ourselves off from the base of players who play regularly in clubs, because they will continue to follow fashion and change everything with each version. How sad.

And this was at a time when a schoolboy like me could save a couple of weeks pocket money and buy a tactical or terminator squad. No issues. I'm now a farther of three, and I would never fund my kids into getting into GW. It's poor value for money as a parent. You dont know if your kid will fully embrace the hobby or if it'll be a fad. I'd rather pay out for a playstation or xbox over Warhammer. I think there's less long time players entering the hobby nowadays, and GW has to cover the loss of unit sales by these above inflation yearly price increases. They have share holders to appease. They are going to eventually price themselves out of the market. Unless they make the hobby more affordable for parents and kids who rely on pocket money.

Its frustrating to see a company like GW who have grown into a household name, failing at something ANY business student could tell you is Business 101. Alienating customers is literally OPPOSITE to every marketing technique I learnt at Uni. Yes 'target' audiences but never actively exclude anyone because inclusion is a businesses best friend. More customers > more sales > more money > more product > ect ect. GW has unfortunately dug itself into a hole after the success of the pandemic and they are to dumb to accept that that stint was a fluke. They should have invested the money, up dated their business model (3D printing for example) and set themselves up for another 30yrs of sustainability. Its a shame they are not that smart. Instead they are raising profits and putting another nail in the GW coffin. Its a rookie move and ya hate to see it.

I'd also like to point out that when I started gaming - it was because I'd read books from the '60s (and earlier, like HG Wells') about historical gaming. 40K was NOT my introduction to gaming, except in the sense of first play. I got into it reluctantly, because it was all there was in the store and I wanted to play *something.* (And even then, I leaned towards historical tropes, like Imperial Guard, which were among the things that attracted me most to Warhammer.) Twenty-five years later ...? I'd walk into the store and discover Warlord Games (founded, rules written and minis made by the best of ex-GW employees). I'd have gotten into Black Powder, or at least bought Perry historicals and started playing the '60s classic rules I'd found and was eager to play. And I might never have noticed GW at all. The crazy thing is that in 1999, $70 for the 3rd edition box set was a lot of money for me - and I never actually bought it. Last year, GW made the same minis (but only the figures - not the book, terrain or accessories) available for $100. I can afford it now, but I want the damn 3rd Edition set back, and that would at least double the price.

The justification for their price rise being inflation is a strange one(and not the first time). They only charge what they think people will pay. But their warchest is amassed from people's disposable income. If disposable income drops in general, so should the price of luxury goods, until they're a net loss and they disappear from the market (or become a high luxury). They're treating their products like necessities. Its as if they're managed by a supermarket CEO.
@011284mm5 ай бұрын
Exept the supermarket CEO's and CFO's a few years back were actually fighting their suppliers to keep prices down. Overpaying on taxes to look like they were making more money and paying their staff above minimum wage once they had done a little time with the company. Plus staff discounts. GW, not so much.
@Raygun90005 ай бұрын
@@011284mm but they're completely different industries. One is luxury and the other necessity. How they treat their staff and suppliers is immaterial to what prices they charge. It's not the cost that makes the price, it's what people will pay.

Honestly, the moment Imperial Guard hit 35 bucks a box for ten minis (meaning thrice the price I paid in the late '90s at 23 bucks for twenty), I gave up caring about the prices. I play historicals now, I read Black Library and rules online, and on the rare occasions I buy GW stuff it's the cheap starter sets and board games (20 gaunts for 40 bucks, plus a 30-dollar board into the bargain, is cheaper than they've been since the early '90s). Even in historicals, I mostly build paper figures and terrain these days. When I play 40K at all, it's 3rd or 4th edition. I like the game as it was decades ago, and I have plenty of minis. The first historical game I bought - one of the ones that got me into the hobby - was last updated in 1999. I still have the rulebook I bought then, and it is still good, and the game is still the most popular in its genre so it's easy to find players in any group or convention. If GW had done the same thing, we'd still be in 3rd edition... which I wouldn't mind. It might be just because they were the rules when I started, but I liked and would happily stick with 3rd/4th edition 40K or 5th/6th edition Fantasy, with occasional new minis.

10:50 That's straight up not true. New kits are being sold within minutes and WH is becoming more and more mainstream. None of these things would be happening if GW were bleeding customers. The only reason GW is increasing prices is because they know they can get away with it. GW doesn't need any more new customers when they are failing to satisfy even the current demand.

the biggest problem the hobby, as a whole, has is IF GW does hit critical mass, how much of the people that are being squeezed out turn to another hobby or just call it a bad deal and leave the hobby entirely without looking outside the bubble, current conversion rates would be interesting to see. The straw for me was after finishing my imperial guard army and looking at another one to start and realizing just how much the cost would be and something in my head saying "no, that's enough" the most ive bought lately was the 30k basilisk for my 40k guard. And ive little interest in investing in another system or army from them.

Sadly i’m stuck in GW bubble because of local community. GW games is most popular and i started with GW products. Last year i already started to drop some GW games sold stuff and stick to buying only models from second hand (if possible) or copies. Mentally i can’t switch to 3d prints, they look to different from gw models. After this news i’m starting to think about ditching more GW games and will try to stick with stuff what i have. Sad part is that my kid is getting older and i would like to share my hobby with him but i can’t afford another army for my kid ☹️

It's sad to see so many people being pushed out of this amazing hobby due to one bad decision by GW after another. I got priced out back in 5th and tried to come back in late 9th and was beyond stunned to see the cost of models (most the exact same sculpts almost a decade old). 3D printing is what brought me back into the hobby and I'm already 4 armies deep and beginnings of others. With another price increase incoming I really can't see 40k having a bright future. Glad to hear you've changed your opinion on 3D sculpts, there are some insanely talented people out there making better models than GW for a fraction of the price

I *want* to be able to get the GW models that tickle my fancy, but I was priced out even before joining the hobby. Plus GW being very threat happy with their IP. Currently it makes me feel bad actually wanting to buy an occasional official model. (Then there's my local wargaming group that doesn't want to allow more than the occasional 3D printed model even in the hobby side. Which really sucks when I genuinely don't enjoy assembling plastic kits, only intend to play a couple games a year if that, and just want to hang out and paint what excites me while admiring other people's models and games.)

A Veblen good is a type of luxury good, named after American economist Thorstein Veblen, for which the demand increases as the price increases, in apparent contradiction of the law of demand, resulting in an upward-sloping demand curve. The higher prices of Veblen goods may make them desirable as a status symbol in the practices of conspicuous consumption and conspicuous leisure. A product may be a Veblen good because it is a positional good, something few others can own. Makes me wonder if that’s their aim

I might not have the most qualifications to talk about this hobby as I am relatively a new comer, I started during COVID as I wanted to be apart of the larger hobbling community and have something to do during my free time. I met plenty of friendly people during my Journey with this IP and I wish to continue this as I enjoy both the game and the hobby. But during the great Fan-Animation Purge, my Faith in this company was shaken, And now with everyday crap going up, along with GW's Price increases, I am afraid that I might not be able to continue enjoying this game. Not to mentioning that I have No dout in my mind that they are going to get rid of my favorite characters from the game. characters Like Gabriel Seth, or Sargent Harker, or even Eisenhorn. To me, I love the Game, the Hobby and the community, but not enough to continue to give my money to GW. Once the Price changes come into Effect, I will not be buying any more Models and will instead just Use what I have. It won't be much, but it will do. sorry for the word vomit.

Definitely time for me to make a soft exit from GW. I may still buy the occasional box for my main armies (thousand sons and seraphon) as new cool looking units for them come out, and maybe the odd one box combat patrol kit, but I am definitely shelving my plans of attempting to build any new armies for the foreseeable future due to fear of yet more shrinkflation in value boxes combined with these price increases. And I had at least 2 armies I was looking at getting into. Once my lease is up at my current apartment and I'm in a new one with the space, I'm gonna put the money I'll have saved not starting those 2 armies into a good 3d printer and still have probably half of that money left over

White Dwarf is gay now, the new codex are just the same as the previous codex and ate out of date points wise almost immediately. Black Library is utter garbage now that the Horus Heresy is done. The prices are absolutely insane. This happened in the early 2000s-to he censorship, the ignoring the fans, the desperate search for new fans at the expense of old fans. I've bought their stuff, spent thousands, since 1981-1982, but I'm done now. I bought a 3D printed Nagash proxy this month that I'm really excited about, in large part because I would rather play a generic massive skeleton knight than the named character of Nagash. But also I prefer the aesthetics of the 3D model. It's incredibly sculpted and fits in with the OBR miniature line quite well. It's also $68 vs $120. I think 2024 is the year that GW profits decrease. 10th edition 40k helped boost the numbers in 2023, but I feel that 4th edition AoS and it's skaven and stormcast box isn't going to put up huge numbers that meet the huge expectations. Now is a great time to buy used lots and armies from ebay. I also love how the mini's are already built.

Well, my reprinters are going to be happy. Combine this with shrinkflation on boxes, pointsflation on armies and it’s a lot more than 3-5%. Other model companies are sucking up the costs, GW aren’t raising prices for inflation, they’re raising them so they can keep pushing their maximum threshold. They’re making bigger profits each year so inflation is not hurting them. They do not pay their staff these huge price rises either, so don’t go thinking it’s for the greater good. One of the companies I work for has had to raise prices, but they also know they can’t raise them to match inflation and so have to eat some costs.
