I use to work for Gamestop and a retailer makes an average of 5 -10 dollars off a game, Gamestop like mention in the video would pay an average of 50 dollars to the game company, they game company is not losing any money. Gamestop and other retailers are willing to take a hit on profit to get you in the store and buy used games, because it is a 100% return for them. That is Gamestops reasoning, Amazon and other retailers have their own reason for taking a hit on profits to sale a new game.

It's a very good marketing strategy. I worked at walmart years ago while in school, I was in a position where I could see the value of an item compared to what we were selling it for. The grocery area was not very profitable. It was a way to keep people in the "walmart ecosystem". People go for groceries (necessity) and then they also get the clothing or space heater they have been meaning to get. People are simple and they like simple processes. The apple/milk would be sold at a slight loss while the plastic toy made in china was made for 22 cents and sold for $8.99. So they would net huge profits by convenience alone. Then over time they would literally increase every price in the store by a small percentage which wouldn't hurt their bottom line because everyone in the local area already had to shop there since the other stores were put out of business.

Glad my special edition got moved from December 5th to release day, Amazon has been nothing but a fuck up lately Between Xenoblade 2, Odyssey and Wolfenstein II that’s looking like the rest of my year since I’m skipping Battlefront II because of the MP and it’s loot boxes.. A shame because I loved the beta Shadow of War (which I’m enjoying way more than I thought I would; last second purchase) and The Evil Within 2 are going to last me until the 27th, Super Mario Odyssey is going to have me glued back to my Switch again. Just like Zelda earlier in the year. I couldn’t stop.

Loot Box Mentality: It's ok if it has cosmetics only I guess. Problem: DLC was originally suppose to be 'addons to your favorite games' - now its a battle to get a 'complete' game. Also when they started it was free, or mostly timed-then free (Mech Assault, Halo 2, KoToR, etc) Problem: If something exist... it will eventually be bent. Taxes for example get introduced as "oh this is just a very small tax" - yes, but now there is a tax, and from that point it will only go up, but they never go away. Microtransactions, get outta my games :(

And as a separate comment in regards to Sams comments about how purchasing lootboxes can be a type of addiction and make people feel good I absolutely 100% agree and while I don't purchase in game content (like said lootboxes), I know I have addictions to other purchases. The amount of video games I've purchased this year, to some, would seem troubling. Whether it's going through a tough time or just bored there's something to spending tour money on something new and "flashy" to buy just so you can say you have it. For some people spending money is a type of stress reliever and makes people feel good when they get something new. Not saying all game developers are evil and saying we can make these people crave and give us hundred to thousands of dollars but if you give people the option it will always be there

One thing Daemon got right, the master system was a hit here in brazil.. i have very fond memories of it.. but then again mega drive and super nintendo are way high in my list. Just a fun fact about master system the company named Tectoy relaunched the console here in brasil on may 2016 with 131 games in the memory. They also relaunched atari 2600 with 101 games in the memory on march 2017 and the mega drive with support for cartridges and sd card plus 22 games in the memory on june 2017 Edit: Just forgot to say.. game scoop is great!

Shadow of War has a multiplayer component that can use orcs you purchase from loot boxes to kill the orcs of other players. So there are direct multiplayer gameplay benefits that can come from loot boxes.

{Correction} Game Scoop: As an avid Destiny player, I just wanted to clarify that although you can spend real world currency to buy loot engrams in Destiny, it is NOT pay to win. The engrams are solely cosmetics and there are NO weapons to give an advantage to players. Yes; Armor does drop, but because of the changes to armor from D1 to D2 there is no advantage preset on armor. Thus again making placing that remotely in the cosmetic column. Keep up the good work guys! Thanks!

Rockstar,Activision,Ubisoft,EA etc.. are all making shot tons of money thanks to digital games and digital in game purchases like DLC,season passes, micro transaction and now loot-boxes. Getting cosmetic items in overwatch, getting money to buy weapons and clothes in GTAV online, random loot in shadow of war, buying loot boxes in mass effect andromeda is common. I've never bought any micro transaction, but I've bought DLC, expansion packs and season passes and other random DLC for games like dead space 2 and 3, battle field 3 etc..

You do not get an advantage in Destiny 2 if you pay for bright engrams or what you refer to as loot boxes. Most of the items are cosmetic and the armor you buy is under leveled. Not to mention, just from playing the game players aquire many bright engrams and receive bright dust which you can use to buy items.

With multiplayer games, it just feels wrong to pay for an advantage. Would it feel fair if during a baseball game, the batter was able to pay for a corked bat and knock it out of the park? They might defend it and say "We need to pay for the park fees and we wouldn't be able to run the park otherwise" but it really undermines the competitive nature of the game.

Just letting you guys know. Destiny 2 isn't pay to win. There are no benefits outside of cosmetics and you can earn that stuff in game. Fireteam medallions are the closest thing to pay to win but even then you earn a ton of them without paying and they don't even impact the game at all besides giving you more exp to get a bright engram. Bright engrams are cosmetic only and thats what you would have bought with real money anyway.

It's my understanding bright engrams may include mods which boost your stats. I didn't say it's pay-to-win, I said you can pay for an advantage.

Game Scoop! I see what you mean but those mods are blues only not legendaries. The legendaries help boost your power level and are not in bright engrams. You have to go through the gunsmith by old fashion grinding. I hope im not coming off mean, I just wanted to inform people that it is not all true what people are saying. I can also speak from experience that you do not want to have mods on you while your leveling as they don't show properly on your power level. So in the beginning its best to avoid it. Last thing (I know this is long sorry), the mods give you no real advantage as well. Thats the complaint we have with bungie at the moment is that they literally do not benefit you almost at all. The Dude no, I didn't say I don't think its a problem. It will be a problem where they are heading. What im saying is right now there are no advantages right now you can pay for in Destiny 2. All of the mods in the engram will be tossed away for the legendaries. If anything, if you paid for it you got screwed cause it wouldn't do anything for you at the beginning, middle, or end of the game at all besides making you look cool. That's all I'm saying, just stating a fact and I didn't want people to get the wrong message. There is something wrong cause of the direction they are heading not cause the mods are giving you a advantage.

These can be purchased with in game money but the outcome of getting them is very low. Having played for 30 hours after renting the game I’m very happy I didn’t buy it the system does not work for me

Stat affecting paid random loot is disgusting, especially in a multiplayer setting. I work in a store that sells digital game codes and content, there is one customer who comes in to buy fifa points for ultimate team. To me alone he has paid at least £200, he is young teenager and i'm sure is going to get himself into financial problems at some point.

You cannot spend real world money to gain a gameplay advantage over other players in Destiny 2. You can spend real world money to gain cosmetic items in Destiny 2. The only things you can get with real world money that affect your gameplay experience AT ALL in Destiny 2 are the same rare (not even legendary) weapon and armor mods that are already cluttering up your inventory, and the Fireteam Medallions that give you a slight boost to earned XP and a slightly elevated chance of loot drops.

If you look up the definition of gambling in the dictionary loot boxes are 100%, super clearly, gambling by dictionary definition. Legal definitions are unfortunately convoluted and don't adhere to the dictionary which is unfortunate. The point about licensing is interesting. There are legal precedents that state that digital assets are real assets with value. Wouldn't that mean legally, regardless of what the game license says, that loot box assets are assets and thus proper, legal definition, gambling? #deepthoughts

Shadow of War deserves the backlash, controversy overblown or not. As it stands you can buy three versions of the same game, with content carved up and missing for players who pay less on day one. If you don't think they tweaked progression systems and drop rates for loot to facilitate loot box sales you're rather naive. That's gross regardless of whether or not you participate or ignore it all completely.

I believe there is a huge difference when it comes to loot boxes in shadow of War to Destiny 2 then finally Battlefront 2 (where I have to say Battlefront 2 because of the style of game it is comes out the far worse in my opinion in regards to loot boxes). Shadow of War is primarily a single player game so if you love the game and put hours into it you unlock everything on your own anyway. Destiny 2 is all bright engrams through silver which is the currency you buy with real money. All you get from bright engrams are sparrows, ships, emotes and blue armor mods. Literally no advantage to paying for them unless you actually want to show off an emote or shader etc. As for Battlefront 2 they are at the worst end due to the fact it's heavily multiplayer battles and you'll have people who want to put in $100 or whatever to unlock skills and guns which puts them at a more competitive advantage. While you still have to have skill a higher level gun or certain character skills has a chance to offset an actual players skill. And for that reason and for the fact I've grown out of multiplayer battle games (like cod) I won't be purchasing Battlefront 2 cause I know the single player campaign won't be meaty enough to justify $80 (Canadian price for a regular game) unlike assassins creed or shadow of War which are huge single player games with hours of content.

On the loot box controversy. Despite what a lot of people seem to believe. Loot boxes are NOT GAMBLING. I agree with the ESRB in that manner. It doesn't meet the the definition requirements to be legally classified as gambling. BUUUUUUT, it still takes advantage of all the sleazy underhanded addicted aspects of gambling to exploit gamers and un-ethically take money from them. Just because this isn't technically qualified as gambling does not make it right or acceptable. Loot boxes are wrong and the gaming community needs to take a stand against them or they are going to permanently taint the landscape of AAA games going forward. And don't give me that BS about gaming companies needing to make more money to make up for higher game costs. Gaming producers using this exploitative crap in their games (EA & WB I'm looking at you!) are making record profits. Ubisoft which does not use this tactic as much in their big games is also making record profits. Successful games are making more money than ever and their biggest releases this year haven't even been that good in my opinion! Make your games successful to make money, not exploitative! Loot boxes suck even if they are not paid. It's just a really annoying mechanic. Every game has to add in bland complicated systems that you have to learn. Uncharted is really refreshing to play again as you don't have to deal with an annoying tacked on progression system
