That the problem between critic and consumer, over time the critic has spent so long in these worlds that they notice and are annoyed by things the usual consumer wouldn't care about. So what the critic enjoys is what the consumer doesn't have the time to appreciate. I get the want to experience all the cool shit everyone else is talking about, but so much so that you rush to the end of one game to start the process again? Doesn't that just feel shitty. Do you drop games often? If they're no longer fun have you ever given up? Taken a break from a world to try a shorter one?

Videogames are arguably the most time consuming medium there is. Most movies are about 2 hours long. In comparison, if a game is 10 hours long, it's considered short. Most modern AAA singleplayer games can last from 30 - 60 hours on average. That's not even taking into consideration multiplayer games, which you can technically play forever. You just have to accept the fact that you're not going to play every game you're interested in. Slash the alright / mediocre games out of your backlog, and stick with the best or the ones you're most interested in. Don't try to rush the games you do play, enjoy the experience, but pick them carefully.

Its like you buy that Chinese console with all the roms in the world and you want it all. You can't have it all, you have to stick to one, then another, then another. I play between 8PM till 10-11PM everyday, one game, then I finish that game, get into obsessive lore on phone during "free" time, like riding bus, in bathroom etc, and get into another game. Hell I watched entire One Piece in that 8-10/11PM. You can't have it all, nobody can.

The question is not even about not having the time but why chasing this goal of consumption. There are great , deeply touching games but the vast majority is just entertainment. I , as game dev, don’t understand this chase and obsession over many games. There are games that change you, there are games that entertain you but at this rate of consumption, most are going to be just a shallow entertainment that took your time when you were supposed to improving yourself, learning, building relationships, working and all that was lost over a mindless pursuit of entertainment that had no impact on your life besides a distraction for a few hours that took you valuable time of things that are more meaningful and important.

I have come to learn that you just won't have time to experience every single game you are interested in. What you should do is to pick out the best of the best, the games that you think will be most impactful and fun for you personally. The industry is so vast and expansive now a days that you can afford to be picky with games and choose whatever game scratches your spesific niche. Once you have chosen the game make sure to give that game time, let it simmer. The more time you put into the game the more it will give back. Games such as Baldur's Gate 3, The Witcher 3, Bloodborne and so on, took a while for me to truly appreciate, but once I had gotten far enough into them there was no going back. Delayed gratification, those types of games are the ones that will stay with you, they take effort and a long time to beat. Just like a really good book or TV Show, it is so worth it in the end. Consuming too much game news, reviews, podcasts etc. can also be detrimental to your enjoyment. Always looking ahead to the newest thing will let your mind wander off and not truly appreciate what's right in front of you. If you don't give the game your undivided attention, you are robbing yourself of that great gaming experience you had so much of as a kid.

A game I got recently that is perfect for people in this situation is Destroy All Humans 2: Reprobed. I played yesterday for 4 hours before work and felt like I had seen everything the game could have to offer because they throw so much cool stuff at you, but you can easily see that theres still a lot more to do. 5 different small open worlds all based in different countries, and I have only seen 1 but it still gave me more as the player than so many games have been lately. It truly is a game that values your time and experience as a player. Note: If you want to get into it, I find the second easiest difficulty a fun way to get a power trip while still being able to die, but dying does not really net any loss so I feel like this is the best gameplay experience you can get.

I've found it's best to pick and choose the games I'm most interested in playing so I can just take my time in playing them. Sure I miss out on some games, but I don't have the time to play every game, nobody does, and rushing doesn't change that fact. You gotta enjoy the games you do play, otherwise what's the point in playing any games? Another thing that's helpful to me is to just not play open world games. Personally they're just too much filler and not usually a worthwhile experience compared to games that have better pacing, or do one thing well. Instead of a game where it's a mediocre racing game, shooter and flying sim. Why not just play games that focus in those genres and do them better? I still like open worlds from time to time, but I can only play like one of those games every few years and it has to be a really worthwhile one.

Don't you wish you could just freeze time at any moment and get all the gaming you want out of your system? Unfortunately, that's not a thing (though it should be!). The best we can do is enjoy the few hours we get each day (or sometimes week) enjoying the games that we love or discovering new ones. I know you want to play ALL THE GAMES. So do I! But even with all the free time in the world, that's not possible. There are so many games out there, and even more in development. So I encourage you to take your time in these game worlds, and enjoy them to the fullest. We can't play all the games, but we can at least make positive memories of the ones we do end up playing. :) Lately I've been playing the first Final Fantasy for the NES. I've played it once or twice years ago, but never got too far. I'm determined to beat it this time!

I watched this video where the advice to enjoy games is to take your time with them, and never play brute force yourself through a game that loses your interest after a while. Just because you buy the game, doesn’t mean you need to finish it. And just because a new game comes out, doesn't mean you need to rush through whatever you're playing now. TLDR: just have fun; games ain’t dead-end jobs, lol

I know what you mean. I haven't outgrown video games or anything like it, but caught myself trying to beat them faster just to cross things off my list and move to another game to then cross it off the list... and that's just not the pace that works for me. If I have to play a single game for over two years before I can say I'm properly done with it and satisfied, meaning that I skip on other games, then be it. I noticed the same pattern with books and thankfully stopped myself before the same mistake. Let's enjoy stuff properly. It's not a competition to see beats most games.

When I was old enough to build my own computer, I thought emulation would get me all I ever wanted. I think it depends on what game it is for me. This year I’ve played Persona 3 and RDR2 actually taking my time to slow down and do side content and I ended up 100% both. There may be a play session where all I did was side stuff and talk to people and that’s okay! But then there’s also times where I’ve just rushed through something to get the platinum or see the credits and then be done with it. Not every game is equal and you shouldn’t feel compelled to just play the new product. I’ve been going back in time with the games I’ve been playing because new things don’t interest me. But saying that I’m really looking forward to Shadow Generations and will play it day one. I know I have an issue with time because of a challenge I did in 2015 to watch a movie a day because someone thought I couldn’t but since then I’ve never been the same. Probably my own fault and I’m trying to unlearn that. As a kid I used to play the same stuff over and over again and the only game that does that for me now is MGSV. However, I also had infinitely more time back then than I do now so I just want to experience more in the shorter time I’ve got. I think others are the same. I have games from when I was a kid that I dropped more than I do now because I play 1 at a time. I still think I like video games, I just play less.

@@dAWwr906 yeah I have a total of 408 games across all platforms and have completed 117. The majority of my collection came from looking at sales consistently and then using the money I made from my part time job in high school to buy them. As a broke college student I don’t buy too many games these days, but I still frequently track sale prices in case a really good one comes my way. I think it just started because as I had gotten older I found so many mature game series I had missed out on growing up, and had money for the first time in my life. Having OCD I usually play games in order and rarely skip ahead in a series so that might be why I have such an abundance of them now. Every game I own I genuinely do intend to play, and I have an invested interest in each of them, there’s just a lot of good games I guess

Ill say something that may annoy you. Im a game developer, I released a game, i gave my life for studying until id start weeping of being tired in pursuit of not creating game but being better at art. Ive been since then in this search of beauty, of doing something artistic that is bigger than i am and even tho im working in the industry and i devoted my life to make what people consume, I don’t get why many have this obsession and see gaming , not creating games, as this profound endeavor when you are just experiencing entertainment and art. Many games have a profound impact in out lives, with stories and settings that truly touch us in a different way but those are very, very rare games and although consuming them is a uniquely touching experience, why being obsessed on the consumption without a way to turn it into something meaningful. Spending all day gaming, exploring everything that a game offers , for what end ? You barely change compared to true search of meaning and self improvement through real experiences, education, work, building relationships. Why the need to explore something that will be just entertainment sometimes? Why wasting your time going over dozens of games that will be a note on your mind, having only the value of entertainment when truly amazing experiences are so rare and fulfilling when you actually have them ? Sincerely, as someone who would describe myself with aspects of being an artist, I don’t get it, I didn’t become a professional and made my life goal to be an artist because i played all day. I played one or two games that had a deep impact on me and after learning how they were done, the game itself became meaningless cause id only see people’s effort on very specific fields bringing true dedication that became a final product. I got inspired by the people doing and their deeply love for creating, not for a final product that reflected their job. I know artists, i know directors, developers, i read and have a love for them sharing, not a game, people.

Everything becoming open world with lots of fluffy content (meaningless collectibles) has created a lot of fomo. When games were shorter fomo wasn’t bad. You have to commit a month or two to a game now to play it. Oddly enough I put the most time gaming in the last couple years into re4r because I could beat a whole run of the game in a busy weekend

If it helps. It seems like we play a lot of different games but it's just an illusion. We always do the same things with different textures. Maybe the only different game is Zelda breath of the wild because of how you can solve the puzzles differently. For the rest it's the same game for 30 years lol so if you want to stop for a month you can be aware that you are not missing anything new

I want more semi-open world and linear games. Open world games are mostly just filled with copy and pasted boring shit.

Bee lining through open world games is the best way to play though. Sidequests are typically only there to pad out the game time so if you value your time, why bother?
