Gamestop is awful? No! At least not for me! The employees at my local gamestop are always courteous and helpful and they never are rude or pressuring me into buying the newest games or trading in thngs. Walmart on the other hand does have bad customer service, their employees take 20 minutes to open the glass cases the games are kept in and often I'm helped by some grumpy 50 yr old fat slob.

This is why monopolies are bad. GameStop bought out all the competition so that only they were left, and now that their greed and piss-poor business practices have finally caught up with them their closing is going to leave a massive retail hole for used physical games. Good riddance! Hopefully physical game stores can start over on a better foot after they're gone. Who knows exactly how much media GS has destroyed though!

@@blueinternet4336 Very true, but there is an insane amount of surplus stuck in GameStop's warehouses. Granted you can buy anything online, and Ma&Pa's are great, but unfortunately most gaming shops don't stick around unless they're a gaming "general store" with cards and tabletop stuff too. Even then despite being a good store they could close in relation to perhaps setting up in a bad area. I'd support them any day over corporate if they're actually decent. There's one where I live (and I worked there even) that's terrible, and almost as bad as GameStop pushing their "rewards" card.

It's not a monopoly for several reasons, but the number one being a monopoly by definition refers to an industry supplier that the government has agreed to punish their competitors in some way; for example, in many cities everyone is forced to pay some minimum charge to one water company, and in some cases it's even punished to collect rainwater. Since it's completely legal without any upcharge or tax to sell the merchandise through other sources, then they are not a monopoly. They may be the only game store in a certain region, but that's usually due to the fact that it's unprofitable to compete with them, because they're already losing money, so they simply have a monopoly on failure.
@theobscurestash6537
@theobscurestash6537 4 жыл бұрын
@@litigioussociety4249 I suppose they don't have control over that trade "exclusively", but they have bought out every other major video game-centric retail chain and their surplus, and now control an extremely disproportionate amount of commercial second hand video game trade. You're right that it's not a monopoly exactly, but it's damn close.
@litigioussociety4249
@litigioussociety4249 4 жыл бұрын
@@theobscurestash6537 But that's ultimately due to copyright and trademark laws from the government. Without that anyone could legally produce and distribute new copies of the games. This is why people don't care about physical media anymore.

Could've gone harder on used games, especially *old* used games. People who grew up with stuff like the PS2 and GameCube are at the ages now where they want to replay those games, and that generation of gaming is still pretty under-represented as far as re-releases go. GameStop already has initiatives for selling used games since they make a lot of their money on used games, so why not push harder on reselling retro games?

The retro game market already has a lot of competition, so Gamestops current reputation wouldn’t be able to sufficiently compete with it. An example being, I used to work at Gamestop in a mall and right across the hall was a retro/antique games and records store. Sold everything all the way back to N64, and maybe even more that predated it, but I don’t remember.
@softpiglet

@@007blond if they had stuck with retro games instead of dropping it like a hot potato years and years ago, then maybe they'd have some footing. As it is now, their reputation is so bad among retro gamers and especially collectors that their attempt to bring retro games back in the last year has barely made a dent. Retro gamers remember.
@007blond
@007blond 4 жыл бұрын
OfficialSkyPiglet they might’ve had some footing, but honestly I doubt it still would’ve affected much even if they did maintain a foothold in the retro market. Gamestops reputation concerning their modern day business practices would probably be too much for them to be able to keep up with newer businesses that aren’t (yet) known for shady business practices. Besides, with the rise of online shopping (Amazon, Ebay, etc) and the ability to download games on virtually any console, it’s inevitable that Gamestop is going to go out of business. It’s honestly kind of a shame though, Gamestop was my favorite store when I was a kid lol

They’ve become so bloated that it impairs the customers ability to choose quality games. If they’d follow store trends and understood what their customer base really wants, it’s not random accessories and you, it’s games! Imagine if you will, a GameStop where you walk in and are greeted, as you walk along there are shelves with new games, then best sellers and then retro. Lastly some items like apparel and custom kits or something. Keeping it simple would be the answer. Instead, it’s just a generic store with no focus on the customer. It should be a game store, not a Dollar General.

A lot of stores begin to peddle knick-knacks like this when their core business is struggling. The notion is that the junk will draw in more foot traffic and potentially more paying customers. But it’s a trap because the profit these toys yield is minimal in comparison to the store’s core product; often they sell them at a loss. On top of that, the sight of all this junk tends to be off-putting to the core customers. Sales drop, but instead of focusing on the core business, the company *widens* the assortment of tchotchkes at their stores, to the detriment of their core product, thereby setting off a vicious cycle. Anybody who visited a Borders, Tower Records, The Wherehouse, etc. in their late years will know what I mean. (Amoeba Music in Hollywood is going through a similar spiral at the moment.) As for Game Stop potentially going out of business, I can’t say that I feel bad for them. They put a lot of small (and often vastly superior) game shops out of business. You live by the sword, you die by the sword. Another great video. Thanks!

Néstor Castiglione while you make some good points, you’re completely incorrect regarding margins on GameStop’s toys or knick knacks vs their core business. The margin on these items are incredibly high, compared to the margin on video games and consoles, which is incredibly thin. You can view this for yourself in their company filings if you don’t believe me.

@echorrhea
@echorrhea 4 жыл бұрын
NPC #1248402984 It could very well be true. My own experience first-hand with selling this sort of material has demonstrated otherwise to me. I used to work at Amoeba Music in Hollywood. Sales started sagging circa 2012 or so, when they began introducing all manner of extramusical merchandise. Over the years, the toys became a big draw. It was a Catch-22 situation, however. The hardcore customers would complain to us about how they felt more and more space was being accorded to the toys. Many reduced the frequency of their visits to the store; a few stopped coming altogether. On top of that, the margin on the toys was exceedingly thin, if not a loss. It could very well be that Game Stop, as a chain store, has negotiated a better deal on the toys than an independent record store-however famous or large-could manage on its own. But whatever their profit margins on those toys, they evidently have not helped the parent company out of its current troubles.

I brought the console in with all the originals (twist-tied accessories, documentation, and box.) The salesman tossed the box and documentation and put the rest in their cardboard box. Asking him why, he said it was company policy otherwise customers will insist on one with the original box. GameStop doesn't cater to collectors. Their core userbase is average people that treat games like a disposable commodity. They play it, then want to get rid of it for something new. And they don't throw away as many DS cases as you think because most are traded in without cases to begin with because, again, that's how their core uverbase treats their games. And before you say anything, yes, they do throw out cases near the end of a console's life, but most handheld games just don't come in with cases in the first place.

Yeah, I dislike GameStop and the few times I've been their I've refused to buy anything but new just to shove a fork in their business model. Don't care if used if $5 for $25 I'm buying new as I will not support the used business model. They really seem to get tilted by that as well just looking at you .. I would rather give the publisher the money (even tho they have gotten worse themselves) than reward GameStop for giving someone $12 for a new game and selling it to the next person in line for $55.

GameStop is one of those companies that has been trying REALLY hard for a long time to tank their own stock. I have to wonder if they actually aimed to destroy the company rather than grow it. I won't attribute it to malice though, since we can clearly attribute it to stupidity. I will feel really bad though for the good employees that work there. I won't feel bad for the store manager near me. Buy anything that isn't the latest AAA title and you'll get treated with disrespect.

The thing with so many stores is that they grow too much and stretch themselves too thin making their prices have to go up to pay for all that over head. If they can bring themselves to a stable amount of stores, malls and busy areas only, they can probably survive for a bit longer. I used to be a Store Manager at Gamestop and I dont think I've really bought much there since I quit in 2012.

I saw a video that had a different take on why GameStop is struggling. The federal govt raised the salary requirements for overtime exemption. So most GameStop managers were now eligible for overtime, and almost every manager had to work 50+ hours to complete their work. GameStop sent out a survey to see if managers preferred having their salary raised to meet the minimum exempt requirement, or switch to hourly and be limited to 40 hours. 98% responded for a salary raise. GameStop hosted a convention for upper management to go over the change. The execs told everyone that they decided to switch everyone to hourly. However, as everyone needed OT to finish their work, everyone would receive a 20% paycut so they will earn the same amount after factoring in required OT. 1/3 of the managers walked out then and there, with another 1/3 handing in their two week notice. GameStop never recovered from the lack of experienced managers.

The console I had been using not twelve hours before, I was told "won't start", so I wouldn't be getting the full price they were offering. I said, "Okay, sure, whatever." got a few used games, and haven't been there since. That was 2020. The two in my town are limping along, but the used game/gaming stores are doing more business. Even 10 years ago GameStop was terrible, they pushed you hard for every possible upsell, and the stores always seemed to be filled with young teenagers without credit cards buying games with change and small bills. Not to mention gutting games; this has always irked me and with the crappy exchange rate console games are near 100 dollars in Canada now, there's no way in hell I'll buy an open product for that price. I suspect the Canadian operations will follow the normal branch-plant-economy model where they get liquidated overnight to provide enough cash to keep the mothership going for a couple more quarters. Toronto has lots of great indie game stores, and since consoles are region free now a lot of them carry Japan and Hong Kong imports which Gamestop will never be able to do. At this point even Best Buy is better if you want to get a physical game without waiting.

I have to agree with you that GameStop has been terrible for all this time and I do not see why people are wanting to go to there stores when you can download these things off the internet right from the stores of the gaming system you have. As for the old games that people played when they were young. Some of the big names like Nintendo and Sony allow you to download these old games right to your game system. I rather download and play the game right away instead of getting in to my car driving to the store getting the game having to get back in the car drive home and than get the game out and put it in system. By the time I would get down with that I could have the game downloaded and be playing it. So I think downloading games is the way things are going to go from now on.

Gamestop is just poorly ran by people believing that they can always maximize....always. "Cut as many corners and hope the people don't notice" type of things. Gamers for the longest time have been smart enough to know when they get screwed, and I'm not talking just about Gamestop's markup. Personally, two things killed buying anything from them unless absolutely necessary: 1. Deus Ex: Human Revolution was a game I was going to buy there until I heard about what they did opening up the boxes. (For those that don't remember, Gamestop opened up copies of Deus Ex: Human Revolution to remove the free copy of the same game through OnLive's service. Their excuse at the time was they were going to come out with a competitor.....and that plain never happened) 2. The mantra they use when selling new games... me: hey do you have a new copy of X (game released about a month ago) GS: did you preorder? me: no, but even if I had....do you have one? GS: no Also the latest time I went to a gamestop, which was about a year ago, I went into a store looking for the Wipeout Totaku figurines because it's only at gamestop. A salesman was walking around and asked the usual "do you want to be helped?" and I said no just looking. He then proceeded to do a 30sec story about their current sales, which is fine. He then was asking for my gamer card, and I said "nah man, I'm just looking". He then typed something on the tablet he was carrying and was trying to hand it to me asking me to just put in my info. I stared at the tablet then him, and said "DUDE, just back off", and then another family came in and he proceeded to goto them like lightning. I told my wife we are leaving. They need to go under, NOT because the industry will die, there are plenty of demand for gaming stores out there, like you mentioned with mom 'n' pop shops. It's just time their reign of bad management, shady practices to both customers and their own employees, and sub-par branding just came to an end.

My local gamestop now looks like a damn Spencer's gifts. But apparently there is a huge amount of people who buy those damn Pop figures. I had no clue until I went to the So Cal Retro Gaming Expo and a big chunk of the line was just people picking up rare pops figures it was the weirdest thing to see. As much as I would like to see GS shutdown I hope at least this scares the shit out of them and maybe tone it down on all the shady practices and policies to get back to the golden ages of EB games and Funcoland but I feel like they would never do that anymore and are just going to run that business into the ground. But even when I try to go to pick up games that seem like Niche titles my gamestop never seems to have them so I ether get them digitally or take a longer drive to a mom and pop gamestore to get actual copies of said games. The only thing I like about gamestop is that it's the close by but that is all they got going for me.

One of my fondest memories was my mom taking me into Babbages in a mall & telling me to go pick out a game. This was back in the 90's when cover art was really all you had to go off other than magazines. I remember picking my one of my favorite RPGs ever, Megaman Legends for the PS1. I vividly recall the shelf jutting out of the wall diagonally & seeing the game maybe slightly above eye level. I had just started getting into RPGs and had loved playing Megaman X4 at my cousins house on his PS1. Megman+RPG=LOVE

I have shopped at the Prescott Gateway location (to this day) since its grand opening day. About 19 years now. I had not heard the name "Game Stop" until that visit, expecting to see an EB. Wow thank you. Their anti-thief system for new releases was a strain. You were lucky if you wanted a new releases factory sealed. It just didn't go well with me if it was supposed to be for a gift for someone. Generally I rarely purchased games there for current systems, with the exception of used DVD films. Usually I would peripheral and consoles. Walking out with a fresh PS2/PS4 in those big blue boxes were my best memories.

When I moved to the Seattle area, I remember stopping by since I had never heard of it before. Gamecrazy didn't impress me one bit, but Hollywood Video was awsome. The one in Everett, Wa was probably the best video rental store I ever went too. Of course, they folded before the inferior Blockbuster Video did. At least the Redbox's also seem to be disappearing also. I think streaming videos is actually much easier. I'll admit that the one thing I miss about physical videos was when you just fast forwarded past the government warning, previews, ads, etc on VHS or early model DVDs.

In my city as the 3 GameStops have begun falling in sales, smaller mom and pop shops have begun to re-open. These mom and pop shops are really near, plus they have those set ups where you can pay to play. Not sure that legality but I dont see the problem it usually just make the people that play there actually buy the games

It's time for Game Stop to go. They had a good run. I've been saying for 3 years that they will not survive past this decade (2010s), but looks like they will actually survive and be relevant a little past the year 2020. No need for them to exist especially if you have brick and mortor stores like Target, Best Buy, and Wal-Mart that are still around. I'd rather have Toys'R'Us than Game Stop! Game Stop have been ruthlessly been ripping their customers for years especially regarding trade-ins and then reselling those trade-ins for 5-10 times. And then during their golden years when they had a monopoly in the gaming industry, do you all have any clue how much money they were making? Tens and hundreds of millions. They had their time to shine, now it's time for them to move over and move on to bankruptcy. Also, check out the KZbin videos of the BS that their online shops send their customers. Refurbished BS, resurfaced game discs, no manuals/no cases for used games, and tons of mistakes in their listings and tons of errors with shipments. I have barely ever shoped at Game Stop, but every time I've been there and have, these young millenial guys are absolute jerks that think that they are superior to retro gamers like myself and totally omniscient of all gaming subjects. No humility and no humbleness, just rude and terrible customer service skills. Quality control is extremely tough when you have 4400+ stores, so it makes sense that they will eventually have to shut down a ton of stores, if not all soon. Ludicrous how much money they were making at one point. They fully got too ahead of themselves and spread themselves too thin. I don't care one bit because they forced hundreds of mom and pop game stores to close down in the United States! Go down Game Stop, I'll be happy to see you go. Shop at Play-Asia.com y'all!
