I work with most ES (Fire, EMS, police, CD and relay to municipal and social services if needed). All i can say is that there are all kind of people on all sides, cops tend to be the most jaded and burned out type at least in the area i work, i hate the lack of compromise and effort of an important part of them but on the other side i know first hand that it's not easy bypassing the corruption or enduring the hardships of the job without any kind of support (psych leave or support is a stain on your file and could avoid you from acquiring a higher rank). I've also known EMS guys that don't give a fuck about people and might leave a dead body on the streets because their shift ends in 10 minutes, although you see it a bit less of those kinds of people in medical. All in all, the thing that made me happy is the way that these guys are able to coordinate so well and their willingness to help, as a dispatcher i wished that all the people that work in ES would have that kind of disposition towards their vocation (and a big part of them have it still).

It's really interesting how much this resembles being a paramedic. You sit around, waiting for something to happen (watching shows, talking with colleagues), until you get an alarm from dispatch, get in your car, drive to the sometimes vague location (could be also a code red with someone dying) to help. And a lot of people who do that are also volunteers.

Off the top of my head I know of at least one other example. There are also anti-ganking efforts in Eve, with people interfering with ganking efforts to protect victims.

I remember hearing about something that happened in WoW where a kind of virus, which was only meant for a high level late game area, escaped that area due to a bug and thousands of low level players were constantly dying because they didn‘t have enough HP to survive. Ro counteract this, some noble souls started going around as healers searching these low level infected people and just constantly healed them until the „virus“ was gone. It wasn‘t of course as organized and long lasting as the fuel rats but i think it shill shows that some communities just want everyone to have a nice time playing the game.

This just happened to me today. I started playing the vanilla version a couple of weeks ago, trying to do as much as I could by myself. I quickly realized that exploration was going to be my big first passion, that’s what I was looking for in this game from the start anyway. Just yesterday I could afford my first asp explorer. Very quickly the realization of the huge distances that were possible to traverse in such haste in this ship took me way too much by surprise. I set out to explore the entire Pleiades (worth about 3million in cartographics). After I finished exploring my fuel tank was still more than half full. I said what the hell, and set off instantly to the dark Taurus region. I never bothered to check if there were populated areas close by. There weren’t any. I realized this with terror when I had almost no fuel. I didn’t have a fuel scoop mind you (I know, I’m an idiot). I checked the web in panic and saw a 5 year old post about having to self destruct. I was heartbroken. My new ship and all the information about one of my favorite areas would be lost. Then I saw the fuel rats page, and contacted them. It was one of the most surreal experiences calling people I didn’t know from my phone to inside my game. Two rats came, their attitude and patience was amazing. I had never had a conversation with an actual person in-game. The fuel they were carrying wasn’t enough though so one left and the other one literally escorted me to the nearest populated system, charging more fuel for me on the way. He gave me a lot of advise and it was such a beautiful moment. He told me to never doubt contacting them when in danger, to not give up on exploration because of the incident, to get a fuel scoop and we chatted a bit about different ships. Then I asked what I could repay them with, and he told me they do it out of pleasure. My heart, much like the Grinch’s, quadrupled in size. When I was safe and cozy inside a hangar, he bid me farewell and good luck. My head was still racing, I thought I was going to lose everything because I had no more money, and now here I was, safe with my ship and all my info. I’ll never forget this. Never would’ve imagined that such selfless people would exist. Long Live the Rats. This game is so awesome.

Not long after I started the game, I convinced a friend to join as well. She ran out of fuel on the edge of the bubble. So, I grabbed a limpet controller, and headed out her way. Got to her, popped 2 limpets of fuel to her, and on the third limpet, I got a mauve adder, and crashed out of the game. When I got back, my FULL 32 ton fuel tank, was empty, and I still had that 3rd limpet. The fuel rats came and rescued the rescuer. I've been a fan of them since.

That is a sensational video sir - the best Fuel Rat documentary I've ever seen and quite probably one of the best Elite: Dangerous documentaries full stop. As one of the very early "old school" Fuel Rats who's met Surly Badger on a number of occasions (but alas is now severely lapsed in his Fuel Rat duties) I just wanted to salute you sir! I love that whole new generations of Fuel Rats have come and gone over the years and that you're still being inspired to create things like this. Long live the Fuel Rats! o7 P.S. As a cmdr who has had to call for fuel rat help 3 times i loved this video an insight into all the workings of the rats, i would have more than likely gave up playing on the 1st occation on my 1st trip to sag a. 1 more rescue i had was a bit further than sag a at a later date i made a massive mistake looking for non sequence and blackhole systems, as a ps4 player i understand we have maybe less rats on our servers. i waited 6 hours on a very kind rat to travel almost from the bubble out to me but embaressingly i was flying under the influence and when he was less than 25 jumps away i fell asleep :( i woke up 8 hours later in a panic i tried to make call for another rat when i tried to log new case i was amazsed that my case was said to be still open and within 5mins my rat responded and said iv been waiting for you :) these cmdrs are on a diffrent league and bring something very beautiful to the game. hat off and o7 to every fuel rat out in the black i have a great respect for you all. in my view you are the heart of the ed community

Speaking as one of those who tried to learn Elite years ago and basically dropped out for the overwhelmedness of it all, these kinds of emergent gameplay stories are absolutely captivating - thanks for this window into the experience!
@PowerofRock244 жыл бұрын
That's a shame. Seems to be a common trend of new players getting overwhelmed, which is understandable. It's a big galaxy. What was it that was overwhelming specifically? I had the same experience when I first tried Elite too. It was the combat tutorial that had me thinking that. But really, that tutorial is just WAY too unbalanced for a player that is new to flight sims. I eventually just skipped it and jumped into the game not knowing what I was doing. Now it's my all-time favorite game :) I think you should give the game another try. Don't worry if you're no good at it. We all started from the same place. Just do what YOU want to do. Even if it's just flying around in your starter ship exploring the same star system you spawned in, then just gradually introduce yourself to more things. Best thing to do is probably just focus on flying, taking off, and landing, then jumping between star systems, then introduce yourself to the mission board incrementally.

I've had the pleasure of being rescued by the Fuel Rats in the past. This is a great documentary that faithfully portraits how it went when they had fuel, and I didn't. It really is that simple, and there lies all its beauty and glory.

Once I was mining and not looking at my fuel, I flew around and all of the sudden my engines went off. I was first confused, until I noticed, that I'm out of fuel. I had already some mining stuff loaded. I called the fuel rats and two guys helped me, but also pirates came and scanned me. That was funny, the fuel rats had no weapons, and I had no fuel, they had to refill me and then I could defend my self with two laser beams xD

Yeah, any time a player drops into a mining zone it summons pirates. Their arrival probably triggered it. I wonder if they consider that in the SOP.

I was rescured by them once, a code red. I overestimated how far I could go and got stranded just 5Mm from the station where I wanted to fuel up. Luckily I read up on the proper procedures just beforehand and logged out even before calling for help. They managed to get to me with about 4 seconds to go. That was quite scary, but I'm very happy to have been rescued and that people like the fuel rats exist.

I had to call upon them recently. The galaxy map sent me down a path with zero fuel stars and I didn't notice until it was too late. They told me that I could tell the map only to vector me through systems with fuel stars and offered to show me - I was in a rush to catch up with friends for AX hunting, so I resolved to look it up later, but was gushing in my gratitude to them. They were an invaluable source of help, but for them it was just Tuesday. This video went a long way to helping me understand why.

Great documentary :) highly accurate on how we do things and why. its always about doing the best we can, and that's led us to the Standard Operating Procedure. It can seem like its very rule based, and strict but its because the SOP is genuinely, in almost all cases, the best way to do things. And when it's not... we change it so that it is :) Thanks for making this!
@DFPercush4 жыл бұрын
Much respect, I've never needed your services but it's reassuring to know you're there. :) About that SOP, I saw another comment from someone who needed rescuing from a mining zone, and the rat didn't have weapons. Any time you drop into a mining zone it's going to summon pirates that will scan your client. That might need to be considered. Just a thought. Have a nice day and good luck!
