@Sargotha - Not quite. The reason for Castlevania III, Rad Racer II, After Burner for the NES and Virtua Racing not working on the RetroN3 is due to missing connections between the NOAC/GOAC and the cartridge slot. The RetroN3 did get a revised NOAC which fixes the compatibility issues with Castlevania III and Rad Racer II, but After Burner is still not 100% compatible(plays with severe graphical errors) and since the Genesis side is unchanged, Virtua Racing still doesn't work.

I had a FC Twin. It was designed to play NES and SNES games. Only fault I had with it was the cardinal directions wouldn't work on the controllers that came with it. And according to wikipedia, you could buy an attachment so you could use the NES light gun.

@MazeleyFanClub - The 4th setting just turns on the Super NES side. Sega Master System compatibility isn't advertised on the RetroN3, but it does work with Master System games using a Power Base Converter on the Genesis side. I believe the reason they have a 4-position switch is because they couldn't get a proper 3-position switch to fit inside the system.

The Retron 3 has some sprite issues in SNES games sometimes. In Contra 3, for instance, the level 2 boss has inverse colors on its legs and is drawn under the cracks and white lines on the road.

I actually bought myself a Retron3 recently so I could play my Sega Genesis games without having to rely on one of the Model 2 system that I've bought at a yard sale for about five years. Totally worth it, if you ask me, because even though the sound is slightly tweaked for certain games, it's a lot better than playing the games on one of those ATGames systems (which I regret buying a year ago), and it comes pretty close to playing the original.

I have an FC3 Plus which also has the O/J switch as well. I noticed that some of my games, especially Quackshot Starring Donald Duck act differently when switched to J. If you play Quackshot while the switch is on J, all the games text and the title screen is in Japanese. However, I can run most other Genesis games in my library while the switch is on J, and only a small number of them give a region lockout message.

I got the FC twin. It's a pretty good system, but the controller are wired poorly meaning they pop of the soldering points if you roll the cable against the controller. I love the quality of your video; the lighting is not too hard, you can see everything clear, the sound is well EQ'd as well, lots of good information. Great video overall.

@Gamester81 Just so you are aware the Retron 3 and the Retron Twin does not play every NES game some I have found Ninja Gaiden 2 and 3, CaslteVania III, and several others. I know its not the cartridge because it works fine on my working original NES system.

I actually bought myself a Retron3 back in 2012 so that I could play my Sega Genesis games without having to rely on one of the Model 2 system that I've bought at a yard sale over ten years ago. Totally worth it, if you ask me, because even though the sound is slightly tweaked for certain games, it's a lot better than playing the games on one of those ATGames systems (which I regret buying a year ago), and it comes pretty close to playing the original.

Thank you for your honest review. There's a shop in Seattle that carries systems kind of like this and I think it would be kind of cool to get one but if I ever do I will be saved the disappointment of knowing that they are not as good as the original systems.

The switch on the back is a region-select switch for the Genesis. I have the Genesis 6-Pak cart, and if I turn it on and then flip the switch to J, when I load up Streets Of Rage, the intro displays Japanese text, and then the Bare Knuckle title screen eventually shows up. Plus, the Super Game Boy works perfectly with it. I have the "Tri-System" version which works super Super Mario RPG as well as CastleVania III. Be sure to get the "Tri System" version for better game compatibility.

to me, the only upside to getting these would be to save on power supplies and AV ports. Instead of needing to get a multi av switch box just for 3 systems, and needing a power strip aswell. 55 bucks plus the need to get the systems respective controllers will just jack up the cost, and it really would be cheaper to get the systems separately. If you browse ebay i see no reason you can find them separately for 20 or less each. and lastly, nice video john. always love your show.

Well, on the original SNES, there are two plastic notches that fit in between two spaces in any game cartridge that came out in north america which any japanese game lacked, hence the regional lock out. If you're crafty enough, you can take those pieces of plastic out of your SNES, and then any famicom cartridge will fit all the way in.

I got one of these on a lark, the Twin, but mine is called the C2 console. Shaped oddly like a Dreamcast miniature, less like a Playstation what I thought at first. Right, it's very light and I am thinking a battery pack could power this thing, maybe 12 AA's with some circuitry to drop it down to 10VDC or NiCd's in the same way but rechargable. I never trust the power supplies that come with these things. Great show! Late on this reply, been a while since you posted it, just got this one.

@grayfox147111 жыл бұрын
There's still something great about having the actual games and playing them on an old television set. Even if it's not on the original console. While my fiancee and I are renovating our house, it's cool to have the Retron 3 to play NES, SNES, and Genesis games. Don't have to have all three systems plugged in. It's a pretty flimsy piece of plastic though... cheap. Emulators are cool if you can't afford or find the originals. Helps for rare games you'd never get to play.

@Gamester81 The O/J Switch on the system is a Region Swtich But it's only for Sega Genesis games because my Gen-X got the same swtich and if you have Streets of Rage 2 and wate till the push start screen pop up then filp the swtich i will show you the Streets of Rage 2 Screen will change if you do it to Sonic 1 or any other genesis game you'll get the Region screen saying that the game is made for North America Systems

@TOMATOEE99 I think PAL version games can not play on a Retron 3. I am not to familiar with the PAL format but I think that the connectors are different so it will not work even with a different ac adapter. I could be wrong so you should ask around.

Inside the case would have compact versions of authentic hardware all linked up to a switch system and there's one av out. The systems I would like to see is TG-16 , SNES, and Genesis. The switch on the back of the Retron3 actually is a PAL/NTSC switch. I accidentally switched it and it wouldn't play some genesis games.
@Gam3sXtr3m314 жыл бұрын
Our PAL TV's can only handle the NTSC Signal if it comes through a RGB cable. If it's only a composite video cable, there is the only chance on a LCD or Plasma TV, not a CRT. That's the problem a huge of this clone systems have in the PAL terretories.
@SpitzNamen59712 жыл бұрын
Compatibility issues with NES games could arise from the fact that the NES featured a lockout chip that was required for playing certain games that came out near the end of its life. I'm assuming that these two clones do not have that lockout chip inside of them.
