It's been a while since I played this game, but from what I know, it's the equivalent of Sonic catching you. If you have additional lives, the scene at 1:44 plays, but if you lose your final life to Sonic catching you or going through smoke without shield, you get the scene at 2:09.

That's in the extra losing cutscenes video. And I didn't put it in Knuckles video because that scene is not caused by Knuckles dying in game. Edit: I worded this comment wrong. That cutscene does not play SHORTLY after Knuckles dies in game. You have to pass Eggman's stages to achieve this scene.
