For Lupin III, it looks like the money bags are all lined up along the top of the stage, and the dotted-line ones you were trying to grab are probably just indicators for where you're supposed to drop them.
@ravagingwolverine2 жыл бұрын
That was my first impression and that is correct having checked it. I think the player score indicators led Joe to believe all the action took place below rather than being part of the play field, and I can understand that confusion, especially when sampling all the games. I have a feeling he still wouldn't have liked it much more, but at least we know that's how the game works.
@Wyrdwad2 жыл бұрын
@@dragonchaserkev Yeah, there are a ton of classic games that get very unfairly dismissed because the majority of players simply don't "get" them, indeed. I'm not saying Lupin III here is one such game -- it honestly looks to be a fairly run-of-the-mill maze game at best, so as Ravagingwolverine said, I rather doubt Joe would've liked it much better even if he HAD figured out how to play it -- but I've played a ton of classic-era games that I'm SO GLAD I took the time to learn properly. Alcazar: The Forgotten Fortress is a good example -- I played it on MSX, but it was also on Colecovision and a number of other microcomputers of the era. It's from 1984, and at first glance, it looks like a proto-Zelda game, but with garish graphics, no music, and procedurally generated dungeons that get very samey very quickly. It's only after you read the manual that you learn it's a frigging STEALTH GAME. On the harder difficulties especially, you need to use clues, both visual and aural, to figure out what enemies await you in the surrounding rooms, and then use whatever items, weapons, or traps happen to be at your disposal to dispose of them quickly... preferably while they're still off-screen. It's INCREDIBLY strategic, INCREDIBLY tense, and INCREDIBLY addictive. It's honestly kind of bonkers just how sophisticated a stealth game it is, considering it was made in 1984. Beating it on the hardest difficulty is no small feat, but is extraordinarily satisfying when you pull it off, and I've come to regard it as one of my personal favorite games of that era now. But if I hadn't read a PDF of the Colecovision manual that I found online to figure out how things work... I would've probably just dismissed it as a fairly boring predecessor to The Legend of Zelda, and moved on to something else. And OH MAN would I ever have been missing out if I'd done that.
@GameSack2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure why I didn't notice those up there! Probably had something to do with the monochrome graphics.
@godchi1dvonsteuben7702 жыл бұрын
He understood that, that's why he said "try to get the money bags" and did not say "a game where you try to get dotted outlines." What he didn't understand was how to get the money bags, as they are all the way at the top of the screen. In an area where there were no platforms to climb, to reach them.
@Wyrdwad2 жыл бұрын
@@godchi1dvonsteuben770 Er... Not sure if joking. ;) He did NOT understand that, as evidenced by his own reply to this very comment thread. And there's no climbing platforms in that game -- it's a maze game, meaning it's overhead-view and you can move in all four directions.

Jungle Hunt itself is just a reworking of Jungle King, which could've gotten Taito sued by the Johnny Weismuller estate due to his trademark Tarzan yell to start the game off. Still seems odd that he still saves a young girl at the end from cannibals, and kisses him and tells him she loves him after she is saved.

I got one of these from Amazon Japan, and also had an issue with the spinner. I noticed there was a rattle in the controller so I opened it up (six screws under the rubber feet) and sure enough a tiny white plastic washer was loose in there. I actually dismantled the entire spinner assembly as while it span and had resistance, it occasionally got stuck. I put the washer in the place I *think* it should go and it did improve it. Depending on how tight you screw the three screws that fix the assembly to the underside of the control panel, seems to affect the resistance of the spinner. Right now I’ve probably got it slightly too tight, so will need more adjustment. It’s definitely a bit of a faff, but it works.

The two things for me that push me away: 1) Games. I would realistically only want to play 10-15 games. A lot of them I'd play once for a little bit and then never again. 2) The price. For a mini console, it's REALLY expensive. Don't get me wrong, it looks really well built and that rotating screen is a nice thing to have, but when you're shelling out $200+ (not including any of the controllers or accessories), that's a hard pill to swallow , especially since I know I'd only play a handful of games included.

For those asking about the trackball/spinner in Mane, I’ve read it’s recognised as a mouse of some description. Think the trackball is the mouse, the spinner is the scroll wheel and the buttons are mapped to a really high button count (late 20’s/30) which isn’t recognised by Mame. You know, when all the mini consoles first started coming out, I was intrigued, but over time I've really soured on them. These ought to be compilation discs/carts on PS4/Switch/etc, and they could still offer special controllers. Most of these games, in fact, were released on compilations on PS2 and Xbox nearly 20 years ago. In the meantime, Taito is releasing a 10 game garbage compilation on Switch with only very early releases that all together don't come even close to a gigabyte at full retail. I'd spend $40 for a compilation disc with all of these, even though I own pretty much all of them in one form or another. I'd even pony up for the trackball/spinner controller. Good to see the spinner is recognised in MAME. Did the trackball work too and what version/computer was the spinner tested on? Interested in getting just the controller for MAME as it’s somewhat difficult to get either for the PC without building your own.
@DonnyKirkMusic2 жыл бұрын
I am cautious about even getting it for using with MAME, because a lot of games need their own configs of the accuracy of the spinner/trackball, and stuff like the Spintrak actually has documentation of its accuracy and what you need to set on MAME to get it working right, and this controller has none of that type of documentation. Same with trackballs, on the MAME wiki people show the settings that are best for each game and what trackball they tested with. Also, if you go the custom route do be aware that some spinners aren't accurate enough for certain games, so basically you only have two choices for spinners on the market right now (Spintrak and one other one I forget off the top of my head)

New Zealand Story is up there with Rainbow Islands as "games that absolutely went off when they came to European computers". We absolutely LOVED them over here. I always liked how cute the game was. There's some weird feature where if you lose your last life in a specific way, you don't get a Game Over. Instead you're taken to Heaven where you will either get a bad ending where the main character dies or you'll be able to find a hidden exit to take you back to the main game. This is the only arcade game I can think of that sort of gives you a free continue.

I was super curious to what the Lupin III game was going to be when the title showed up towards the beginning of the video, but unfortunately it's just a super early 80s game without much to do with the series... I really wish they'd make some sort of amazing stealth adventure game based on the franchise nowadays now that the technology is there to really make something like the show.

Still historcally interesting game to include as it was the first licensed game to be released and developed in Japan and also the second licensed game globally.

Apperenlty, Gun Frontier inspired Battle Garegga and actually this was Takatsuna Senba's third game after Dino Rex. Too bad this one doesn't have the light gun games like Space Gun, Operation Wolf and Operation Thunderbolt.

I wasn’t really interested in it until you showed the screen turn. That could be really cool. If the SD slot can be used to add other vertical shooters. 🤔 Loved all the jokes in this episode. Great video!

Recently bought a Darksoft Card for the Taito F3 motherboard. If you have the F3 and a cab or supergun, it's a great piece of tech. It has an SD slot and is like an Everdrive for the system. The F3 lineup is really robust and includes some of the best games in this vid like Elevator Action Returns.
