What are some titles you feel are better on a weaker system?

Arguably, Gradius 3 is much more fleshed out on SNES than on the arcade. Also, the SNES version of Chrono Trigger is much better than the PS1 version.
@marbles86413 ай бұрын
You gotta remember that in the PS1 version of Lunar, Working Designs cut xp and gold in half, and doubled the HP/Attack of all monsters... Because, of course they did. I played the Japanese Saturn release before the PS1, and was surprised how different the leveling was. I do LOVE the Sega CD version more because of how much WD screwed the PS1.

The Wii Ghostsbusters is more enjoyable than the PS360 versions. Star Wars Episode 3 is much better on the GBA than on the DS. Adventure Island 1 & 2 for the GB are more fair and control much better than the NES versions. Same for Milon's Secret Castle. The NES Ninja Gaiden 1, 2 & 3 are much better than the awful SNES "remakes" Punch Out for the NES is a million times better than the Arcade one. The first 2 Harry Potter games are better on the GBC than the consoles versions because the GBC ones are RPGs. The GBC and GBA Mario Golf and Mario Tennis are superior than the N64/GC versions purely because the portable versions have an RPG-like story mode. Lord of the Rings The Two Towers and Return of the King are both good on portables and consoles, but I think the GBA versions are the better games because they are Diablo/Baldur's Gate clones.

Great video. I have a suggestion for next time you do this: Rodea the Sky Soldier Wii >>> Rodea the Sky Soldier Wii U. (2015) Rodea the Sky Soldier Wii is a pretty fantastic Wii game, feeling like a much improved descendant of Nights into Dreams. It was finished way too late in the Wii's lifespan to release so they ported it to 3DS and then upressed the 3DS version for Wii U and the Wii U version was notoriously awful. When it came out the Wii U version included the Wii Version as a "bonus" but it was the actual main product. The poor game got destroyed in reviews because the reviewers were reviewing the terrible Wii U version and treated the Wii version like a bonus rather than the main product, which is what it really was. I'm one of the I think very very few proud owners of Rodea the Sky Soldier and still love it (Wii version) despite what everyone says about it.
@GameSack3 ай бұрын
I was wondering about that. I own it but only played the Wii U disc. I hated it. Now I know I need to check out the Wii disc.
@pattersong66373 ай бұрын
The Rodea the Sky Soldier story is wild and if you do put it in a video researching it for a bit will baffle you. Amazingly enough the Wii game even looks better visually because the Wii U game is the 3DS version upscaled to HD and has 3DS quality assets. The big difference is the controls. Rodea Wii is one of the better implementations of the Wiimote's motion controls and I'd argue the one of the absolute best non-first party Nintendo Wiimote uses. Flight feels incredibly natural. Wii U version loses all of that. Rodea's just cursed it didn't come out in the Wii's prime in like 2009 or 2010.

The fact that the only person in your party who didn't use magic was Kyle, who was one of the toughest fighters in the region. Really puts things into perspective.

@@jbailey690 The remakes were on the Saturn first. And both in graphics and sound, FAR superior to the Playstation. They were only in Japan though. While the Lunar 2 remake faired better since less was changed, it still lost some of the spirit of the Sega CD original, but almost made up for it with the better cutscenes. Lunar 1 though, yeah the Sega CD is far superior whether you're talking Saturn or Playstation. If you get a chance though, check out the Saturn versions of the remakes. Visual effects are MUCH better, it almost looks like a newer gen game compared to the Playstation. Music is WAY better too.
@jbailey6903 ай бұрын
@StormsparkPegasus I agree and co-sign all of this, I've played the Saturn versions which are definitely better and have the Saturn OST downloaded since some of it was better quality versions of the Sega CD Soundtracks. There's translated ROMs of the Saturn versions out there btw, definitely recommend them as the second best option after the SEGA CD OGs. Awesome to talk to an actual fellow Lunar fan btw. I agree with Eternal Blue Complete being closer to the superior SEGA CD originals than the disssapointing inferior Silver Star Complete on PSX but even with that said battle system, skill and magic spell visual and sound effects, overworld exploration, sprite work etc etc were all still far better on the SEGA CD version of Eternal Blue. There were a few other changes but the one I hated most was how they cut the Hiro and Lord Leo bonding moment, when they were alone and fought side by side to escape Althenas Cult trying to murder them both in the tower. Also hated how they got rid of that awesome magic experience level up system under Ruby's menu in the Sega CD Original. I did like all of the Working Designs goodies for the Remakes though but agreed as for the games themselves the Sega CD OGs were far better, it's not even close either.

The only things SMS Batman Returns did better over Game Gear was having a higher framerate and not "resetting" a boss fight for dying... only a Game Over can cause a reset (really lives counter is more like a HP counter lol). Fun fact: SMS Batman has a wrong warp glitch where if you damage boost yourself onto the bus and then land on top of it, by holding right to touch the edge of the screen you wrong warp to level 5. Speedruns use Route 2 for lv1 because the wrong warp takes Batman to level 5-4, the last platforming segment before the boss. Lastly, I still think GG Batman Returns and GG Shinobi games share the same engine. 1) Same framerate 2) Similar lifebar hud 3) Similar grapple swings 4) Separate screen for magic

With the thumbnail featuring a Sega CD and a PlayStation, Lunar The Silver Star came to mind straight away. I feel the same way for the same reasons - music, story changes, and being slower. And, random encounters just fit that adventure so much better, Eternal Blue also. It's a shame that the 32-bit remake ended up being the basis of many re-releases while the brilliant OG was left to be forgotten. A best of both worlds remake would be awesome. But it should have happened long ago, I think all the re-releases of the weaker game have killed all interest in the franchise. Kind of odd to see so much crossover with Sega Lord X's latest video!

I will forever stan for the NES Sunsoft Batman. It punches waaaay above its weight in terms of art direction, graphic fidelity (using so much black to mask the limited color palette) and most of all gameplay. It is an excellent feeling game to play. And despite having not heard the first stage music in over 20 years, I can recall it perfectly.

I agree about Virtua Racing having too much dithering in the MD version but I disagree about CRT blending. It depends on the game and resolution. Virtua racing uses a lower horizontal resolution which doesn't benefit as much from the CRT blending. Also it dithers the entire screen at once, so theres no miracle, but still works better than any current display anyway. But you can go play Kirby to see an excelent example. Transparency is pure 'dither' stripes and it is never visible on CRT, but it uses higher resolution in those elements
@TheJacklikesvideos3 ай бұрын
yeah the resolution and just overall obscenity of the graphics is the problem there. a lot of PS1 titles look great on CRT.

I'll also add a few. Doom on the Jaguar is better than the 3DO version, and the Sega Saturn version. Chrono Trigger on the SNES is better than the PS1 version (I think it was only released in Japan, and while it has some new stuff, it also has load times which make it the worse version). Ninja Gaiden Black on the Xbox original is generally regarded as better than Ninja Gaiden Sigma on the PS3. Sigma added some new stuff, but it also took away some stuff, and reduced the difficulty in a way that made the game generally less enjoyable. Debatably Mario 64 and Diddy Kong Racing. These games were ported/remastered on the Nintendo DS. The DS was more powerful than the N64 in some ways, so it technically counts. Maybe.
@BurritoKingdom3 ай бұрын
Chrono Trigger PS1 was released in the US as part of the Final Fantasy Chronicles. It truly makes no sense why any of the SNES ports have loading between battles and the over world. Especially for FF4 since that game fit on an 8Mb cart, which is half the size of the PS1's RAM. FF4 could have loaded up the whole game file and didn't need to load at all anymore just like Ridge Racer did. And for Chrono Trigger they could have loaded up when you time traveled rather than between the towns, over world and battles. TOSE did a terrible job with their ports
@TheJacklikesvideos3 ай бұрын
i wouldn't consider the Jaguar to be inferior hardware to the 3DO or Saturn. "64 bits YOU DO THE MATH!"
@3dmarth3 ай бұрын
@@BurritoKingdom The North American version of FF4 removed the load times, so it's a pretty good way to play. The only issue is that saving to the memory card is quite slow. There's an option to save to RAM instead, but then all it takes is for the electricity to cut out for a second... Even if Chrono Trigger and FF6 somehow couldn't be split up easily, I still wonder why loading was such an issue in those. The PlayStation can pull over 300 KB/s from the disc, which should be more than enough to grab all of the data it needs in just one second. (300 KB is more than the SNES's entire RAM.) I get that everything was packed tightly into the ROM, but since space was no longer an issue, you'd think they could just put a bunch of stripped-down bundles of data around the disc, e.g., one for 1000 AD music tracks only, one for 600 AD battle graphics only, that kind of thing. But I can only speculate and criticize from here! ;)
@max_e_maxxy_14 күн бұрын
9:20 Well, composite doesn't clean up dithering so much as CRTs do , a consumer grade CRT not a pvm. Maybe even RF...
@GameSack14 күн бұрын
Yeah, I used RF and a consumer CRT back in the day and dithering still bothered me.

About Lunar: Joe is absolutely right! Lunar:the Silver Star in the Sega CD is much better (feels better, extremely charming, much better music, super 90's Working Designs translation, there's even a "Ginsu Knive-set" joke). But the Playstation version is, as the title says, "complete". You actually get to meet every dragon with a complete dragon trial for every one of them, there's more items and the cons back bit, after Ghaleon defeats you, is much longer. You understand why the Goddess made the choice to incarnate and it fits better with the second game. The music, although different for some reason, had the same composer, so, you'll find odd, but they are not bad at all. Just avoid the Game Boy Advanced version.

I played Lunar on PS1 first then when I learned there was a Sega CD version that came out years before it I had to get it. I've played/own every version. Those two, the GBA version and the PSP version. I've played them all more than once and can say with certainty the Sega CD game is my favorite version. I like it better for all the reasons you gave. I even like little things like the character portraits I think are better. They come off as more charming, at least to me. And, lastly, I just love the opening theme song on Sega CD way more than the PS1 theme song. The PS1 theme is epic, and I love it, but the Sega CD theme gets me really pumped up to play it. It's the only RPG theme song of the 8-16 bit era I can think of that has a shredding guitar solo in it! That goes a long way for me. It comes down to preference, but that version just appeals to me more.

@@jbailey690 I don't know if I'd go that far as it introduced far more people to it and did well enough for Eternal Blue to be on the system unlike PSP. I mean it did get GBA and PSP remakes, so there was still interest. While we didn't get it over here there was Magic School Lunar for Sega Saturn. What killed it was Lunar: Dragon Song for DS. That one was an abomination against all things God and Man.
@jbailey6903 ай бұрын
@chaospoet it doesn't matter how far you would go, lol you are objectively wrong. Not getting Lunar 3 and getting the vastly interior, vastly underperforming PSX Remakes instead, especially with all of the goodies that came along with them instead of a quality game are what killed the franchise. Game Arts/Working Designs etc were all RIP'd over this awful decision/Remake situation, they didn't recoup nearly enough and HAD to keep remaking it because that's all there was a budget for. I've been there since the beginning of Lunar back in 1992, I would know.
